GRIFFIN

I am trying to find information on an early 20th century religious publisher named D. W. GRIFFIN. In 1907 he published one of the first pentecostal periodicals. It was titled A Call to Faith. He published it in Martinsburg at first, but at some point between then and 1910, GRIFFIN moved his operation to Wardensville in Hardy County. No copies of A Call to Faith have survived in any archive that I can find, but I have recently found several of GRIFFIN's articles reprinted in an Atlanta paper called The Bridegrooms Messenger in 1910-1911. GRIFFIN also published religious tracts/booklets in Wardensville. One of these has survived in an archive in Missouri. Due to a debilitating illness, GRIFFIN ceased publications in December 1910. He died on 1/19/11. I have not been able to find an obituary.

I am trying to find any information on D. W. GRIFFIN. Of course, I would also like to uncover some of his publications. Thank you for your consideration of this query, Daniel Woods, E-mail: dwoods@neocomm.net

DOHLD - DOLL - GRAHAM - MAUK - NOEL - ROTROCK -WALDERT

I believe I am a direct descendant of John DOLL. I have information that he bought land in 1786 in Hardy Co. VA. from Henry MAUK & wife. He then leased it to Henry WALDERT in 1792 and then bought land from Nickolas NOEL & wife 109A Lower Run of Patterson's Crk. His brother Jacob bought 216 A Waters of Patterson Crk. John sold his land 109A Lower Run & 30 A Lower Run to David ROTROCK in 1802. I believe that he then moved to Ohio.

This is where I need the connection to John DOLL - son of Jacob DOHLD who died in Hardy Co. VA. in 1798. I know that I am a direct descendant of John DOLL who lived in Ohio and married a Margaret GRAHAM in 1833 in Scioto Co., Ohio. Their son, Peter S. DOLL's death certificate indicated that his father was born in Ohio.

Margaret GRAHAM's father was Seth GRAHAM and her mother was Susannah NOEL who was born in Hampshire, VA. in the 1790s. I've probably indicated too much info; but, I know that I must be related to one of Jacob DOHLD's sons and John makes the most sense. If you can be of any help, I'd appreciate it very much. CLIFFORD - KENT - LETT - PECK - REDMAN - SMITH

Subject: Free People of Color, Hardy County, VA/WV
According to the 1790 Census, Hardy County, VA (now WV) was the only county in VA where free people of color outnumbered slaves. There were 411 free people of color and only 369 slaves. The 1810 Tax Lists for Hardy County, VA included 32 households of "Mulattoes" or "Free Negroes". Among the families I have researched during the period 1790 - 1880 (CLIFFORD, LETT, KENT, PECK, REDMAN, SMITH), some descendants remained in VA, others moved north into PA or west into OH by 1850.

Many of the more current descendants of these families are unaware that their early roots were in Hardy County,VA. I am hoping to go back even further to learn where these families were prior to 1790. It is possible that they were part of a group that migrated from NJ and PA. The challenge of genealogical research is further complicated by the fact that within certain families, some members identify themselves as "Black" and others identify themselves as "White".

If you are interested in exchanging information or learning more about these families of "Free People of Color", some of whom were already in Hardy County by the late 1700s, you may reach me at: rmcdaniel@erols.com. Thank you.

JACKSON - KENNEDY - ROSS - WASHINGTON

My name is Larry Hamilton. I am a teacher in Piqua, OH. In 1975, I was invited to take my class to a Black History program where it turned out that Alex Haley was the speaker. I excitedly made an audio tape with my grandmother on our oral history the next week and then afterwards put the tape in desk drawer where it stayed for 22 years. For the tape my grandmother had brought out the family Bible and cited the following:

Maggie or Margaret ROSS was my great grandmother. Her death certificate listed a John ROSS as her father and her mother's maiden name was listed as KENNEDY (Celia). According to my grandmother Esther Hannon Hamilton, Maggie was brought to Maineville, Warren Co. OH by some white people and worked on a dairy farm. The 1880 census confirms that she is just outside of that location which is just four miles away from our family residence in Loveland, OH.

