Abandoned Ivy

by

Marie put the wedding bouquet

On top of the refrigerator

After the wedding.

She later removed the ivy,

Placed it in water,

And let it root again.

It was anchored firmly in the pot

When she gave it to me

As a gift -- my wedding ivy.

It became the symbol of undying love.

I gave it devoted attention and nurture

For a full 25 years.

Then, after too many caustic words

Had made furrows on my brow

And bruises on my soul, I left.

The ivy had weathered the storms,

But I had not.

Reluctantly, I abandoned the ivy,

and began anew.
