WATKINS
I have "lost 400 acres" and hoped you might be able to turn me in the right
direction.
Family stories state that our DERRY line came out of Loudoun County, VA and settled around the Philippi, WV area around 1812, before moving up into Fayette Co., PA.
The only clue I have is from a will dated 1808 from Balser DERRY. In it he bequeathes 100 acres each (of his 400 acres) to his two sons, Philip and Jacob DERRY, and his two sons-in-law, Benjamin WATKINS and Adam MUSCHLER (Mashler/Mitchell). From that point on -- the 400 acres seems to disappear.
Balser DERRY purchased the 400 acres on 30 April 1796 from William McCLEERY and Isabella, his wife. They were of Monongalia County, VA and this is where the deed is recorded in Old Series DBk. A pg. 203-204. The 400 acres was listed as being in Harrison County, VA. "along a branch of Simpson Creek". I have been told that this is now Barbour County, WV. Also, there is another possibility that the land was also certified in Randolph Co., WV -- but that has not been confirmed.

CALLAHAN - RUCKMAN - STEUART - STEWART
I have been working hard to find anything on my gggrandfather, John
RUCKMAN, Sr. He was supposedly born about 1832 in Rockingham County, VA.
He eventually married Margaret Sarah CALLAHAN (or CALLIHAN) and they
settled in the village of Racoon Run in Harrison County, near Clarksburg,
WV. Margaret was born about 1836. When John was around 22 years old, he
is listed in the 1850 Census of Barbour County as living with a family
named STEAURT (perhaps spelled Stewart now?). At that time the STEAURT
family consisted of John STEUART (age 38), Alcy Ann (29), Felix (14), Hugh
(12), Margaret (7), Mary (80), John RUCKMAN (22), and Sarah Ann STEUART (11).
I sure hope someone might have a clue about all this. I seem to have run into a wall on this. The RUCKMAN homeplace where John and Margaret lived was right on the Harrison/Barbour County line. I do not have any information on Margaret CALLAHAN either. Maybe I can find some information on her also.

I am asking anyone out there in the genealogy world to help me with a problem
and an ongoing debate.
My gr gr grandmother, Cordelia DUCKWORTH, was born in MD March 22, 1833. She married Marshall MITCHELL, son of Hezekiah and Margaret MITCHELL around 1850 in Barbour Co.
I have seen her name linked to Henry and Abigail DUCKWORTH, as well as William and Mary Jane DUCKWORTH. In the 1850 census (Barbour) she is in the home of Henry and Abigail DUCKWORTH, but I have always been told Henry was her grandfather, and William and Mary Jane were her parents.
Circumstantial evidence seems to confirm William as the son of Henry [clarify: William b. 1804, the husband of Mary Jane...there are alot of Williams floating around out there].
Question #1: Who was the father of Cordelia DUCKWORTH MITCHELL (include source or why you think that, please).
Question #2: Who was the father of William DUCKWORTH, b. 1804, husband to Mary Jane McMIC or McGIC, dau of James?

William, Walter, PORTER. William was born about 1904, Walter 1905, and an Aunt Bertha

All their children were born in Barbour Co. I know of 10 children: one of which Ranson Newton BENNETT (my great grandfather) born May 9, 1849 and died Feb 1, 1902 in Tucker co.
He married on Nov 10, 1892 to Ida Bell Simpson CREAK (born May 12, 1865 Died - July 11, 1934). Ranson adopted my grandfather Claude Vernon CREAK when they married. Claude born 12-24-1884 in Preston Co married on May 10, 1912 in Kingwood marriage book 14 page 425, to Della Flo MOLISEE born April 21, 1897 in Preston Co. Their first 7 children were born in Barbour: Owen Vern, Clara Virginia, Henry Herbert, William Murdo ( my father), Howard Dean, Laura Ida Mae, Columbus Junior, and Helen Emogene who was born in Randolph Co. I have an ancestor: Daniel RICHMON, b. 1822 in Nestorville.
What VA county was Nestorville in at that time?
He had a brother Jesse I. or L., who in later life called himself RIGHMAN, b. ca. 1824???
There's a marriage record floating around that a Jesse RIGHMAN married an Anna Maria STEMPLE whose family was from Aurora, WV. Is that near Nestorville at all? Jesse was definitely living in Nestorville during the Civil War, so he hadn't moved out of the area.
Finally, the AIS W. Va. 1870 census index has a RICHMAN, Jesse L. age 46, in Cove twp., Barbour County. Is Cove twp. anywhere near Nestorville?
Finally, I just read the Nestor obituary and noted the EUB church in Nestorville. Can anyone give the full name of this denomination?

