Note #1 for WILLIAM DELBRIDGE:

From the book, "OTHER DAYS," written by Jack Sandy Anderson; Pg's. 13 & 14:

(The house mentioned in this article is the Elder Levi Shinn house in Shinnston, WV, I have included a picture of this house under the Marriage scrapbook for William Delbridge and Anne Luke).

In 1876 the Delbridge family became the house's owner.  William Delbridge, the progenitor of the family, was born in Cornwall, England, in 1833.  A master stonecutter and sculptor, he came to Shinnston and built the stonework for the bridge across the river, which the flood of 1888 swept away.  In England he married Ann Luke, who was the mother of his five children that attained maturity:  William; Margaretta, wife of Dudley Moore; Rebecca Maria, who never married; Frederick; and Annie.  After she (Ann) died, he married Elizabeth Davis (1835-1888), daughter of Dr. Peter and Maria (Billingsley) Davis.  She had been previously married to a Mr. Reynolds by whom she had one child, Lucius, who died in 1875 when he was a little over sixteen years old.  From 1870 to 1888 Elizabeth was the postmistress and maintained the office upstairs in her father's drugstore.  She was a fanatic about getting the mail out on time and kept her clock set up by nearly an hour.  Mr. Delbridge later married for a third time and died in Ohio.

For awhile the house was occupied by Mrs. Eliza Delbridge and her children, according to Frank A. Burnett, Sr., who remembers when they were its occupants.  Eliza (1865-1936) was a daughter of Benjamin Asa and Hannah (Jones) Reeder, and was named for her grandmother, Mrs. Thomas (Eliza Shinn) Reeder, daughter of Rev. Asa Shinn.  She married William Delbridge, the oldest Delbridge child, and they settled in Texas, where he died in 1896.  She then returned to Shinnston.  Later she resided on upper Walnut Street and from there moved to Clarksburg.

Annie (1871-1955), the youngest child and the only one of the children born in this country, married Fred Robey.  A descendant of West Fork Valley pioneers, he was a respected and well-liked citizen who served several terms as mayor.  He was also postmaster for a number of years.  For a time Mr. and Mrs. Robey lived in the old house and then established their residence in the house directly below, a two-story frame dwelling presently owned by their last surviving child, Mrs. Fred (Margaret) Higginbotham.  It, too, belonged to the Delbridge family and had been built, so I have been told, by Bart Clark, one of the town's progressive and ambitious men a century ago.  The other Robey children were: Lynn, remembered as a popular city policeman; Dorothy (Spadafore); and Regina, a beloved teacher in the local grade school.

Frederick Delbridge (1868-1939) eventually became the house's owner.  A resident of Clarksburg for many years, he was a telegrapher and held an important position in the Masonic Lodge.  He willed it to his wife (Bessie Shuttleworth), whose heirs on November 19, 1954, sold it to Richardson Lumber and Construction Company.  Soon thereafter it was razed, and on its site was built the present modern post office.  This, I think, was most fitting, since four of the town's postmasters----Elder Levi Shinn, his son Asa Jonathan, Elizabeth Delbridge, and Fred Robey----has lived in the old house.

From the book, "Ramblings", by Jack Sandy Anderson; Pg. 7:

The first bridge to span the West Fork was built in 1876 and was quite a novelty.  People came from miles around to see it.  it was washed away in the great flood of 1888.

(My notes)  This is the bridge written about in "OTHER DAYS", for which William Delbridge  had done the stone work.

Note #2 for WILLIAM DELBRIDGE:

In April of 2001, my daughter and I went to the Library in St. Clairsville, Ohio.

While she was working on her information, I was browsing the books and came upon one which listed the names of every household in the 1900 Jefferson Co., Ohio Census.  I took this book and began looking through the index of names, and there was a William Delbridge, and his wife, Mary.

I wrote down the names and film number their information was on, and we made plans to go to Steubenville, Ohio in a few days to try and find this family information.

We had no luck looking for his death in the Court House, or the Health Department records.  Jefferson County, Ohio has their death, birth, marriage, etc., records divided in three places; making it very hard to find information.

We left the Health Department and went to the Library to look at Census film, and on the 1900 film, found my William Delbridge.  The birth month and year,  May 1833; and the place of birth were the same.  This William was also a stonecutter.   I had found my 2nd great grandfather!!!

The following is the information from the 1900, 1910 and 1920 Jefferson County Ohio Census:

July 26, 2001:

Jackie and I went to the Court House in Steubenville, Ohio today to try and find the will for William Delbridge.  Unfortunatly, he died intestate, but I did get to read and copy all entries in the appraisement and settlement of his estate.  One item I was glad to find in these papers was a receipt for taking his body to Shinnston, WV for burial.  From these papers, he died with nothing but about $500 in the bank.  His wife, Mary, paid $800 bond and had herself declared the administrator.

