Title: "The Memories and Writings of Harold David Somerville, 'Tommie Sewell' "
A series of three volumes will be completed of H. D. Somervilles work. This is a collection of work sometimes written by Somerville under the pen name of Tommie Sewell. Tommie Sewell was a young boy that traveled from the Chesapeake Bay area of Maryland with the Hayward family in the 1820’s. The Haywards were great grandparents of Somerville and it was through his grandmother Jane Hayward Somerville and listening to her talk of early stories that he became interested in recording family history. Somerville had kept notes and wrote articles spanning a time frame from the 1920s to the 1970s.
Somerville was born in 1895 and died in 1973. He wrote about families in Wirt and Jackson Counties, West Virginia.
With so many things fading with age and deteriorating his daughter and granddaughter, Pauline Somerville Smith and Lola Smith, endeavored to finish what he started so many years ago. His goal was to put his writings in book form. When we are finished we hope to have three volumes. Volume I is completed and Volume II we hope to have available in the fall of 2000.
