Trying to find parents/siblings of Andrew Jackson BUTLER (b. abt. 1835). Birthplace listed as either Lewis or Kanawah Counties. Three BUTLER families appear on the 1830 Nicholas Co. census. They all also appear on the 1840 Braxton County census. All three had sons of the correct age to have been Andrew Jackson. The fathers of these BUTLER families were Benjamin, Jeremiah, and Joseph. Does anyone have anything which might tie one of these families to Andrew Jackson BUTLER?

LEWIS. Need parents for Joseph and Mary Kesling Lewis. Their son Andrew b. ca 1812 in VA m. Mary Forinash b. ca. 1812. This couple (in 1850 census for Barbour Co.) had fourteen children, one of which was Hannibal Porter Lewis who was b. 30 Jan, 1847 in Buckhannon, Upshur Co., WV. Hannibal Porter Lewis married Samantha Wildermute b. 1858.

We have the lines forth from Hannibal. Biographical write-up in "History of Upshur Co" in regard to one of Hannibal's brothers, Henry H. Lewis, makes the claim that the line goes back to General Andrew Lewis, and says that Lewis Co., WV was named for the General's NEPHEW. Our information indicated that Lewis Co. was named for Col. Andrew Lewis's brother Charles. Would appreciate any help and guidance in connecting our most distant proven ancestor, Joseph and Mary Kesling Lewis. Was Joseph a son of General Andrew Lewis?

MR JAMES D MUSGRAVE       Sat, 7 Jun 1997

Please let me introduce myself: My name is James Dallas Musgrave, son of William Dallas Musgrave, born September 2, 1959, in Monongalia County, West Virginia. Like my forefathers back to my  great-grandfather five times removed, we have spent our lives in Monongalia County VA/WV area.

I often look at the photo of my great-great-grandfather Ephraim Hall Musgrave and wish he could reveal the lost history of his life. After being emotionally affected by the writings and stories of Samuel Corder Musgrave, I wondered how I may be related to this exceptional person. These and other reasons are what I attribute to my pursuit of the Musgrave family history.

For most of my life I lived in Morgantown, WV, but for the last seven years I have lived in Arlington, VA. Living in Arlington has allowed me access to some of the largest reference libraries available to the genealogist. With the help of county birth, marriage, death records, other genealogist and written county histories, I have pieced together the history of early VA/WV Musgrave settlers. To date, I am researching three distinct Musgrave families that have settled in the Virginia, now West Virginia area around the late 1700's and early 1800's.

Samuel Musgrave, born in Lancaster County, Pa in 1747, moved to Monongalia County, Va. Samuel and his wife, Elizabeth (Brand) Musgrave, lived in Monongalia County for 28 years. Leaving behind some of their 12 children, Samuel and Elizabeth moved to Muhlenburg County, KY. Later they moved to Warrick County, IN, where they both later died. A lot is known about Samuel and his family, but who Samuel's father is has eluded myself and other genealogists. It's a good chance that Samuel may be a direct descendant of two brothers John and Moses Musgrave who immigrated from Belfast, Ireland. John came to the New World as an indentured servant to Valentine Hollingsworth in 1682. After John completed his commitment on Mr. Hollingsworth's plantation, his brother Moses made the voyage to the New World. Both John and brother Moses later settled and started their families in the Lancaster County, Pennsylvania area.

I have found no published history past the late 1700's for my direct line of Elijah Musgrave and his descendants. Elijah Musgrave shows up on the Monongalia County, VA 1830 U.S. Census where he listed his wife and himself as 80-90 years old. I also found an old Upshur County History publication stating Elijah and his wife Bashebah were direct immigrants from Germany. Due to many old Monongalia County documents being lost or destroyed during the Civil War, I have been unable to prove or disprove the Upshur County History publication. I'm currently working on a few leads that point to the direction of Elijah Musgrave being a brother or cousin to Samuel Musgrave and the family from Lancaster, Pa. John Musgrave and Ellen (Stewart) Musgrave, both natives of VA, and of Dutch and Irish extraction, moved from Harvey County, VA, to Mason County, VA, just after the war of 1812. Later they moved to Ohio, and then to Warren County, IN. Asa Musgrave, son of John and Ellen Musgrave, born in 1804, in Hardy County, VA, did not follow his parents west and remained in Mason County, VA. Asa Musgrave and his wife Mary (Yeager) settled on a farm in Robinson District of Mason County. Asa Musgrave died in 1879 survived by his wife Mary and two children Mary E. and Elijah Green Musgrave.

I realize that I have acquired a good bit of information on past Musgrave generations, but have little information on present day generations. I need to ask for your help in gathering information on present day generations of Musgrave's. If you share with me your Musgrave family history, photographs or photocopies and stories, I will be happy to share my Musgrave information with you and try to link you to one of the West Virginia Musgrave ancestors. After organizing the history, I would like to compile and publish my findings. I will offer it and updates at no charge to those families that took time and helped contribute information.

So please, take the time and write down the history of your Musgrave family members that may have migrated to and from the VA/WV area. I hope you can help me accomplish my goals in preserving the Musgrave families throughout West Virginia and beyond. Preserving our Musgrave family history will make it much easier for future Musgrave generations to find their ancestry.