We then went to the Library there to search for an obituary, and found the following:

THE WEEKLY GAZETTE, (Steubenville, Jefferson Co., Ohio), Friday, July 10, 1903

WILLIAM DELBRIDGE

William Delbridge, a well known resident of this city, died at his home on South Eighth street, Thursday morning, July 9, 1903, at 8:15 o'clock, aged 70 years.  He was born at St. Agnes, Cornwall, England, and came to this country when a young man and was for many years a foreman of the Panhandle, respected and esteemed by the company and his fellow employes.  Several weeks ago he ran a rusty nail in his foot, which resulted in blood poisoning.  He was taken to the hospital where an operation was performed in the hope that it might bring him relief but the poison had penetrated his system and he entered into rest after great suffering, at his home surrounded by the family circle.  In 1876 (this is incorrect, marriage should have been 1896) he married Mrs. Mary Hannan, of this city, who survives with the following children, Fred W.  (E)., of Clarksburg, W. Va., and Mrs Dudley Moon (Moore), Mrs. Fred Robey and Miss Rebecca, and two step children, Edward and Nellie Hannan.  He was a member of the I. O. O. F. and has many friends in and out of that order, who regret to learn of his sad death, which has terminated a long and useful life.

Note:  The items in parenthesis in the above article, are my corrections to this information.  Also, from information in his Probate Records, his body was taken to Shinnston, WV for burial.

My Note:

His 2nd wife, Elizabeth; is buried in the old Shinn Cemetery, Near the old High School in Shinnston, Harrison Co., WV.  From the listing of people buried there, (online at the Harrison Co., WV GenWeb site); it looks as though there is a stone there for him, but nothing was ever inscribed on it.

The listing from the GenWeb page reads:

Delbridge, Elizabeth, ED; d June 24, 1888; b May 10, 1835, wife, William Delbridge

Delbridge -----------------------(no further information)

I believe this is where he was buried, but so far have not been able to prove this.

The History of West Virginia, Old and New

Published 1923, The American Historical Society, Inc.,

Chicago and New York, Volume III, Pg. 6-7, Harrison County.

FREDERICK ERNEST DELBRIDGE is secretary of the various Masonic bodies in the City of Clarksburg, Harrison County, with official headquarters in the local Masonic Temple.  He was born at Bristol, England, August 2, 1868, and is a son of William and Ann (Luke) Delbridge, who came to the United States when he was a child of three years and who established their home at Weston, Lewis County, West Virginia, whence they later removed to Shinnston, Harrison County.  The son, Frederick E., received his youthful education in the public schools of Shinnston, and as a youth he worked three years as an assistant to his father, a stonecutter by trade and vocation.  He then turned his attention to learning telegraphy, and as a skilled telegraph operator he was employed several years in the Clarksburg office of the Western Union Telegraph Company.  He resigned this post to accept his present position as secretary of the various Masonic organizations in Clarksburg.  The fine Masonic Temple in which he maintains his office was erected in 1913 by the Clarksburg Masonic Building Company, a corporate organization formed by local members of the Masonic fraternity.  Mr. Delbridge has shown marked ability in handling the manifold details of his administrative work, which involves his service as secretary of the following named organizations:  Hennon Lodge No. 7; Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, which was chartered in 1867 under the dispensation of the Grand Lodge of West Virginia, but the original Virginia charter of which was obtained in 1814, its membership in 1921 being 636; Clarksburg Lodge No. 155; Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, which received its charter in 1919 and which now has a membership of 200; Adoniram Chapter No. 11; Royal Arch Masons, with West Virginia charter granted in 1873, but with original charter by the Grand Chapter of Virginia under date of December 15, 1871, its membership in 1921 being 574; Clarksburg Commandery No. 13, Knights Templars, which was chartered May 10, 1900, and which recorded in 1921 a membership of 465.  In the local jurisdiction are also two Scottish Rite bodies that receive similar secretarial service on the part of Mr. Delbridge, these being Mizpah Lodge of Perfection No. 5, chartered October 21, 1913, and having in 1921 an enrollment of 1,087 members; and Clarksburg Chapter No. 5, Knights of the Rose Croix, which, after working two years, received its charter October 20, 1921, its membership being 736.  In addition to the local Masonic Club, of which Mr. Delbridge likewise is secretary, his individual affiliations run the full gamut of both the York and Scottish Rites, in the latter of which he has received the thirty-second degree, besides being a member of Nemisis Temple of the Mystic Shrine in the City of Parkersburg.