Researching the Henry Harrison COMBS family who also had children who lived
in Barbour County. Any information would be helpful. Henry Harrison COMBS was
from the Hardy County COMBS family. Henry was born July 5, 1844 in Hardy County.
He was married four times; first to Rhoda WOLFE, second to Wilmiah THOMAS, third to Margaret Virginia GORDEN and lastly to Roanna FAST.
My husband's grandmother was Minnie L COMBS SHAY, born to Henry Harrison COMBS and Rhoda WOLFE. Henry died in Taylor County and is buried in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Eby Road, Taylor Co. WV
Philip COMBS, a son to Henry and Rhoda COMBS I believed once lived in Philippi, WV. Philip COMBS was born October 31, 1872 in Preston County and married Elizabeth (Unknown). They had three children. Mary Alberta COMBS, Avie Charles COMBS, and Elwood Benton COMBS.
Incidentally, my second reason for making a query was that I had read a Barbour County query from Janice Jones made on April 29, 1999 requesting information about Philip Combs. The address she gave to respond to (janniepooh@yahoo.com) does not work. I would like to respond to her too.

YATES, born in 1862 in Barbour Co. Her father was John D. YATES and her

My grandmother married Francis SPITZER who was from MI sometime after 1883, place unknown. They had their first child in NB in 1889. By 1897 they had moved to CO where they remained.

My GGrandfather, George SKIDMORE married Senia Virginia SIGLEY on April
24, 1889, in Preston County, WV. The marriage record shows he was 26
and Senia was 23. He was born in Barbour County, WV and she in Preston
County. George died by accidental death in Fellowsville, WV in August,
1908. His exact day of death was not known.
In the Barbour County 1880Census, I found Margaret SKIDMORE age 58, with several children
including: Jacob, 37 Wilkey, 23 Saul, 21 George, 17 (Possibly my
GGrandfather) May, 18 and Anna, 15. Considering the age on the marriage
record, the George could be my GGrandfather. Anyone having information
to share, please do so. Also, I found some old photos and added them to
my web page. You can find them under the menu as Ancestors Page 1, 2,
and Ancestors Page 3. There is one interesting one that shows what appears
to be a choir. If anyone can recognize the people in that photo, please
let me know. My family also resided in Tucker County and the picture
could have been taken in that area.

My Grandmother Lucretia Ellen (MARTENEY) BURNER must have been the youngest of
Anthony and Sarah's children. They had six all together. I know Anthony had a brother
Abe and Uncle Gerald also mentioned a brother Hart and a brother Jeff and an

William married (1) Catherine WEAVER, daughter of Henry WEAVER and Abigail
GRIGGS 11 Nov 1815. Catherine apparently died prior to 1846 for at that
time Uriah WEAVER (Catherine's brother) is purchasing land from the
estate of their father. Catherine is not mentioned, but it appears that
her interest in the land is being purchased from her (Catherine's) heirs
(see Barbour Co. Deeds, Vol. 2, pg. 70).
William appears with a wife Ann in the 1850 Gilmer Co. Census and wife Elizabeth in 1860
Calhoun Co. Census. Other variations of her name are also to be found. Any help

possibly in Shenandoah Co. Their children were:
Family members reportedly moved through WV by way of Harrison, Barbour,
Upshur, Lewis, Ritchie, Doddridge and Gilmer Counties.
Francis J.FRYMIRE appears in the 1850 Barbour Co. Census without husband
John Sr. but with John Jr., Amanda and Ara Ann.
Son, William, appears in same census in his own household with wife,
Eliza CRITES and dau. Mary Jane.
Harrison FRYMIER m. Barbara PECK 31 Dec 1857 in Barbour Co. and appears with
her in the 1860 Harrison Co. Census; but reportedly not in the 1850 Harrison
Co. or Barbour Co. Census.
William FRYMIER eventually moved on to Gilmer Co.
John FRYMIER Jr. m. Margaret Elizabeth or Elizabeth Margaret MOODY c.
1852. Their children were:
John Frymier Jr., wife, and family appear in 1870 in Lewis Co. Census
and in 1880 Ritchie Co. Census. Can anybody provide more information

