Stalnaker Family Reunion
July 12-13, 2008

Anyone who is now or ever has been a Stalnaker or whose ancestors were part of the Stalnaker family (by birth, marriage, or adoption), their family and friends wherever they may be are invited and encouraged to attend the Annual Stalnaker Family Reunion, July 12th & 13th, 2008.

Saturday, July 12th, Research Day

For the second year, the Annual Stalnaker Family Reunion, regularly scheduled for the 2nd Sunday of July (July 13th), has been extended to include a day of research at the Central West Virginia Genealogy and History on Saturday, July 12th. The library is located in Horner, Lewis County, WV, where the Stalnaker Family Association Archives are held. The research day is led by Joy Stalnaker, SFA secretary. The hours will be 10 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. Participants are encouraged to bring a sack lunch.

The library is located a half-block from the junction of U.S. Route 33 and Georgetown-Horner Road. Directions from I-79: Turn right (toward Buckhannon) when exiting I-79. Go approx.

3 miles to the Georgetown-Horner crossroads, turn left. The library will be directly in front of you in the historic Horner Schoolhouse.

While in Lewis County, you will also have an opportunity to visit the Georgetown Cemetery where a number of Stalnaker ancestors are buried as well as the private burial site north of Jane Lew, Lewis Co., of Samuel Stalnaker (1763-Oct 1834), s/o Jacob and Elizabeth (Truby) Stalnaker and probably that of his wife, Susannah (nee Radcliff). This Samuel Stalnaker raised John Whitman Stalnaker, the son of his brother Adam who was killed by Indians near Beverly in 1782/83??. FYI, John Whitman's older brother, also named Adam, was raised by Jacob Stalnaker, Jr., another brother of the Adam killed by Indians in 1782/83. The Jane Lew site is on private property. Joy will lead a tour to that site leaving the library at 2 p.m. Those who expect to take this tour MUST be able to climb a rather steep hill to the grave site.

Sunday, July 13th, Reunion Day

On Sunday, we will gather at Camp Pioneer, near Beverly, WV. (See directions below) for a day of fun, fellowship and business. Bring your potluck dinner and come prepared to enjoy some wonderful food and great fellowship!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We need the names of family members who have passed on to

their Great Reward since July 8, 2007. Either mail these to our secretary, Joy Stalnaker, prior July 12th or bring them, legibly written, to the reunion.

Donate items for the auction! New or gently used items are acceptable. Remember folks really love to purchase family memorabilia that you might have and wish to part with. These family items should be labeled so family members know the history of the item on which they are bidding. If you have items to donate but cannot come to the reunion, please call or write Rex Stalnaker for further instructions.

PLACE: Camp Pioneer DIRECTIONS: Take Rt. 219 South of  Beverly, WVA; Turn left Rt. 1, Box  24 Back Rd. (Rt. 37) & go 2 miles to Camp Beverly,  WV 26253 Pioneer. (Follow  reunion signs from Beverly.)

Jacob Stalnaker Cabin Repairs

Work on the cabin proceeded more or less according to plan last year. Project Director Ed Stalnaker was able to get the internal stairwell completed to the second floor. Two trees, one an apple and the other an maple, and a rail fence added a "homey" feeling to the yard

While Ed would have liked to proceed with installation of the flooring to the second floor, he believes it is more important to add a back porch on the cabin. The porch will serve as protection for the logs on that side of the building.

He has some funds on hand but encourages your continued support through donations to get the project finished. He estimates the cost to be $4000. He hopes to get the porch built prior to the Stalnaker Family Association Reunion on July 13th.

Donations toward the cost are tax-deductible and are encouraged. They should be made payable to the Stalnaker Cabin, Randolph County Historical Society. For more information or to send donations, contact

Ed Stalnaker
PO Box 616
Mill Creek, WV 26280

The cabin, originally located about three miles from Beverly near today's Bruce Hardwood mill site, was built ca 1785 by Jacob and Elizabeth (Truby) Stalnaker, progenitors of most, if not all, Stalnakers in present-day West Virginia and points beyond. As part of a SFA effort to preserve our family history and in conjunction with the Randolph County Historical Society, it was moved to a lot behind the Randolph County Historical Society in 1995. It's restoration has been an on-going project since that time. Funding and much of the back-breaking work has been mostly the contributions of family members and the annual auction at the Stalnaker Family Reunion. Your generous support has been appreciated! One day this project will be complete!

Latest on Jackson Brigade Reunion 2004 at Parkersburg, Wood County, West Virginia

Plans are underway for the 2004 Jackson Brigade Reunion, scheduled for August, 2004, in Parkersburg, West Virginia.

The date is set at Friday August 6, Saturday August 7 and Sunday August 8, 2004.

We have confirmation of the facilities. Here's a rough schedule we've come up with (subject to revision, of course):

Friday, August 6: A pre-reunion gathering at the Fissel home in Cairo, West Virginia, from which we'll take a caravan-style tour of family-related sites in the Cairo-Cisco area. The tour will likely be of interest only to those directly connected to the family and die-hard family historians; it may require a bit of walking. We'll eat at the Fissels either before or after the tour.

Saturday, August 7: We'll meet at the community building in Jackson Park, Vienna (adjacent to Parkersburg) for reunion registration, mingling and a coffee-and-donut breakfast. Following breakfast, we'll depart on a bus tour of historic family-related sites in Parkersburg, including the Jackson fountain in City Park, the James M. Jackson bust/fountain in courthouse square, Riverview Cemetery, and--we hope--a couple of additional spots. We have the community building rented for the whole day, and folks will be welcome to have lunch there and chat, but many may wish to further explore the Parkersburg area singly or in groups.

Sunday, August 9: We will depart from Point Park, Parkersburg aboard an Ohio River sternwheeler for a picnic on nearby Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park. The picnic will include a speaker on local history, our business meeting and memorial service.

The Hinchman Heritage Society, which includes all Hinchmans, Henchmans, and Hensmans, will hold their annual conference August 7-10 at Jenny Wiley State Park near Prestonsburg, Kentucky. The theme for the 2002 conference will be "Music in the Mountains", and will include a variety of musical entertainment, as well as research, workshops, and exchange of genealogical information.

For more information call (606)- 874-2821 or (606)-874-9938. Information can also be obtained via e-mail from Sharon Hinchman Tebben, rtebben@intrepid.net

The event is sponsored by the Hinchman Heritage Society (HHS), an organization founded in Huntington in 1994 and dedicated to pursuing genealogical research and promoting social contact between descendants of the Hinchmans who first came to America from England.

HHS incorporates families with all three of the variant spellings of the name:

Hinchman, Henchman, and Hensman. Research has confirmed that persons bearing those names hail from common ancestors in England. West Virginia Hinchmans are especially invited to attend to help extend a warm mountain welcome to cousins from around the country.