He has been a close student of the history and teachings of the time-honored fraternity and finds great satisfaction in his various Masonic affiliations, as well as his administrative service.  He and his wife hold membership in the Presbyterian Church in their home city and are popular in the representative social circles of the community.

Reflection

Into a sea of flaming gold

The sun went down tonight;

I know it did -een though the west

Is hidden from my sight

For through a window facing east

I saw, with happy eyes,

The glory of a dying sun

Reflected in the skies.

Thus when my spirit goes to God,

As it must sime day go,

I pray I'll have, through loving deeds

A rosy afterglow.

Obituary for Sarah "Sallie" DOBBS FULLER

Clearwater Newspaper Friday July 6, 1951

Mrs. Sarah Fuller, 87, who recently broke her shoulder and hip, passed away Thursday night at the Tilden Hospital.  Funeral services were held at the Fairview church on Sunday afternoon at 2:20 and burial was made in the Fairview cemetery.

Services Held Sunday For Mrs. Sarah Ann Fuller At Fairview Church

Sarah Ann Fuller, the last of a family of nine children and a native of Glen Easton, W. Va., was born April 21, 1864, the youngest daughter of Amos and Lovina Hopkins Dobbs.  She departed from this life at the Tilden hospital on June 28, 1951 at the age of 87 years, 2 months and 7 days as the result of a fall the previous week.

At an early age, she gave her heart to Christ and remained a follower all of her live.

She and Albert R. Fuller were united in marriage on June 26, 1882, at the country home of her parents near Glen Easton, W. Va.  They began housekeeping in a log house on her father's farm where their child, their daughter Sidney, was born.

In 1884, this little family moved to a farm near Ashland, Nebr., Mr. Fuller uncle being a doctor there.  Their second child, Elizabeth (Bessie), was born there.  In 1889, they moved to West Plains, Mo., on their farm where their twin sons, Will and Charles were born.

In 1896, when their daughter Ada, was an infant, hey traded their Missouri farm with Harry Trussler for his farm 9 1/2 miles southwest of Clearwater, and they came back to Nebraaska by covered wagon.  This farm remained the family home and is now owned by their son Marvin.  He and his twin sister, Maude, Bryon and Lovina (Babe) were born there.

Her entire life centered around the church which is on the corner of the farm.  Her love for her Saviour and His work permeated through her life and during her active years their home remained an open door to the ministers and evangelists who served at the Fairview Church.

Her sweet disposition and patience has made a lasting impression on all who intimately knew her.

One of her favorite passages of scripture which she often quoted was Eccles. 5:2 "Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter anything before God: for God is heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words e few" - which exemplified her true Christian character.

She leaves to mourn her passing 91 descendants, Her 8 children, Mrs. Sidney Anderson, of Elgin; Mrs. S. W. Gurnsey, of Clearwater; Charles of Elgin; Mrs. Roy Moore, of Bartlett; Marvin, of Clearwater; Mrs. Roy Beeson, of Elgin; Bryon, of Neligh; and Mrs. Donald Moore, of Bartlett, who were all present; 36 grandchildren, 46 great grandchildren and 1 great great grand child.

Mr. Fuller preceded her in death April 4, 1943 and her son Will, on april 24, 1947.

As St. Paul said in his second letter to Timothy, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith; henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord the righteous judge; shall give me at that day; and not to only, but unto all them also that love his appearing."

Two hymns were sung by a mixed quartet consisting of Ronald Burt, who also sang a solo, Mrs. Ralph Walker, of Bartlett, Mrs. Howard Manson, of O'Neill, both are her granddaughters, and Lynn Briggs, of Bartlett, a great grandson, Mrs. Ivan Briggs, of Bartlett also a granddaughter, officiated at the piano.

Pallbearers were sic of her grandson-in-law Howard Manson of O'Neill, Ivan Briggs, and Ralph Walker, of Bartlett; James Weigand, of Clearwater, and Leland Johnson, of Ewing.  The floral tributes were in charge of three grandsons-in-law: Carrol Holz, of Paxton; Harold Jnings, of Bellevue, and James Boothe, of Fremont; also Victor Maben.

Beside the many beautiful floral tributes which have been given, several of the grandchildren have started a fund "In Memoriam of Grandma Fuller," to Nebraska Christian College, at Norfolk.  This fund is to be used for the furthering of the gospel and may be added to at any time.  Also a memorial was given by the Women's Society of Christian Service of the Bartlett Methodist church for their altar fund.

Notes for Thomas S. Reeder:

On January 14, 2000; I received, from Dennis Shinn, three pages with some information on this Reeder family from a book titled: RAMBLINGS, by Jack Sandy Anderson.

