Jeremy Poling 7 November 2010

I'm interested in any records of a Remus Poling, born around 1823, resident of Barbour County as indicated in the 1850 and 1860 Census, moved to Ohio and resident there as indicated in the 1870, 1880, and 1900 census.  He married Nancy Weaver circa 1846.  Remus was listed as the father of Martin W. Poling (1851-1942) on Martin's marriage license to Mary Ann (Unger) Poling, daughter of Peter Unger.  Martin W. Poling is my great-great-grandfather. has a number of family trees listing a Martin B. Poling as father of Remus Poling but none have sources to verify this fact.

In Barbour County there used to be a coal mining town name of Berryburg. My grandparents and their children lived there for awhile. This was back in 1902 they went back and forth for awhile, my mother was born there in Berryburg, March 1910. In trying to find some info on a death I was told by an uncle long ago that the courthouse in Berryburg burned and all records lost. Did Berryburg actually have a courthouse or was it reported in Philippi perhaps? I can't find anything online and I sent away for the book that listed deaths in that timeline. Can you help me out on anything at all regarding this town?
Thank you so much

I am searching for information on a MACK McDONALD

I have a 'missing' Mack McDonald in my tree, and I am hoping to connect the two. There are many similarities between them, I just need to find 'the smoking gun' ;)

Mack McDonald, born 1874-1875 Brown County, Indiana

There are several census records that place a similar Mack McDonald in West Viriginia's Randolph County in 1920, and Barbour County in 1930. There is also a WWI Draft Registration that places him in Ellamore, Randolph County. The Census information says he is a 'millright', many of the Indiana conections are also millrights.

Using the SSDI I found a Mack McDonald born in Indiana, SSI Registration state was West Virigina, but he died in Washington DB in 1966 (that baffles me).

Would appreciate any light you can shed on this information. Particularly interested in an Obituary, or other records that may help me connect the two.

Marsha Humphreys 2 July 2010

I am seeking the death record of my great-grandfather, Samuel Benjamin Shomo. He was born in 1866 in or near Barbour County, and he died sometime in the 1920's, most likely in Barbour County. He was in the 1920 census, and his wife is listed alone in the 1930 census, so he must have died sometime between the two. She died in 1931 and is buried in, I believe, Elliott Cemetery in Belington. THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE. Marsha Humphreys

John Jaspar Sandy, my grandfather, was killed in a coal mining accident, when either a mine roof fell in or somehow a load of coal was toppled onto him, in Brownton, WV on March 13,1928. I found his death certificate on line, but the writing was hard to decipher. I am looking for any newspaper accounts of the incident. Checked with local paper and library to no avail. Attention Ann Sligar and Karla Lowman
I recently became knowledgable re: inquiries and message boards and stumbled across yours on Barbour County.  My father's people are long-time West Virginians and I have made several trips to Barbour County over the past decade, the last being in 2008.  I found 2 people in your 2008 queries list on the web site that I have information for but I don't see where there is a way to contact them.  Maybe I'm just missing something on the site?  I would like to contact Ann Sligar and Karla Lowman.  Could you let me know how to go about this?  Maybe this is kept at your place?  Thanks for your patience with me.  I have actually been doing genealogy for over 35 years but only learned computers within the last 10 - it's phenomenal!  Sincerely, Diana (Shaffer) Bargmann,

Thomas Phillips 18 February 2010

Looking for info about SEVIER families in Barbour Cty. My wife's Gr Gr GM was named Elizabeth. On two death certificates of her children her maiden name was listed as Elizabeth Sevier. She was born in the early 1840s. She and her two children were listed as SULLIVAN when she moved to FL. The 1850 census lists a James Sevier from Barbour Cty and one of his children was Elizabeth, aged 6 in the census. This name does not show up in the 1860 census. We've hit a brick wall. Any help would be appreciated greatly.

Jack Coffee 27 January 2010

I'm trying to locate a cemetery in Pecks Run, Upshur Co. I'm assuming that it's a small place and probably only one or two cemeteries there. Do you know the name of any cemetery in that area?

I have one person said to be buried at Peck's Run, Olive Fitzgerald, born ?, died Aug. 2, 1898). Actually, her husband Benjamin (c1838 - ?) might also be buried there. I'm just looking for confirmation that they are there and dates if a headstone is present.

Thanks - Jack