I had assumed that she had been separated from her other family members but I recently discovered the family intact and located in Chilicothe, Ross Co., OH in the 1870 census. This was an unexpected discovery and raised more questions.

I have been to Ross Co. OH and there is a colored ROSS married woman listed without a given name as having died in 1867. This could be Celia and might indicate that the entire family came either during the Civil War or immediately thereafter.

The name of the farm superintendant for whom Maggie worked in 1880 was John A. TURNER He was listed as being born in PA.

There is another twist to my genealogical puzzle. We have a picture of "a cousin Andy JACKSON" (abt. 1930) in our family album. Older family members recall his visits to our hometown but do not know how he was related. In my research I found that his mother's name was Maggie WASHINGTON and that her father Archie WASHINGTON had married an Ann ROSS. I found that they had come from Grant Co. then later discovered that Grant County's parent county is Hardy Co. Aha! Now there are more and more questions.

I assume that the family has a slave background and would like help in documenting their experiences while living in Hardy County. Is there anyone able and willing to help? Thanking you in advance. Larry Hamilton, E-mail: newsorlose@wesnet.com

DAVIS

Looking for 2nd wife/children/descendants of James Moore DAVIS (1735/1736-1826). Supposedly, he was asked to name the new Hardy County Courthouse. He named it Moorefield in deference to his deceased mother, Jane Moore DAVIS. I believe his 2nd wife, with whom he had 7 sons, was from Hardy County. He moved back to his native Charles County, MD when the AmRev heated up. When he returned to MD after the war (c1781), his wife was dead and his children were in Hardy County with their maternal grandparents. Thanks! mary_chapman@peoplesoft.com

THARP

Seeking to share information about Zebulon and Jane THARP who lived south of Winchester, VA in the mid-to-late 1700s (near the intersection of Cooked Run and Stephens Run). Zebulon's will is on file in the Frederick County Courthouse (dated August 1, 1780). Zebulon's will names a son Andrew. The will indicates this Andrew had a daughter Elizabeth, who was to receive Andrew's bequeathed property upon Andrew's demise. Other sons named in Zebulon's will include Isaac, Joshua and John, Benjamin and Zebulon. Zebulon (who married Jane) was born in Middlesex County (Piscataway/Woodsbridge) NJ, son of Thomas Tharp (the 3rd generation Thomas), according to a very detailed family chart given to me by Joan Tharp of California.

My line of Tharps in Ohio begins with Isaac THARP, who married Magdelene SWISHER in Hardy County, VA (now WV), and moved to Licking County, Ohio in 1822. Isaac was son of John and Elizabeth THARP. Elizabeth's will is on file in Hampshire County, dated 6/24/1843 and probated 8-28-1863. Isaac had a brother named Solomon who married Hannah RUCKMAN, and lived at Horn Camp Run at present day Kirby, WV, and two sisters. Sister Ann married Caleb EVANS on 1-2-1826.

A handwritten family tree shows that John THARP's father was Andrew. Mike Tharp of Kansas City (who descends from Solomon, brother of my line Isaac), has original family documents, including a parchment paper that simply has the name Andrew Tharp, born the twelth day of March, 1727. Mike also has a document showing that Andrew pledged allegiance to the Common Wealth of Virginia on the 4th day of October, 1777. Land records show an Andrew bought 62 acres in Hardy County at Old Acres Run in 1790 and/or 1793.

So.....I am trying to either prove or disprove that my line Andrew THARP is son of Zebulon and Jane THARP of Frederick County, Virginia. Other area surnames connected with the THARPs are EVANS, BEEM, SWISHER, STOVER. E-mail: Bhtharp@aol.com

Seeking Victoria ORNDORFF, daughter of Jesse and Eliza? She was three years old in the 1850 census of Hardy County, then Virginia.

