Many families of Barbour (and it's preceding counties) remained for only a short period and
moved on to seek the wonderful land they heard of in the west. Many of these left little evidence
of their presence except in the form of descendants of daughters or occasionally of a son who
married and remained locally.
I have long sought the identity of Israel Coffman's wife Hester (Elsy?) Townsend (Tonsman).
William McClaskey (McClusky), Sr.'s wife has been known as Rebecca Howell, the marriage
having been confirmed in Shenandoah county, VA records. One authority gives John Ryan (who
gave his birth place and early residence as Hampshire county, VA) with wife Sarah Talbot (this
John Ryan is not the one who is reported as married to Sarah Crouch and left Randolph county
before 1790).
Also notice the surname Hand in the Howell family. This surname has been given by some for a
wife of an early Randolph county resident. Several early Randolph families had connections to
New Jersey so this may be relevant in that search.
The accompanying reconstructed material gives clues to possible relatives of Hester, Rebecca, and
perhaps, a sister for William McClaskey. Please do not assume that this proves any of those
possible relationships. The information is given simply to suggest research pointers to locations
where relevant data might be found to extend our knowledge of these lost (or almost lost) families
of Barbour county.

names of the contributors; please search these names at LDS web site for that information). My
appologies if you are lead to any wrong conclusions from this data.

more likely to be the father of the Solomon Townsend b. c. 1794 in Bath Co.,
