David was baptised at the Jersey Church, Ursina, Somerset County, PA.

He resided in Springfield Twp., Fayette County, PA; moved back to Lower Turkeyfoot Twp., Somerset County, PA,; moved to Ohio in 1825; moved to Marshall County, VA (WV); and moved with son, Willets to McConnelsville, Morgan County, OH in 1840.  His first wife, Mary Skinner Rush, died in 1830.  She is buried at Blairs Ridge Cemetery, Marshall County, WV.  He remarried  widow, Mary Messecher.  He died in Morgan County, OH and is buried in the Lebonon M.E. Church Yard on Willet's farm.  (The church is gone. G. Chambers 9/9/2002)

Harry Speer Rush was the grandson of Willis (Willets) Rush.

Notes from Harry S. Rush(1943):

"In the Census of 1800 David Rush, his wife and one son are listed in Saltlick Twp., Fayette Co., PA. In the same Census are listed six Rush families in this township: Peter, George Peter, Nathaniel, David and Henry. David and Nathaniel are brothers. The second Peter Rush family shown had enough children to account for the known brothers and sisters of David and Nathaniel (Note: Peter was an uncle of David Rush - G. Chambers). In the Census of 1810 David Rush is still listed in Saltlick Twp., Fayette Co., with two sons and four daughters. His brother, William, appears for the first time with his wife and one son. Peter Rush has disappeared and Nathaniel is known to have known to have moved to Ohio. In the Census of 1820 David is listed in Lower Turkeyfoot Twp., Somerset Co., PA. In the Census of 1800 Reuben Skinner, Sr., and his sons, Reuben, Jr., Samuel, Nathaniel and James are all listed adjacent to the Rush Families in Saltlick Township.  Reuben Skinner, Sr., is known to have lived at Skinner's Mill Run, now known as Mill Run. It is very likely that the Rush families lived near that place. Mill Run is some ten or a dozen miles from the Jersey Baptist Church in Somerset Co., and these families were members of the church and the church organization some times met at Skinner's Mill.   Connellsville is approximately an equally great distance in the opposite direction from Mill Run.   Descendants of some of the brothers of David say that the Rush Family came from the vicinity of Connellsville, PA.   David Rush was born June 14, 1780.  He died at the home farm of his son, Willis, Bristol, east of MeConnellsville, Morgan County, Ohio, May 28, 1852, and is buried in the Lebanon Methodist Churchyard, which is located on the corner of the farm. The stone over his grave reads:

= DAVID RUSH

= died

= May 28, 1852

= Aged 71 yrs., 11 mos. 14 ds.

=====

His wife, Mary Skinner, was born July 4, 1776, the daughter of Robert and his wife Mary (probably Willetts).   Several years before 1800 Robert Skinner had a farm on Turkeyfoot Road three or four miles northwest of the Jersey Baptist Church. Later Robert Skinner seems to have inherited the farm of his father, which was located across the road from the Jersey Baptist Church. His parents Nathaniel Skinner, Sr. and wife, Elizabeth, are buried in the Jersey Baptist Churchyard. Robert is probably also buried there, but there is no stone at present. to mark his grave. The estate of Robert Skinner was entered in the Court Records of Somerset Co., PA, August 25, 1823.   His wife, Mary, and the following children are named in the estate papers: John, Willetts, Courtland, Frances, who intermarried with Burgett Minor, Mary, who intermarried with David Rush, Elizabeth, who intermarried with John Colbourne, Saly, who intermarried with John Small.    In the papers are two receipts signed by David Rush and a note signed by Robert Skinner in favor of his son, John. He spelled his name with one "n".   Mary Skinner Rush died October 17, 1830 and is buried in the Blair's Ridge Churchyard near Pleasant Valley, east of Moundsville, WV. The stone reads as shown above. She was originally buried in a private cemetery on the Blair farm, but about 1883 her son, Willis, had her body moved to the churchyard, which adjoins the farm. The Minute book of the Jersey Baptist Church shows that Mary Skinner was received into the church July 21, 1799 and that David Rush "gave in his experience and was baptised" August 4, 1804. David Rush is mentioned several times in later years. The final record is June 25, 1825, "Brother and sister David Rush and his wife, Mary, applied for a letter of Dismission. We grant their request and order the Clerke to prepair the Same." This is probably the time when they left Somerset County, PA.   Harvey Rush, grandson of Robert Rush, said he remembered hearing his grandfather tell that they stopped on Hart's Run in Greene Co., PA. The boys built a corral and kept fires burning at night to keep wolves away from the few sheep which they took with them. He also said that they first went somewhere in Ohio and them came back to West Virginia. They were accompanied by a man named Hinerman and by George Lutes or Lutz.   About 1840, David, Willis(Willets) and Ralph Rush moved to a farm east of McConnellsville, Morgan Co., Ohio.   In West

