Isaac Sturm was born in Barbour County, (West) Virginia, on March 17, 1859. He married Amanda Johnson, daughter of Peter and Mary Holsberry Johnson, on October 26, 1877. The wedding took place at the home of the bride's parents in Barbour County and was performed by Hamilton Poling. Amanda was born May 23, 1849, in Barbour County. She was the great-grand- daughter of Robert Johnson, a veteran of the American Revolutionary War.

Isaac, the son of James W. and Susan Christena Stemple Sturm, had moved to Calhoun County as a small child at the beginning of the War Between the States when his father enlisted in the Confederate States Army. After his marriage to Amanda, Isaac took her back to Calhoun County where they lived near his parents. Their first child, Albert Hansford Sturm, was born in Calhoun County on August 3, 1879. Isaac and Amanda moved back to Barbour County about 1880, where their second child, Tracy Anderson Sturm (author's grandfather) was born on June 14, 1881.

Isaac Sturm was a farmer, owning land on Leading Creek, near Montrose, Randolph County, West Virginia. Amanda died of dropsy on March 19, 1912.Isaac survived Amanda by 23 1/2 years and was married three more times before his death on September 13, 1935. His other wives were Sallie Williams, April 17, 1913; Martha Long, December 18, 1924; and Almeda Amie, who outlived Isaac, June 12, 1932.

Isaac and Amanda are buried side by side in the cemetery behind the Primitive Baptist Church at Montrose. Buried nearby is an infant grandson, Hubert I. Sturm, second child of Tracy and Almarine"Allie" Phillips Sturm.