That census actually lists her as "E Victoria" but I don't have a clue what the E stands for. She apparently never used her actual first name, for she appeared only as Victoria when she married Joseph PICKERING in 1869 and appeared with him in the 1870 census - both in Greene County, OH. After that, I lose track of her again. Of course, I'll be happy to share what I have. E-mail: KPICKERING@tnema.org

Peter died at Gettysburg on July 2-3 1863 and then I have lost all traces of Susannah. In the 1870 Pendleton Co. census all of her four children show up living in different homes. Rev. BADGLEY's migrants to Illinois

In 1797 Reverend David BADGLEY, a Baptist minister from Hardy County, departed with 154 people for Illinois. They traveled on the Ohio River then went overland to their destination, the town of New Design, established in 1786 by Reverend James LEMEN, a friend of Thomas Jefferson, as a model frontier town in the anti-slavery Jeffersonian model. The trip was disastrous as the group encountered heavy flooding and an epidemic: half of them died. BADGLEY established the first Protestant church north of the Ohio River. Were your ancestors a of this group? Please contact direct at E-mail: ectocus@21stcentury.net Thanks, Nora

ASHBROOK - BAKER - RARNET - ROWE

I am researching Jacob BAKER whose will is dated 10-16-1821 in Hardy County. His wife is listed as Jemima (her father was John ASHBROOK); John, Aaron, Jacob, Levi, Cornelius, Abraham, sons; Rebecca ROWE, Mary BAKER, daus; others. I am descended from Jacob through his son Cornelius and his second wife, Lydia (?).

Is there any other information available for Jacob BAKER...parents, siblings, birth or marriage date, military information? I found a Jacob BAKER on the Romney Rolls (Rom. 12), Capt. Joseph Bowman's Pay Roll in the book Virginia Soldiers of 1776, but was told that this was probably not my Jacob.

Also, I need marriage date for Cornelius and Lydia (?) who was his second wife. Her maiden name may have been RARNET, which is I cannot verify. This is all that I know about Lydia. Thanks, Annette Rawls, Rison, Arkansas 71665, E-mail: jabr3640@tds.net

COOPER

I sent a query about Jacob COOPER on Sept. 19, 1998. Since then I have disproved his connection to my COOPER line. Now I am on the trail of Valentine COOPER, born 1720 England, came to PA with father Calvin in 1734, then to Westmoreland Co. VA around 1740, where he married and had at least one son, Spencer. Then Valentine moved to Hardy Co. VA before 1753 (with three brothers), and I have lost trace of him. BAKER - BEDINGER - CHRISMAN - REYNOLDS - STEWART

I am researching persons buried in a REYNOLDS/BEDINGER cemetery in Wardensville, Hardy, WV., especially family of Lorenzo and Sarah E. "Sallie" BAKER who "adopted" Susan E. CHRISMAN, enumerated as a 9-yr-old in the 1850 census of Lorenzo's household. VANNOY - WESTFALL

John WESTFALL, Sr., my relative was born in 1720 and died in Hardy County in 1789. Can anyone help me locate his grave or records of his burial. Also, would like to know if anyone is tracing this particular branch of the WESTFALL family.

The information in my possession tells me that I am the descendant of said John Westfall, Sr. (born Johannes and baptized in Kingston in 1724. This John Sr. was married to Sarah VANNOY and had six sons - Abel, Cornelius, John Jr., Jacob, Isaac and Abraham.

John Sr.'s sons (at least five of them) moved to Knox Co. Indiana. Is anyone aware of any record of the marriage of any of the sons that were recorded in Hardy/Hampshire Co. prior to 1800. I am looking for records for Cornelius (b. 1756), Abel (b 1754), John Jr., (b. ca. 1757), Jacob or Isaac. Anything that someone has on any of these sons or John Sr. would be greatly appreciated.

Documents lead me to believe that John Jr. was my ggg-grandfather. These brothers were born sometime between the years 1754 - 1768. Only Jacob remained in W. Va. The rest traveled through Ohio, Abel founding the town of Westfall near Circleville, Ohio and eventually all settled in the Northwest Territory, specifically Knox County, Indiana. I have visited the grave sites of Abel and Cornelius who are buried in Bloomfield (Greene Co. Indiana). John Jr. and Abraham are buried in Indiana Presbyterian Cemetery in or near Vincennes, Indiana. My desire is to document the link between my gg-grandfather and John, Jr. and the records are rather poor after 1783 when John Jr. went to the Vincennes area. If I can locate birth and/or marriage records for him, it might help me. E-mail:CFimiani@aol.com