Virginia, David Rush married a second time, a Mrs. Mary Messecher. David's name is involved several times in land transactions in Marshall Co., WV, covering land formerly owned by Nicholas Massecher. It seems very likely that his second wife was the widow of Nicholas Messecher.    Both David Rush and his son Willis, owned land in Marshall Co., WV, about 8 miles east of Moundsville.  In Ohio as remembered by Sylvester Colborn Rush the second wife, Mary, was a hysterical invalid in bed. She wore David out waiting on her and after David developed asthma, they were both moved to the farm home of Willis Rush and he waited on her until the death of David.   Her son was sent for and took her to his home where she later died.

The Rush Family were originally Baptists, but the Boden family were Methodist, and the Willis Rush Family were afterward Methodists. The Lebanon Methodist Church is on one corner of the old Willis Rush farm east of McConnellsville, OH.   David Rush was a blacksmith as were sons Robert & Willis."

He married (1) Mary SKINNER about 1797 at Salt Lick, Fayette, PA. She was born 4 July 1776 at Lower Turkeyfoot,  Somerset, PA. She was the daughter of Robert SKINNER and Mary WILLITS. Mary died 17 October 1830 at Marshall County, VA (WV), at the age of 54.   Another birth year is given as 1766, however, in 1766, her father would be younger than 13. Harry Speer Rush in a 1935 letter says she is buried in Blair's Ridge Churchyard east of Moundsville, West Virginia.

They had 9 children.   David married (2) Mary MESSECHER, wife of Nicholas MESSECHER.

Notes for Robert Rush:

Gary Chambers: Cemetery Photo Project

Robert's and Sarah's graves are not marked at Slonaker.  I did not see them.  Dorothy Hennen did not note them in her book "Cemetery Records of Greene County", 1976.  Harry Speer Rush states in his 1943 book that Robert and Sarah were buried at Slonaker Cemetery and the stones were missing in 1943.   He had interviewed Harvey Rush, grandson.  The Rush Farm borders Slonaker Cemetery on the east (Caldwell Atlas, 1876).  You travel west toward Cameron, but the land is east because of the crooked roads.    It is the present day Lough Farm.

July 03, 1836 in Marshall County, WV (Source: Rush Family File, Date of Import: Aug 4, 1999.), daughter of James Boden and Catharine Page.  She was born February 27, 1816 in Moundsville, Marshall County, WV (Source: Rush Family File, Date of Import: Aug 4, 1999.), and died November 15, 1897 in Colfax, Jasper County, IA (Source: Rush Family File, Date of Import: Aug 4, 1999.).

Notes for blacksmith Willetts Rush:

He is called both Willetts and Willis. His birth year and place are from a 1935 letter by Harry Speer Rush.