On page 27, it states:

Thomas Reeder built two or three houses on the family tract and so far as definitely known was the only son of Benjamin.  He was a very eccentric gentleman and many stories have come down about him.  He married Eliza Shinn whose father was the famous Rev. Asa Shinn.  However, some old Reeder records tell us that Thomas had one brother who went West and another who made his appearance here after Benjamin's death.  Not much is known of the religious affiliation of the Reeders, but some of the older residents remembered that a Catholic priest came to Thomas and administered the last rites of that Church to him before he died.

Benjamin Asa Reeder (commonly known as Benny Reeder) married Hannah Jones and they set up house-keeping in the old house on the John F. Sturm farm where L. R. Sturm now lives.

Other children of Thomas Reeder were:  C. A. Reeder, a Union soldier and a justice of the peace, (this C. A. is Charles A. Reeder; he received the Medal of Honor for capturing an enemy flag in the Civil War), he married a daughter of Justice Jarrett; and Woolman Reeder who died at Sandy Hook, near Harper's Ferry, during the Civil War.

The 1810 Monongalia Co., VA census was signed on the last page by Benjamin Reeder, Assistant Marshall.  Even though he signed it, Benjamin is not listed in this census.

Notes for Eliza S. Shinn:

Her birthdate is taken from the Civil War Pension file of her deceased son, Woolman T. Reeder.

Note #1 for Thomas & Eliza Shinn Reeder:

In the Civil War Pension File of their son, Woolman T. Reeder, it states:

The Marriage Record of Thomas S. Reeder & Eliza S. Shinn states they were married on the 25th of September 1832 in the home of John S. Barnes, Sr.; and were married by the Rev. Levi Shinn, a Minister of the Gospel.

This information was stated by N. (Novol) T. Barnes and Drusilla T. Jackson, also by A. (Alpeus) W. Shinn, Justice for Clay Township in the county of Harrison.

Notes for (William) Henry Dobbs:

According to family stories passed down through the years, William Henry Dobbs came from Ireland in 1830.  Henry, as I have always seen written, and his two sisters Rhoda and Emily, sailed together.  He described his sister Rhoda, as a tall slender girl with an abundance of long black hair, dark blue eyes, and not strong in body.  Emily, he described as stoutly built, strong and healthy, light blue eyes, and a dark golden brown fluffy head of hair.

After being on the ship for several days, there was a breakout of smallpox.  Rhoda and Henry both were supposed to have contracted it, and in less than 21 days she died.  The story goes on to say that they kept Rhoda's body on the ship until sharks began to follow it, they then buried her at sea.  Our (William) Henry survived, but was left blind.

Family stories tell of him walking along the creek gathering twigs, he would gather an armful, lay them in a pile, then continue until he had several piles gathered up.  He would then go back, picking up all these stacks of twigs, which he would then make baskets to sell.

Emily was supposed to have married John M. Harris of Glen Easten, WV, who owned and operated a flour milling business.

Shinnston and Fairmont.

The Reeder Cemetery lies a short distance from the brick house in which lived John and Lydia Long.

Benjamin Reeder and his father Simon were early settlers in Enterprise and owned vast tracts of land along the river below Laurel Run.  They built a home where the John Long homestead now stands.  The Reeders had originally come from Alexandria, Va., and Benjamin had for a time been a revenue collector at Morgantown, then but a small settlement.  There was a daughter (Nancy, a widow whose married name was Patton.  She came with her family to Enterprise.  At different times Benjamin took land patents until at one time he owned all the land from the river back to the Coon holdings and to the head of Laurel Run.

The Reeders belonged to the aristocracy of the Old Dominion.  They brought with them many fine heirlooms such as silver plate; and they owned several slaves that had been brought from Eastern Virginia.  They owned the Black Granny family.

The Patton children---grandchildren of Benjamin Reeder--were George; Elisha; and Benjamin who was perhaps Enterprise's first merchant; Mary; Nancy; and Sophia.  The last named married George Long and is remembered by many as Aunt Sofe Long.  She lived in a large brick house, still standing, on the road that connects Enterprise with Bethlehem.

Note:

The daughter who married the Patton was Ann Clifton Reeder.  She and her children are listed in this family tree.

Note #2 for Benjamin Reeder:

The 1840 Harrison Co., VA census shows Benjamin Reeder (Jr.), head of family in which there was one male member between 80 and 90 years of age.  This would suggest Benjamin's date of birth between 1750 and 1760.

Justice of the Peace in Mongolia (Monongalia ?) Co. in 1803 and 1805.

On November 3, 1841, Benjamin Reeder made out his will in his own hand, adding codicils on April 24 and Sept. 14, 1842.  This will was written by a man around 85.

