JUSTICES OF THE PEACE, 1884-1990

The magistrate system took over from the justice of the peace system in the 1976 election, two magistrates being elected for the county, and having much more authority than under the old justice of the peace system. Formerly two justices could be elected from each magisterial district. However, they usually had so little to do that, towards the last, hardly anyone other than in Ripley and Ravenswood districts bothered to run for the office. I could not locate records on justices serving before the 1884 election.
