This McCreary Cemetery information was submitted by the late Sylvia Sligar on behalf of the McCreary Cemetery Preservation Foundation.
McCreary Cemetery is located eight miles out of Moundsville on U.S. 250 South at Limestone. At a sign there indicating Palace Road, turn left and follow Palace Road (Formerly McCreary Ridge) past the Palace of Gold one-half mile to the fork in the road. Directly in front of you will be McCreary Cemetery.
NOTE - January 19, 2015: Gerald Plants was the force behind the project to preserve the McCreary Cemetery. He died January 8, 2015. - May he rest in peace.
Gerald "Jerry" Plants, 80, of Benwood died Thursday, January 8, 2015 at Cameron Nursing Nursing Home. - He was born January 2, 1935, in Marshall County son of the late Walter and Olive McWhorter Plants. - Jerry was a retired inspector from the WVDOH, former employee at the Olin Chemical Company formerly Allied Chemical Co., a former employee of Wheeling Tile Co. until the plant closed, founder, president and chairman of the McCreary Cemetery Preservation Association, member and past president of the Marshall County Historical Society, member of the Genealogical Society of Southwestern PA, member of Simpson United Methodist Church, Moundsville and a U.S. Army veteran stationed in Germany. - In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Shaw Plants. - Survivors include two daughters: Debby (Randy) Whitlatch of Moundsville and Brenda (Clay) Harris of Woodsfield, OH; two grandchildren: Tiffany Danhart of Martins Ferry and Kelsey Whitlatch of Moundsville; two brothers: Ronnie (Carolie) Plants of Wheeling and Jim (Sharon) Plants of Warwood; several nieces and nephews, and his devoted cat: Gretchen. - The family will receive friends on Saturday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the Grisell Funeral Home & Crematory, 1 Ridgecrest Road, Wheeling/Bethlehem, where funeral services will be held on Sunday at 1 p.m. with Mike Eskridge officiating. - Interment in Limestone Cemetery, Moundsville where the Honor Guard will conduct Military Graveside Services. - Memorial Contributions may be made to the McCreary Cemetery Preservation Foundation, c/o 30 Virginia Oaks Dr., Moundsville, WV 26041.

This indenture made this 14th day of October Eighteen Hundred and Fifty two, between me, Thomas McCreary, of the County of Marshall and State of Virginia of the one part, and Alexander Caldwell, Thomas Coffelt, and John T. McCreary (as Trustees) of the other part, and these successers forever as a place of deposit for the dead, Witnessth, that the said Thomas McCreary for any consideration of Five Dollars to him in hand paid the receipt whereof doth hereby acknowledges both bargains and sold and by these presents doth confirm and convey to the said second, a certain lot of ground lying and being in Marshall County and State of Virginia on Big Wheeling Creek containing one acre and bordered as follows,Begin-ning at a stake in William McCreary line and with said line, South 19 1/4 West8 1/2 poles to a stone in the road thence North 73 1/2 West 14 poles to a white oak stump, thence North 19 1/4 East 12 poles to a stone, thence South 73 1/2 East 11 poles to the beginnings, which lot of land with the appurtances thereto belonging or in anywise apportaining to the said trustees and and their successors the said Thomas McCreary, his heirs and assigns doth convenant to and with the said trustees that the said with the appurtances thereto belonging and from his heirs and assigns any other person or persons whatever claiming or hereafter to claim right-title or claim thereto will warrant and forever defend . In testimony whereof the said Thomas McCreary has subscribed his name and affixed his seal the day and year above written.
