Obituary: Mrs. Emma J. Moats
July 8, 1939
Funeral services were held at 2:00 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, at the Tacy M. E. South
church, eight miles east of Philippi, for Mrs. Emma J. RYAN MOATS, 80, who died
last Saturday night at the home of a son, Melvin MOATS, of Elkins, where she had
been visiting for the past two weeks. [another story lists the cause of death as a
heart attack.] She had made her home with a daughter, Mrs. Rosetta PHILLIPS, of
Belington. The Rev. Lantz ANDERSON was in charge of the services and interment was
made in the Tacy church cemetery. Mrs. MOATS was born near Tacy on June 25, 1859,
and was a daughter of Michael E. and Mahala POLING RYAN. She was married to Riley
MOATS, [another article gives the date of marriage as February 28, 1878] who
preceded her in death. Mrs. MOATS is survived by three children: Melvin, of
Elkins; Lillie BALL of Grafton, and Mrs. Rosetta PHILLIPS, of Belington. She is
also survived by a brother, Henry RYAN, and a sister, Mrs. E.H. WINCE, both of
this city [Philippi].