= = = =

Willis Rush was born in what was then Saltlick Twp. (now Springfield Twp.) Fayette Co., PA, probably near the present Mill Run, and died at Ainsworth, Washington Co., Iowa, and is buried at Ainsworth. His wife was born at Moundsville, WV, the daughter of JAMES BODEN and his wife CATHERINE PAGE. Mrs. Rush died at the home of her daughter, ELLA at Colfax, Iowa and is buried beside her husband at Ainsworth, Iowa. Willis moved with his father from Fayette County to Lower Turkeyfoot, Somerset Co., PA, and with his father to Limestone, Marshall Co., WV about 1825.  About 1840 they moved to Morgan Co., Ohio. On July 3, 1836 in WV he married MARY ANN BODEN. Her father was of English descent and her mother of English and German descent. Willis Rush lived at Limestone, West Virginia a small

country community on the Wheeling-Waynesburg Rd. In Ohio they settled on a farm just east of the Lebanon Methodist church some seven or eight miles east of McConnellsville, Morgan Co., Ohio. The Lebanon church is located on one corner of the farm. His younger brother Ralph (Uncle Rafe) lived with them. His father and his second wife, Mrs. Mary Messecher, also moved to Ohio and David died at the home of Willis May 28, 1852. Catherine Page Boden the mother-in-law of Willis Rush died at his home December 29, 1845. The family moved ro Washington Co., Iowa during the Civil War and settled on a farm in Oregon Twp. near Ainsworth. About 1885 Willis and his wife moved into the village or Ainsworth where he later died. After the death of Willis, his son, Sylvester and his family returned to

Ainsworth and lived with the mother. Later she went to live with her daughter, Ella, who was the wife of a Methodist minister, Rev. Wm. E. Patterson. Mrs. Rush smoked a clay pipe for years as had been the custom in Virginia, but when she went to live with her daughter, Ella, she decided that it didn't look well for an old lady to be sitting in the minister's house smoking. She quit and did not smoke the rest of her life. After the death of Mr. Patterson she and her daughter, Ella, moved to Colfax, Iowa where Mrs. Rush died. Willis Rush was a blacksmith until past forty years of age and then followed farming the rest of his life. There is a biography of Willis Rush in a History of Washington County, Iowa. (I

note several errors and omissions in this biography H.S.R.)

                           * FIRST SETTLEMENTS.

     Peter Crow settled, where his son Samuel now lives, one mile east

of Limestone, in the year 1796.  Peter Crow was a spy employed by

the government.  He was born in 1763, and died in 1826.

     Robert Martin came from Pennsylvania, in 1819, and built a mill

on  Steele's run.  He had a large family of children, and some of them

are still living in Marshall county.  John Martin is living on the old

place.

     George Beeler was the first settler in the central part of Webster

district.  He located where Andrew and James Wilson lives.  He came

in 1784.

     The Blair's emigrated from Maryland, and settled on what is called

Blair's Ridge, in 1824.

    * JOHN MARTIN, farmer, was born in Greene county, Pa., August

3, 1805, and came with his parents to Marshall county, locating near

where John now lives.  Robert S. Martin, our subject's father, had a

family of nine children, John being the seventh child and fourth son.

John learned the trade of millwright, and followed that until twenty-

nine years of age, when he married Miss Mary Rush, in 1834.  He then

set out to clear land and make a home for himself and wife.  He first

cut logs and built a cabin, and then began clearing the land.  The first

year he cleared five acres and planted the land in corn, and the following

winter he put that in wheat, and cleared five acres more.  In this manner

he continued until his land was cleared.

