McCloud, J H D. 1860 (no age) [ from "Jackson County Cemeteries, Vol 2" by the Jackson County Historical Society, with permission.]
Legend passed down the years is the inscription on the original marker was J. or G. H. McCloud, died 1860. The current marker isnít engraved. Itís the grave of a child, killed accidentally by his father while storing a single tree (item used to connect a load to a horse for pulling, usually wooden with steel hooks and eyes), hitting the boy in the head, resulting in the boyís death. The grave is marked off and always decorated with flowers.
In the 1860 Jackson County census, Fishers Point Post Office, there is a family of McClouds. The parents are David, age 60, and Sarah, age 50, with sons N.B., age 20; C, age 17; and Henry, age 4. G.H. was probably little Henry. The family was no longer in Jackson County in 1870.
There is also a death record for Geo. McCloud, age 7, in March 1860. He was born in Harrison County to S & J McCloud. Jane McCloud, age 31, died in March 1860 as well, and her death was reported by SM McCloud. I suspect she was George's mother, and while it is possible this child is the one who lies in this grave, where is Jane?