Will of Benjamin Franklin Reeder

Being very feeble but of sound good health, I make the following disposition of my worldly affairs.  I give to my grandchildren, Mary Seymore Patton, Sophia Patton, Benjamin R. Patton and Elisha Patton (having given George R. Patton two tracts of land,) one in Randolph and one in Harrison County, which he sold) all my household furniture, plantation utensils and stock of every kind, and negroes Cintha, Joseph and James.  The land in Randolph which Thomas S. Reeder has in trust for said children, I desire be sold to Henry Watson to pay one hundred and eighty dollars I owe him.  I also desire that the wagon and as many horses as can be spared may be sole to pay one hundred and fifty dollars I owe Judge Duncan.  I am endorsee with Wm. A. Samy (Sams ?) and Thomas S. Reeder for George R. Patton for three hundred dollars in the Morgantown Bank, those endorsers have notes on Samuel Walker for about one hundred and ninety dollars and timber on the bank of the river to cover the note, but if the note is not covered, I desire my executor to pay his portion of the balance.  I also desire if it shall be deemed best that the saw mill and the land attached on the Laurel Run should be sold to pay Judge E. S. Duncan, or that B. R. Patton may hire him the negro boy James to pay the same, and if upon the tryal of Mr. Duncan and the boy, should both be satisfied, the boy may be sold to him.

If the arrangement can be made I desire B. R. Patton to assume my just debts for store or tradesmen's accounts and save the trouble of an administrator, by selling any of the property above mentioned to be sold.

I further desire that Mary Seymore Patton shall have the house I built on the land of the Laurel Run during her life with fifteen or twenty acres of land as she may chuse and the negro boy Joseph.

Commending my soul to the great and good Being who gave it, I appoint my grandson B. R. Patton to see my wishes and will here expressed be executed, taking advise from his uncles Thomas E. Reeder and Henry Watson.  I earnestly pray that harmony and concord may subsist with my children and grandchildren.  This can be best attained by being attentive to home and kind and courtious to all persons and having little to do with any person's business but their own.  I desire to be buried in the most plan unostentatious manner in a plain poplar coffin.

In testimony I have hereunto set my hand and seal the third day of November 1841.

                                                 B. Reeder (seal)

1st Codicil.  Very infirm from recent injury and desirous that my wordly affairs should be settled without delay, if I do not recover to attend to that matter myself, I desire that the black boy James may choose a master and be sold.  Judge Duncan would like to own him, and I think would make a good master.  Therefore B. R. Patton with advice by my wishes here expressed will be governed accordingly, and likewise sell the wagon and horses, keeping only two horses and also the saw mill, if any like its value can be had, and lay out any surplus money in making meadow and improving land and take my last advise, be kind to all, intimate with few, keep little company, and look well to business at home, and again I implore this my last injuction may not only be never forgotton by those I leave, but strictly observed and you will soon find benefit.

                                                B. Reeder, 24th April 1842

2nd Codicil.  Upon mature deliberation and reflection I believe it would be best that Benjamin R. Patton should have the entire control of the house I have built on their land, and all my other property for the joint benefit of himself and sisters that he should protect them and give them all reasonable support, that shares of the land should be purchased by one from another as they or can agree, or divided in an equitable manner among them or by mutual consent sold and an equitable distribution made and such is to be taken and considered my will.

                                                 B. Reeder, 24th Sept. 1842

Harris County Court, February 21st, 1843

A writing purporting to be the last will and testament of Benjamin Reeder was produced in court and offered for probate, there being no subscribing witnesses thereto.  Edwin S. Duncan and William A. Harrison were sworn and severally deposed that they are well acquainted with the testator's hand writing and verily believe that the hand writing and the two codicils thereon endorsed and the names thereto subscribed to be wholly written by the testator's own hand.  Whereupon the said will and codicils are ordered to be recorded as the true and last will and testament of the said Benjamin Reeder.

Children of Benjamin Reeder and Eleanor Slaughter are:

            i.    Ann Clifton "Nancy" Reeder, born Abt. 1787 in Alexandria, VA; died Unknown in ?; married Robert Patton, Jr. 02 Sep 1805 in Alexandria, VA; born Abt. 1774 in Alexandria, VA; died Unknown in ?.

Notes for Robert Patton, Jr.:

Robert Patton, Jr. was a member of the Alexandria-Washington Masonic Lodge #22, Alexandria, Fairfax Co., VA, from 1799-1819 when he was suspended for non-payment of dues.  The lodge returns show this information.  There are no surviving returns from this Lodge before 1799.  Robert attended George Washington's funeral in 1799 - while at the funeral, he wore a watch fob that had been passed down and continues to be passed down in the Patton family since 50 years before the Revolutionary War.