If you have any questions, suggestions or comments, please feel free to call, write, visit or e-mail me.  Sincerely,   James (Jim) Dallas Musgrave   225 North Piedmont Street   Arlington, Virginia. 22203   703-524-1066  Thanks again!  Sincerely,  JDM (Jim) :)

SIMMONS - Trying to identify siblings and parents of Catherine SIMMONS who married Joel MARTIN about 1796. Catherine was born circa 1777. Joel and Catherine were in Harrison County by 1803. Their land fell into Lewis Co. where they were living in 1830 when they sold the land to move to Cass Co., Indiana. Catherine might have been related to Leonard SIMMONS of Lewis Co., who died there in 1825. Leonard had daughters: Mary, Catherine, Susannah Permelia, Lydia, and possibly Elizabeth. The surname is variously spelled SIMONS, SIMOND, SYMON, SIMMONS, etc.

Grove(s) born July 7,1870 and my grandmother was Daisy Lee Wellen born Sept 22, 1878. My grandfather's father's name was Horace Grove(s) and his grandfather was Seldon Grove(s). Joyce Ann Dumire      .          Mon. Dec. 8, 1997

Upshur County is my connection, with just a little in Lewis County. If I have any names you are searching for, just let me know any specifics.

Sylvester John Sines is my great grandfather. Myrtle Sines is his daughter.

I am searching & have information on surnames: Sines, Helmick, Rogers, Martin, Williams, & Dumire    Location: WV, VA, some PA & OH

My grandfather died when my mother was 5 years old. His name was Charles Edward Helmick & would have died about 1932-33. He married Myrtle Sines. They lived in Monongalia County in West Virginia (this county touches PA).

I have about 1800 names with info. Most information is on the Martins and the Sines.

I am looking for information on Laban and Nancy/Hannah Racer.

Nancy/Hannah's parents were John and Margaret Sims. I have been told that both families appear in Lewis County around 1830. They moved to Lewis County from Culpepper County, VA.

Their son, John Sampson Racer, was married there in 1851. He married Eliza Jane McClain from Nelson County, Va. Eliza's parents were William McClain and Martha Graves. Her brother was Addison McClain. Any help will be greatfully appreciated.

I'm looking for information on the family of Jonathan LEWIS (b. abt 1818 VA., d. 1899 Lewis Co.WV). He appears with family in the 1850 Census and later. There is a Christiana(?)ROMINE (b. abt 1794) who may be a mother-in-law. Jonathan's children married into the folowing families:

HARPER, WILFONG, YEAGER, WHITE, MURPHY, and HOUGHTON. My line, John G.(b. 1846), moved to Gallia County, Ohio where he married a Julia YEAGER in 1879.

I am a descendant of ISAAC ROSE. Elizabeth Sanders wrote a book, "The Descendants of Isaac Rose."

Isaac was born 1753 at Chambersburg, PA, d. Feb. 17, 1829, and is buried on his farm at Birch River, Nicholas Co., VA/WV. A DAR monument was erected at his gravesite June 24, 1979.

He married Margaret Forsythe, b. Nov. 1756, d. Nov. 30, 1843, and is buried in Braxton Co., VA/WV.

They were the parents of six children. The first child William was born about 1786 in Chambersburg, but the third child born 1794 was born in VA/WV.

I was told she (Elizabeth Sanders) is or was a resident of Lewis County. Can someone confirm?

I believe Elizabeth Sanders is still alive, and I think she is a retired school teacher. I am assuming she taught in Lewis County.

I would like very much to get a copy of the book, or at least see the book. Would there be a copy in the Lewis County Library?

I know of a few people who would like to see the book, but none of us are able to find a copy. I do not know when it would have been copyrighted. Thank you.

I am trying to find ancestors or descendants of my ggg grandfather. His name was Samuel McCan (nn) He was born 1815. Married Jane Wyatt (or Elizabeth Jane Wyatt. Their chilldren were

Other children of Samuel were Henry, b 1844, may have m Angeline Weise in Ohio.

My direct line was from Squire Bosworth McCann. I have a lot of information on  his family, as they remained in West Va. He had married Roxanne Gould, the dtr of Nathan Gould Jr. . I f anyone has any information on Samuel's family members, I would very much appreciate it. I am a senior citizen, and am creating family history books to leave for my children aand grandchildren. I believe it is very important that we all have some knowledge of our roots.

We have been searching for the parents of William McCann and his wife Sarah Ann Lanham with no success. They were married in Augusta County Va in 1814. They had sons Samuel, b 1815, other sons were John, Henry, William, Charles. I have McCann history, as I see no McCan - McCann families listed here, They were in Monroe, Lewis, and Upshur Counties in W Va

Does anyone out there know anything about William McCann, b 1792, married Sarah Ann Lanham 1814. their children: Henry, John, William Samuel James. Daughter Elizabeth (I have that info.) She married John Tenney. I have the names of the other dtrs, but need more info on Samuel, (m. Jane Wyatt) born 1815,and his father William McCann. Have been unable to locate birth , marriage records for William and birth records of Samuel to connect him to William OR perhaps another father.

Also a Henry McCann born in the 1700's. Any McCanns out there doing research on this McCann family? Samuel's son was Squire Bosworth McCann, married to Roxanne Gould, Squires son William J. McCann was my grandfather.

Thanks in advance for your help
