Taylor's Ridge Cemetery

Submitted by Ethel Briggs.

3/12/1999 - Corrections/updates submitted by Clarice Stanley.

Located on Taylor's Ridge.

Note from Clarice Stanley, 1999: This cemetery is VERY SELDOM used now. About half of this ridge is closed off because the Hanna Coal Company bought all the land beginning right past this Cemetery, (starting with our old farm) and going to the Ohio River. No one is allowed on this land, as there is a gate across the roadway at this Cemetery. The land is all grown up, and makes one sad. I guess there is much mining under this area, and it is considered unsafe. This is the part the Swans lived on, by the way.

UPDATE, Dec 2009, from Colette Trader: The cemetery is fully accessible and is well maintained (especially for being a non active cemetery... better than most that I have been to). The church is no longer there, but you can tell exactly where it was and the bell is still there. Most of the stones are readable, but there are many that cannot be read.

(Note from Clarice Stanley: Melvina died, leaving a young son, Shelva H. This son killed his father, Theodore, accidentally. He was on the upper level of the barn, as his father was unloading the hay wagon with a large fork which pulled the hay up in the barn. Shelva, about 10 years old, dropped the fork as he was sending it back down and it struck his father and killed him - Theodore was the brother of Mary Gatts who married Andrew Jackson Yoho. The parents of Theodore & Mary were Peter Gatts and #1 wife, Ellen (Monteith) Gatts.)

The wife, Mary Long Swan,b. 1817, d. 1897. They lived on Taylors Ridge and I remember seeing all these children's markers there. An epidemic of some kind? His father, Henry Swan, was in 1810 Ohio County, VA/WV census; Tenmile Country book says he died at Grave Creek (1774 -1823). His wife, Elizabeth, remarried William Burge. Could Rememberance be buried there?)
