It's been several years since I hit this brick wall on this family, so I thought I would try again. In 1850 census of Barbour County appears Benjamin and Jeminia PHILLIPS, 26, with 3 sons, Robert (3), William (2), Alpheus (1). He and she are born in Virginia, which could be WVa also in 1850.

There are 32 other PHILLIPS families in Barbour at the same time. Several are old enough to be his parents: Absalom (51), Abraham (49), Benjamin (44), Eli (56), George (48), Isaac (46), Jesse (62), John (54), Joseph (51), (2) Thomas (67), (50), William (74)

Can anyone help me connect Benjamin to any of these families or another ? Can anyone find a marriage for Benjamin and Jeminia ? Guessing around 1845-1847. Would appreciate any help.

I am a descendant of Orla WARE and Orda JONES (my great-grandparents) who were life-long residences of Phillipi, WV. Any information about this family line would be helpful. Quincy Dadisman Wed September 24 2003

Does anyone have any information about Erasmus Smith DADISMAN, born in Taylor County 1856, but lived until about 1888 in Barbour County. He left after an altercation in which he was threatened with arrest. Reportedly went West. Reportedly died in Colorado in 1940. He left a girlfriend behind and may have written to her. Perhaps asked her to join him. He was brother to Jefferson Davis DADISMAN (1860-1942) (my grandfather) who reputedly knew where he went. Perhaps someone knows of a female relative who left about that time to go West.

SIMON - Simon Cemetery

Hi, I was wondering if you might be able to help me with a genealogy question? I have been researching the SIMON family from Barbour county for about 5 years now. I was given directions to a Simon Cemetery about 3 years ago. Wondered if you might know anything about it? I am told it is on the Indian Fork to Peeltree Road south out of Philippi. I am making a trip to WV in a few weeks and plan on looking it up. I was told a man named Charles Simon has a key to get into the cemetery.

I have been trying to find out what happened to my g g grandfather Jacob Ashenfelter who lived in Philippi on the current site of the IGA store. Jacob, his wife Elizabeth Ann and their oldest son, Thomas J. Ashenfelter seemed to disappear around 1867-68.

I have heard that there is a list of Barbour County cemeteries and also a list of the headstone readings. I wanted to know if someone could tell me where I could see the lists to try to find Jacob and the others. I am hoping that the lists will help me close out my records.

I am researching my ancestors and I am having a problem locating the interment of my great grandfather. His name was John Clay MAXSON (MAXIN, MAXEN), b. 6-24-1866 at Upshur Co. I know his wife Julia (GIBSON) MAXSON, who passed away in 1916, is buried at Pleasant Grove Cemetery near Philippi, as well as her son Frank MAXSON. I am having a problem finding any kind of records for that cemetery other than the partial listing, and she would not be listed anyway for she has no tombstone. We know that she is Thanks for reading my letter and any reply would be appreciated. Jewell Fustini

Note: Jewell, I found this in the reading of the Pleasant Grove Cemetery, p.502, Echoes of Glory by Gary Wayne Evans: "9. Jula Maxin, born 1865 died 1896. 10. Frank Maxson, January 1, 1889 - June 9, 1916." MCLew.

My great grandfather was Adam SAGER Jr. and he shows in the 1850 Barbour County census as Adam SAYGER (sp) District 5 page 47a in the household of E. Paul CLEM. Adam works as a farmer.

In the 1860 census he shows on page 150 as Adam age 41 with a wife Mary C. 23 and 2 children.

Adam was originally from Shenandoah Co.

I have contacted the Co. Clerk of Barbour but they were of no help.

My problem is my Great grandmother "Mary C." She was probably born around 1837/38 in Barbour Co. (I think from other records) I can find no record of her marriage to Adam Jr. Probably in the 1855-57 range due to her age and the fact they had a 2 yr. old in the 1860 census. I CANNOT LOCATE HER MAIDEN NAME.

All I can do is ask for any help you might be able to give me to solve this question or any ideas on where else I can go. I have been on this for 2 years. Sincerely, Don

Still seeking info on the SIMPSON family of Barbour and Preston Cos of present day WV. William Luther SIMPSON b1829 m Sarah Jane REED b1837 about 1852 (can't find that marriage).

Then, William and Sarah's son Samuel Henry SIMPSON b1875 m Julia A. TOWNSEND in 1895 in Barbour Co, WV.

There was a John SIMPSON who married Keziah Moore and died in Barbour Co in 1850. He would be a candidate for the father of William SIMPSON b1829. This John SIMPSON's father appears to have been a John SIMPSON who married a Catherine Mathews in 1812 and Sarah Barrett in 1827, both in Monongalia Co, now WV. They lived in Preston Co, WV.

This John SIMPSON Sr. seems to have been a cousin to a Henry SIMPSON of Preston Co. They are said to have been from Ireland.

thanks for any clues...Lyle Corder

Larry Thompson Wed July 2 2003

Verified information needed about David THOMPSON's ancestry. Documents show James, John, and Jacob as the father from Pendleton County. It has become clearer that John was his father, but clear source documentation is in dispute. It is unclear whether father came to Barbour County with his son David. If so, we are searching to discover where he is buried.

David THOMPSON is buried in the Jerusalem Cemetary with wife, Mary A. (WYATT) THOMPSON. The date of migration is unknown but must be after 1804 (probably in the 1820's) since David's birth was in Orange County, Virginia. David's mother was Millie RAINES. The family spent some time in Pendleton County where records of the family are few.

Note: I found a burial for David Thompson in vol 1 of the Barbour County Cemetery Headstone Readings, could this be the one you seek? Jerusalem Cemetery: Thompson, David born: 15 Nov 1804 died: 14 Aug 1887. MCLew.

In response to an Inquiry -- by Steven L. Cockrell Wed May 23 2001:
I'm looking for the marriage date of Andrew SLUSS, b. 1805, and Sarah F. CARTER, b. 1824. They raised a family and died in Barbour Co. and I hope they were married there as well. I appreciate any help you can give me. Thank you, Steve Cockrell ( ) End of Inquiry

I have Sarah SLUSS in my family records as marrying Benjamin ROW in 1867. Also, my grandmother said that Sarah had two children, Noah & Andrew. In the 1850 Barbour County Census, Sarah was married to Andrew SLUSS and they had four children, ages 8 to 1 (Noah). This raises a question: What happened to her husband Andrew and possibly three of the oldest children? Was lil' Andrew born after the 1850 Census?

To review my records concerning Benjamin Row and Sarah Frances Sluss, go to:

Feel free to email me directly.

Jackie Paugh Sun April 20 2003

I am looking for information on J.B. Paugh, his parents and siblings. I have conflicting information on the year he was born. The family records indicate July 1844. He married Elizabeth V. BRIDGET (I believe this is BRIGHT) in Lewis County 2 Oct 1873 and his age was stated as 24. This would be a birth year of abt 1849. His marriage license indicates he was born in Barbour County.

According to family record his full name is John Bethel PAUGH (I have not seen this in any records.)

According to the 1850 Census index for Barbour County there are abt 5 PAUGH families and the 1860 abt 4. I would probably be interested in seeing all of these families and finding the location(s) or districts where they lived in Barbour County.

I thank you in advance for your time and efforts. I really appreciate your assistance. Jackie Paugh