A William Patton, Jr., petitioned for membership in the Lodge on September 11, 1811.  This William served as Secretary in 1803 and Worshipful Master from December 1813 - December 27, 1815.  William is listed under deaths on the 1817 lodge return.  Information was found on William Patton, Jr. in the History of Alexandria Lodge No. 22 by F. L. Brockett and the lodge returns.

The above information was stated in a letter dated November 5, 1999, from Mrs. Marie M. Barnett, Librarian, Allen E. Roberts Masonic Library and Museum of Virginia, Inc.

This William Patton, Jr. was possibly a relative of Robert Patton, Jr., along with a John B. Patton who was a member of this Lodge during the same time period.

Robert Patton, Jr. is shown in the 45 and over age bracket in the 1820 Fairfax, VA census.

Robert Patton, Jr. and Ann Clifton Reeder were married at Clifton Lodge, the residence of his brother and wife, James Patton and Mary Ann Seymour Slaughter.

Notes for (Rev.) Asa Shinn:

               Two Shinn Thealogians

               (Written in March 1974)

Two members of the Shinn family that settled Shinnston attained eminence in the world of religion and

were theologians of national stature.  These two were Asa Shinn and Quillen Hamilton Shinn.

Asa was born May 3, 1781.  According to a history of the Shinn family written by Josiah H. Shinn and

published in 1903, he was born in New Jersey.  However, Glenn D. Lough, a noted Fairmont historian and a descendant of Asa's brother, Elder Levi Shinn (1779-1856), believes that both Asa and Elder Levi were born in present West Virginia.  Asa's mother, Mary (Clark) Shinn, died before January 17, 1788, for on that date, in Harrison County, Asa's father, Jonathan Shinn, married his second wife, Mrs. Sarah (Parks) Edwards, widow of David Edwards, who had been killed by Indians in 1778.

Jonathan Shinn had been born and reared a Quaker, but in the West Fork Valley he and his family embraced Methodism.  So, as a child, Asa became a Methodist.  By the time he was fifteen he had become a class leader and soon thereafter began to preach.  When he was eighteen the Baltimore Conference named him a circuit-riding preacher in the Monongahela Valley.  Through the years his ministry caused him to travel extensively, and his fame as a preacher of outstanding ability attracted the attention of his superiors.  In 1822 he was made presiding elder of the Pittsburgh District.  Several years later, in 1829, he and other prominent leaders withdrew from the Methodist Episcopal Church and founded the Methodist Protestant Church in which he held the highest rank.  Asa was the author of various religious works, including The Benevolence and Rectitude of the Supreme Being.  Unfortunately, his last years were plagued with debilitating illness, and he died at Battleboro, Vermont, on February 11, 1853.

Asa and his brother, Elder Levi Shinn, also a minister and with whom he maintained a close relationship until his death, in 1815 laid off the lots and streets that comprised early Shinnston.  For a time Asa combined teaching with preaching, for history accords him the distinction of teaching Shinnston's first school in 1813.  A year later, in 1814, he built a house on Walnut Street that stood until 1954; its site is now part of the Harmer Funeral Home parking lot.

Asa was twice married.  On March 3, 1807 he married Phoebe Barnes, daughter of Thomas and Sarah (Scott) Barnes; her sister Sarah married William Willey, Jr., and was the mother of United States Senator Waitman Thomas Willey.  After her death Asa married Mary Bennington Wrenshall Gibson, widow of Woolman Givson and daughter of Rev. John and Mary (Bennington) Wrenshall, her sister, Ellen Bray Wrenshall, married Frederick Dent and was the mother of Julia Dent, wife of President Ulysses S. Grant.

Asa Shinn had four children by his first wife:  William M., married Henrietta Cothoun; James, died young; Eliza, married Thomas Reeder; and Mary, died young.  By his second wife he had but one child, Thornton Asa Shinn, who married Sarah P. Rabe.  Among Asa's descendants living today is Benjamin Garnet Reeder, a prominent attorney.

From the book, "HISTORY OF THE SHINN FAMILY IN EUROPE AND AMERICA", Page 206:

For those who desire to know more of Rev. Asa Shinn, I refer them to a "History of the Methodist Protestant Church," by Rev. D. J. Drinkhouse, which, I am assured by Dr. F. T. Tagg, editor of the "Methodist Protestant," is, after the biography written by his son, the best work upon the life and works of Asa Shinn.  (See also Van Lam's "History of Perry County, Ohio," ; Smueler's "Historical Sketches of Licking County, Ohio,"; Minutes of the Monongahela (Ohio), Baltimore and Pittsburg Conferences of the M. Notes for Jonathan Shinn:

Taken from "Hardesty's 1882 Biographical Atlas of Harrison County, WV:

Clay District.

