Mt Moriah Church Cemetery - Jackson County, WV

Directions: From Ripley, go east on Rt 62 almost 1 mile, turn left (south) on Parchment Valley Road. Go slowly enough to enjoy the scenery and avoid on-coming traffic, there is not enough room to pass anything really big, like a school bus. Although it seems like much further, it's really only about 5 miles to the church. There is no sign at road level, but there was gravel on the road from where traffic had driven up and down the hill. It's a very steep gravel road going up the hill on the left - be brave and take it up the short hill.

The cemetery is fenced and fairly well tended, although there are several stones that have fallen. Some have been picked up and are leaning on their old bases. There is a lovely hickory tree and nuts were scattered all around. I visited the cemetery on May 8, 2006. Photos were taken of all of the markers. If you'd like a higher resolution picture, contact Betty Briggs

I am very grateful to the Jackson County Historical Society (JCHS) for the transcription of this cemetery in a much earlier time when the stones were not so eroded. My comments are in brackets [ ] and include information from my own database, available at West Virginia Pioneers .
