Clara Hupp's Autograph Book

Submitted by Virginia Simms Toney, gr-granddaughter.

Clara (Hupp) Simms

     This Autograph Book belonged to Clara Hupp, who later became the wife of George Miller Simms. Their son, Melvin Porter Simms, my grandfather, was 13 when his mother died. Clara's youngest daughter, Pearl, was only four when Clara died but she had the Autograph Book in her possession.

     Upon the death of Pearl (Simms) Murray, who had her mother's autograph book, Pearlís family collection went to her only child, Eleanor Murray, born December 23, 1910 in West Virginia. Eleanor died June 10, 2000 in Claremont, California. Eleanorís vast collection of artifacts from Tibet went to the University of California, Berkeley, Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology. When going through the materials, the archivist found a bankerís box containing many pictures, as well as the autograph book of Clara Hupp. They contacted me as they felt a family member should have these items; they sent me a rather large box of family treasures.

     George Miller Simms was born September 9, 1851 in Greene County, Pa., near the West Virginia state line. He was the son of John Simms, Jr. and Philene Miller. He married Clarissa (Clara) L. George Miller Simms died October 15, 1912 and Clarissa died May 14, 1891, Cameron, Marshall Co. W. Va. George Miller Simms' death certificate and obituary show he died in Wheeling, W. Va.          After the death of Clara, George Miller Simms married Jessie B Jones in 1893.

         George Miller Simms died at #2201 Eoff St., Wheeling, W.Va., according to his obituary in The Ravenswood News of October 23, 1912. The news article as follows:

    "George M. Simms, a retired B & O engineer and a respective resident of Ravenswood, passed away last evening at No. 2201 Eoff Street, he having come to this city six weeks ago, on a visit. He had been ill for a period of but two weeks, of a complication of diseases and his death, while it comes as a shock to the friends and members of the immediate family, was not wholly unexpected. Mr. Simms was born near Cameron, W.Va. 09 Sept 1851, and therefore was in the 62nd year of his age at the time of his death. He followed railroading during his more active years, but retired to private life a few years ago. He was generally esteemed in the community in which he lived and had come to this city to await the arrival of a son, who is on his way here from Idaho on a visit. A wife, Mrs. Jessie Simms, survives, also five sons and daughters. Funeral services will be held at Quiet Dell, east of Cameron, probably Friday. -- Wheeling Paper." (Quiet Dell is also referred to as Wise Cemetery.)

    An obituary in the Clarksburg Telegram (W. Va.) dated June 20, 1932 for a William E. Simms : GRAFTON, WV A military funeral will be accorded Wm. E. Simms, the adopted son of George Simms, retired B & O railroad employee, of 614 Ona St. at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Bartlett funeral home, McGraw Ave. Burial will be made in the National Cemetery here. {My note: I have no other information on this Wm. E. Simms.}

    An interesting fact I learned in researching George Miller Simms applied for a marriage licence to marry Carrie Olive Jeffreys 12 Jan 1892. Her place of residence was Littleton, WV in Wetzel Co. and she was single 28 years of age. Sixteen months later, George Miller Simms, age 39, married 18 year old Jessie B. Jones of Aleppo, Greene Co., PA. Her parents, A. A. and Elisabeth Jones, signed permission for her marriage on 16 May 1893.