Mary Jane (on tombstone& bd as 9/26/1941) but a Louisa Jane, b. Barbour Co.(18y5m16d on
12/23/1855) married in Gilmer Co., a Francis Gainer whose age, name & tombstone matches
Mary Jane's husband. No firm fit.
Possible other sibs of Edgar William were Albert & Polly.

1850 census records show:
I know for certain that this Joshua is my G-G-Grandfather and suspected
Abraham could be his father. I found this listing in an index of census
records. Does this mean they lived next to one another and if so where in
Barbour County would this be?
I then received from a fellow researcher a copy of Abraham's will written in
1887 that lists his wife, Also, and his children, Lair D., Joshua, Sarah Jane
and Evaline. I can only assume that Melvina was deceased. The will was
presented by Lair D. Reed to the courts June 8, 1891. Joshua has died in 1889
between the writing of Abraham's will and it's presentation. Is anyone

In 1799 Michael ALT had a daughter Elizabeth ALT who had a son
Michael BUZZARD. Michael ALT bought property then and in the deed his
grandson is mentioned, Michael BUZZARD, as an heir of his. I have been
researching this for a friend. The property is between Moorefield and Fisher,
he bought it from a David WELTON and it is close to Lick Run. I found the
name in the Pendleton County records but not in Hardy so far but Michael Buzzard did live
in Hardy as a child, I don't know if they relocated. The names in the deed are HUTTON,
BAKER,
ALT, BUZZARD. This land is west of the Northbranch. We're just trying to see where the family
went from Hardy County so he can do a complete family tree. Michael Alt would be his oldest
relative if he can find records on them and find out who Elizabeth ALT
married and if she was married to a man with the last name BUZZARD or if this was a
grandchild by another one of Michael ALT's children -- if he had any others . This

Looking for information on the father of Thomas Fretwell PHILLIPS, b. 12
April 1745, d. 8 August 1810 in Randolph Co, W.Va. He married Susanna Nancy
KITTLE abt. 1765. After extensive research I do not believe he was the son of
Jonathan, Jr., descendant of Christopher PHILLIPS. None of the dates match,
or can I find facts to support this. There is a possibility his father's name
was Aaron PHILLIPS, b. 10 October 1702, who was married to Elizabeth READ.
They had six children, one of which was a Thomas Fretwell PHILLIPS, b. 12
April 1745 in Crab Neck, York, Virginia. There were also 5 other children. I
do not have their names at this time. Research continues. Would appreciate

grandfather is Burton Wilburt STEERMAN, son of Edward STEERMAN & Mollie Florence
WARE. My grandmother is Mabel Rosalea BRADY, daughter of Rachel Ellen MOORE &

Mertie HUME was the second wife of my great-grandfather,
Sylvanus ZINN. She married him in Barbour County after
1910. He died in 1939. My mother, Vivian ZINN, says that
Mertie was killed on Thanksgiving Eve, and was run over by a

I am interested in finding information about the parents of my great-great-grandfather, Edgar
William BLACK b.3/17/1835, Barbour Co., d.3/2/1909 (73yr/11mo/15d) in Gilmer Co.
Supposedly they were John & Mary BLACK. Edgar was listed in the 1850 Barbour Co. census
as living with a HOWDERSHELT family. By 1860 he was in Gilmer Co. He'd married
Margaret Ellen NICHOLS, 2/10/1859.

William ROSS in my ggggrandfather, I have been told that he helped to built
the Phillipi Covered Bridge and was a member of the home guard that guarded
the bridge. Is there a list of men who built and defended the bridge after
