ASSESSORS of

JACKSON CO. WV

The county officer now known as the Assessor was known as the Commissioner of Revenue before West Virginia became a state, June 20, 1863. From 1873 to 1910 the county was divided into a Northern and a Southern district, with an Assessor elected for each district. note: W. A. "Bill" Riggs, of Sandyville, served longer than any other person, almost 40 years, which is also a record for county officers in Jackson County.

note: In the Jackson County Commission meeting of July 3, 1984. The Commission appointed Clifford F. Kerwood for the unexpired term of W.A. Riggs to start immediately. "Now by law that would last until the next election which was in November. Then someone would have to be elected for a term of about two months." Mr. Kerwood signed up for the unexpired term and was elected with 5685 votes. This term ended January 1, 1985. (This is a correction from the original information contained in the book.)
