Wayman Methodist Cemetery

Submitted by Phyllis Slater.

Located on the left fork of Wayman's Ridge, near Limestone, Marshall County. There are many unmarked graves and a lot of old markers that could not be read. There were some graves over the fence and in the weeds we (Ethel Briggs & Ada Finnicum) did not get to.

The church was built on land owned by William Wayman and organized in 1825 by Ephraim Wayman who was a circuit rider for the Methodist church. The Waymans are not buried here.

According to an article in the Moundsville Echo in 1937, "As was the custom of the pioneers, each farm set apart a spot, a place to bury their dead. On a knoll overlooking the cabin home is a spot where lie many of the Price people. There, too, are the earthly remains of the slaves who were more than loyal to their masters. A monument is there to the memory of a SISTER of Butler Blue, who died from accidental burns. Beside her remains was placed the earthly body of this faithful man of color (BUTLER BLUE)." - This article refers to the PRICE family property on Wayman's Ridge. Butler Blue, a servant, resided with the Silas Price family in the 1870 and 1880 census records. Members of the Price family are buried at the Wayman's Ridge Cemetery.

NOTE FROM NAOMI LOWE HUPP:

"I have been to the Price property on Wayman's Ridge. When I was there the cemetery had been disrupted and the monuments were leaning against a tree. The monuments of Butler Blue and his wife were there. I was interested in my ancestor -- JOHN HILL PRICE. His monument was also there against a tree. We secured permission and with help from some of the members of the Marshall County Historical Society it was relocated in the Waymans Ridge Cemetery.

JOHN HILL PRICE was born 22 Feb 1762 in North Farnham Parish, Virginia and died 19 Oct 1845 at the age of 83 yrs, 6 mos, 27 days.

When he and his brother, Arjalon, Jr., moved to Ohio County (WV) about 1830, they brought their slaves with them. Later when the slaves were freed, Butler Blue and his wife asked to remain with them. - A daughter of Arjalon, Jr. was Louise, who married a Parriott. Arjalon Jr.'s son was Silas.
