Sand Hill Methodist Church - History of Sandhill Church from The Echoer, Vol 1, #, 10 May 1, 1968.

In 1769 the first white people settled in the Sand Hill District of Marshall Co. John Wetzel built his home along Big Wheeling Creek soon after the Earlewines & Siverts settled on the ridge.

After the Indians had been sent across the river in Ohio, a large house was built over a tree stump 3 feet in diameter. It was really 2 houses with a connecting one of boards and was used as an Inn before the railroad.

About 1820, Ebenezer Buchanan sold the house to Richard & Mary Marsh, who had come from England and had heard Chas. Wesley preach. He soon had religious meetings in his big house.

Rev. Isaac Davis preached there often. He owned the Elliot farm & his daughter married John Winters. Sand Hill was then called Apple Pie Ridge.

Uncle Matthew Marsh, cousin of Richard, would prop the floor of the house for fear of accident because of the large crowd, until a log school house was built.

The first Sunday School was started in 1836 by Edward Dent Heatherington, who had married, Hannah, daughter of Richard Marsh. Hannah died in 1844 and as there was no cemetery there, she was buried in Presby. Cemetery at Haneytown, now Dallas.

Richard Marsh then gave ground for a cemetery. Daniel Dague was a member of the committee.

Hannah Heatherington, granddaughter of Richard Marsh, married Isaac D. Winters, grandson of Rev. Isaac Davis.

The Marshes gave all the timber for the church, boarded the workmen and gave some gold pieces for the cornerstone. A pew was dedicated to Mary Marsh, who died, 12 June 1876. Richard died 16 Oct 1867.

The founders were: Matthew Marsh, Richard Marsh, Abraham Marsh, William Turner, William Duke, George Jones, Thomas McCreary, Joseph Thompson, Joseph Lewis, Daniel Dague, Andy Dague, Abe Fry, Hanson Davis, Jacob Earlewine, John Winters, and E. D.Heatherington.

Samuel Turner furnished the wood and candles for services.

A new building was built in 1881 - 1882. Daniel Hartley did the foundation work; Matthew Marsh put a coin in the corner stone.

Those responsible for work were: John Dague, Charles Jones, Samuel Warden, AIfred Turner, Samuel Turner, C.W. Marsh, Jobe Marsh, I.D. Winters, William Dague, Frederick Dague, James Rogers, Daniel Winters, Wesley Winters, Isaac Davis, Nelson Davis, Hudson Davis, Alex Porter, Joseph Lewis, James Dague, and Robert Blake.

The contractor was Andrew Ernest, aided by sons, George and Isaac .

Inscriptions on large monuments:

* Luella Blanche McCreary Luke: With her last breath she sang "Jesus Lover of My Soul"
* Hanna R. Winters: The only grandchildren of Hannah Marsh Heatherington who was the only child of Mary & Richard Marsh, 1947:
Richard Isaac, Mary Eliza, John Edward, Annabell, R.N., Albert Davis, Elizabeth Jane, George Nelson, Daisy May, June Heatherington
The dedication is written on a plaque at the bottom of the marker. on each end of the marker was Capt E. D. Heatherington and ? Lt I.D. ? Heatherington? Winters
