Marion County Timeline

1763 - John Beall settles on Buffalo Creek.

1770 - John Ice settled at the forks of the Buffalo.

1774 - Dunmore's War

1776 - The town of Pleasantville becomes the first legal town in Virgina west of the Allegheny Mountains.

1786 - Robert Rutherford has the town of Mannington surveyed.

1814 - Boaz Fleming begins circulating a petition to form a new county.

1820 - Middletown (now Fairmont) established.

1814 - Boaz Fleming begins efforts to create a new county, to be named Madison County. 1820 - Middletown chartered

1837 - A Post Office is established at Rivesville (formerly Pleasantville).

1842 - Marion County formed.

1843 - The name of Middletown is changed to Fairmont.

1868 - Fairmont State Normal School established.

1876 - Fire destroys much of Fairmont's business district.

1899 - Fairmont enlarged to include West Fairmont and Palatine.
