About Brooke County WV


Brooke County was created in 1797 from part of Ohio County, VA(WV) and named in honor of Robert Brooke,
Governor of Virginia from 1794-1796.

The county is located in the northern panhandle and is 92.50 square miles in area. There are five municipalities:
Beech Bottom, Bethany, Follansbee, Weirton, and Wellsburg. Weirton is situated where part of the city is also in
Hancock County, WV
.

A monument two miles east of Wellsburg marks the spot where stood the first Grimes Golden apple tree.

The first Episcopal church (St. John's Church) west of the Allegheny Mountains in what is now West Virginia
was erected on Follansbee-Eldersville Road in this county 1793.