This district is covered with low hills, having gradual slopes and a fine blue grass soil.  Limestone is found in veins from five to seven feet thick, and a five foot vein of iron ore underlies the whole district.  An excellent quality of coal is found in veins, seven, eleven, and thirteen feet thick, and there is no gravel beds in the district.  Valuable white sand exists in some parts, and a fine quality of petters clay supplies the Shinnston pottery with a material for manufacture.

A branch of Booths creek heads in the southwestern part of the district, flows northward, and empties into the Main creek where Taylor, Harrison and Marion Counties join.  Sugar Camp run heads in the eastern part of the district, and flows west into Booths creek.  Coons run heads in the southwest, flows northeast, and empties into West Fork river.  Homers run and Shinns run are other small streams in the district.

Early Settlers.

The first actual settlers in the district were Clement, Jonathan and Levi Shinn, three brothers, who  came in 1775 and located on Booths creek, afterward removing to where the village of Shinnston now stands, which was laid out and named by them.

      288.  Benjamin Reeder, Jr., born 1699 in St. Mary's Co., MD; died 1769 in Charles Co., MD.  He was the son of 576. Benjamin Reeder and 577. Elizabeth Attaway.  He married 289. Margaret Robbins Abt. 1720 in Charles Co., MD.

      289.  Margaret Robbins, born 1698 in Charles Co., MD; died 1795 in Charles Co., MD.  She was the daughter of 578. Richard Robbins and 579. Lydia Shuttlesworth.

Notes for Benjamin Reeder:

They were living on a tract of land called Lindsay when he made his will on 6/24/1764.

Benjamin left Lindsay to his son Richard Robbins Reeder; his widow Margaret to have two-thirds of it during her lifetime.  Benjamin Reeder's will was offered for probate on 5/9/1769.  Final distribution gave the residue of the estate to the widow and after her decease to her six daughters.  (There were only five in the will, no explanation for the discrepancy.)

Wills, 37:113, Bal. of Final Distr., L:104

When Benjamin's brother, Simon, died in 1754, he left the bulk of his estate to Benjamin's son Simon.  Benjamin himself was left one shilling and was named executor of his brother's will.

Notes for Margaret Robbins Reeder:

When Margaret Robbins Reeder, the widow, made her own will on April 24, 1789, at age 91, she left to her son Richard Robbins Reeder all of her property, including the land called Lindsay, where he was living.

Her will was offered for probate October 12, 1795 (Wills, AK 11:290)

Genetta Reeder Hames says Margaret Robbins was born in 1702...However, if she was 91 in 1789 this would make her born in 1698.

Taken from the book,  "HISTORY OF THE SHINN FAMILY IN EUROPE AND AMERICA", by Josiah H. Shinn, A. M.

Page 133:

Levi Shinn lived and died near Shinnston, W. Va.  He married in New Jersey, and several of his children were born in that State.  He was born in 1748, and married Elizabeth Smith in 1772.  He was a Virginia pioneer, and suffered the usual hardships.  He is buried near Shinnston, and his descendants point out his grave.

Note #2 for Levi Shinn:

From the book "A History of the City of Shinnston", by Lena E. Poling:

Pg's. 5; 8; & 9:

Details about Shinnston's original settlement are vague and even contradictory, but the best available evidence indicates that members of the Shinn family were in the West Fork Valley as early as 1772.  There is a tradition that the brothers Clement, Levi, and Johathan were here in 1770 or 1771 and lived for a time with relatives ( the Edwards and Owens families) in the Booths Creed area.

In 1772 Jonathan settled on Mudlick Run for a while then sold his claim to his twin brother, David.  Soon thereafter, David returned to New Jersey and enlisted in the army at the time of the American Revolution.  Years later he once again came to what is now West Virginia and settled in Hampshire County, where he resided until his death in 1815.

There is also a tradition that the Shinn brothers on their first trip to the West Fork Valley built a crude log cabin on the brow of the hill at the head of Mahlon Street, not far from the brick residence of the late Mrs. Esther Lowe Hoffman.

In any case, no permanent settlement was established until several years later when Levi and his family and others came here from Frederick County, Virginia, where they had been living.  It is known that by 1778 Levi's log house had been erected.   We can assume that by then the Shinns were busy at work clearing their land and struggling for survival in a rich but often hostile wilderness.

The log house Levi built during the time of the Revolution represents a somewhat pretentious type of pioneer dwelling in that it is fairly large, two-storied, and shows evidence of having been planned with a good deal of care.  Once surrounded by extensive acreage, is is now engulfed by suburban housing developments.  Several years ago the Harrison County Historical Society placed a marker beside this old house which was inscribed:  "Levi Shinn House - Built 1778, by Levi Shinn who came from New Jersey, 1773 and claimed tomahawk rights.  Returned with family and brothers, Clement and Jonathan, and settled.  Sold part of land to Jonathan whose son, Levi, deeded it for the site of Shinnston.

In the 1840's the Shinn family sold the house to David Morris whose descendants owned it until 1959 when it was purchased by the Richardson Lumber and Construction Company.  In the fall of 1972, the company presented the house as a gift to the Shinnston Historical Association.  In April 1973 the West Virginia Antiquities Commission and the Governor's Board of Review approved the house for listing with the National Register of Historic Places, the only Harrison County site thus far so honored.

Generation No. 11

1152.  Simon Reeder, born 1641 in Bedworth, Warwickshare Co., England; died 17 Jul 1685 in St. Mary's Co., MD.  He was the son of 2304. Thomas Reeder and 2305. Mrs. Thomas Reeder (1).  He married 1153. Virtue Vowles 1664 in St. Mary's Co., MD.

1153.  Virtue Vowles, born 1642 in St. Mary's Co., MD; died Aft. 17 Jun 1685 in Poss., MD.  She was the daughter of 2306. John Vowles and 2307. ? Scott.

Notes for Simon Reeder:

(From L. Roberts)

A family tree diagramming "Ancestors of the children of William O. and Harriet Bull Reeder" filed in the St. Mary's County Historical Library in Leonardstown, MD gives 1635 as the birth year.  Possibly Bedworth, Warwickshire, England.  He died on 6 Apr. 1685 in St. Mary's Co., MD.  (Jane Reeder's research gives a death date of 17 June 1685).  This is possibly one of two Simon Reeders listed in church parish records records in Bedworth, Warwickshire, England.  Bedworth is about six miles north of Coventry and near Stratford-on-Avon.

Simon is believed to have come to Maryland in 1665, same year he and Virtue Vowles got married, according to "The Ancestry of the Descendants of Thomas Attaway Reeder of St. Mary's Co., MD", by William C. Parson, 314 Cherry Lane, Wynnewood, PA  19096, published 1979.  Found in the St. Mary's County Historical Library, Leonardtown, MD.

There is a POSSIBILITY that the Reeders went from England to Long Island, NY, to New Jersey and then to MD.  This may have been a different group of Reeders as the name was found in England in several locales, including Norfolk.

Notes for VIRTUE VOWLES:

Little is known about Virtue Vowles other than she MAY have had a brother named Richard Vowles who bought property with the Reeders, according to "The Ancestry to the Descendants of Thomas Attaway Reeder of St. Mary's County, MD", by William C. Parsons, 314 Cherry Lane, Wynnewood, PA 19096.  Published 1979 and found in the St. Mary's County Historical Society Library, Leonardtown, MD.  Some researchers have speculated that her father was John Vowles and her mother was a Scott.  It is noted the name Vowles has many variant spellings (7 or more) in the St. Mary's County area Probate/Wills files.  The only place her name is seen is in Simon's will.  No Vowles will or documentation has been found that mentions her name as a Vowles or a variant spelling.

This has always been an assumed fact among Reeder researchers but is not specifically proven.

Notes for Thomas Greene, Gov.:

Pr:  The Maryland Semmes and Kindred Families I quote and paraphrase:

"Thomas Greene, one of the "twenty gentlemen of very good fashion", who sailed with Lord Calvert's Ark and the Dove, was the second Provincial Governor of Maryland and Lord of Bobing Manor, Isle of Wight, MD., was one of the most interesting characters of early Maryland and one whose history has been quite negledted.  He had invested in the adventure to a minor extent, so consequently his success was of more than casual interest.  He was always styled by Governor Leonard Calvert "my well beloved friend", but the tradition that he was a kinsman of Leonard Calvert has not been proved and the oft repeated statement that he married Helen, a daughter of George, Lord Baltimore, is merely a myth of genealogy.  His brother, Robert Greene, Esq., emigrated to Maryland but being the son and heir to the parental estates in England he returned to the mother country but before departing he assigned his land rights to his brother, Thomas.

Nov. 22, 1633 "ther sails were spread on the Ark and the Dove on that early morning they left from Cowes on the Isle of Wight, England.  In the service of Thomas Greene, was an indentured servant by the name of Thomas Cooper.  It is generally believed that this Thomas Cooper is our forefather, the grandfather of Nathaniel Cooper, Sr., born 1673.  It is also known that Thomas Greene, Esq. is the ggggrandfather of Sarah Green who married Philip Cooper in 1798.  Philip and Sarah Cooper are the gggrandparents of Raymond Eugene Cooper.