Notes for Sylvester Colborn Rush:

Sylvester Colborn Rush was born at Limestone, Marshall Co., WV Nov. 10, 1838. About 1840 he moved to Morgan Co., Ohio with his parents and grew to manhood there. He attended Sharon College located not far from the home farm. About the time of the Civil War he went to Lawrence Co., Ohio, where his aunt Catherine McConnell lived, to teach school, but contracted typhoid fever and did not recover his health for a considerable time. During the 60's he moved with his parents to Washington Co., IA. He worked on the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad across Nebraska in 1866. For a number of years he worked as a building carpenter for the Milwaukee and the Rock Island Railways in Iowa, and in Minnesota for what is now the Great Northern Railway, as far west as Wilmar. He was married at New Concord, Ohio Nov. 14, 1883 to JANE SCOTT SPEER, daughter of Robert Speer and Mar Hughes McDonald, who in the 60's had lived in Washington Co. Iowa for a number of years. For a short time after his marriage he was in the grain business with J.W. Nichols at Fairfield, Iowa. He and his brother Simeon were partners in a lumber and grain business at Arion, Iowa, where David died in 1893. Sylvester moved to Colfax, Iowa in the fall of 1893 and at various times was engaged in the grain, lumber, hardware and furniture business. For a short time about 1901 he was in the lumber and hardware business with W. Craig Jackson at Plessis, Iowa, but his family did not move to Plessis. In 1909 he moved to Ames, Iowa where his daughter Gladys was attending Iowa State College. He continued to live there until his death at the home of his daughter on Easter Sunday, Apr. 20, 1930 at 4:00 p.m. past ninety-one yrs. of age. Although he was feeble during the last 2 years of his life he retained a very active and clear mind up to the very end of life.  Mrs. Rush was born at the farm home of her parents in Guernsey Co., OH about 4 miles east of New Concord, Ohio. She died at Colfax, Iowa Feb. 18, 1905. They were both buried at Colfax.

Notes for Lewis E. Antill:

Lewis Antill ran the Antill Lumber Company located below his home on High Street, Cameron, WV.   The business was passed on to Perry and Fred Antill.  They closed it on their retirement.

Lewis was an aggressive in business and real estate owning two lumber and materials stores (Cameron, WV and Rogersville, PA).

My grandmother (Eva) said the family moved many times including a farm on Short Creek, Ohio County, WV.

ANTILL LUMBER COMPANY-Lewis Antill and Son began the lumber business in Cameron in February, 1922. Since that date the business has grown until it is now one of the leading industries in the city. A fine three-story brick building was erected in 1927 by this company. Part of the main floor is used for an office and the rest of this floor, as well as the other two floors, are used for the display of the large stock which the company carries.  History of Cameron, WV by Plantz, Riggs, et al circa 1929.

Lewis lived in Aleppo when Eva Antill was born in 1889 (property now owned by John Whipkey).  After his father, Asberry died in 1909, he moved the family to a farm on Windsor Heights near Short Creek, Ohio County, WV.   He moved back to Greene County and lived in a house near the Asbury K. Antill farm, also.  This was later owned by Charles Tedrow,  He moved finally to Cameron on High Street and died there in 1945.

From History of Greene County p. 847-848, by Bates (1888): P.J. WHITE, Merchant, Ryerson's Station, Penn., was born in Aleppo Township, August 4, 1850. His parents, J. M. and Rebecca (HEWITT) WHITE were natives of Greene County, and of Dutch and English extraction. His father is a farmer and justice of the peace, and now resides on a farm in Aleppo Township. The subject of this sketch is the only member of the father's family now living. He was reared on the farm, attended the select schools and engaged in farming until 1879, when he embarked in the mercantile trade for two years at Hart's Run, in Aleppo Township. He then located at New Freeport, and carried on a general store until 1883, when he removed to his present location and established the business in which he is meeting with great success. Mr. WHITE was united in marriage in this county in 1872, with Miss Margaret Ann, daughter of W.J. MOORE. Mrs. WHITE is of English and Irish lineage. Their children are Mary Rebecca and Hannah E. In politics, Mr. WHITE is a Democrat, and was appointed to his present position of postmaster at Ryerson's Station in 1885.

Mary married Edward BEABOUT, Hannah Elizabeth had an out of wedlock child with Julian Cameron LYON and later married Norman GUTHRIE and had two sons with him.  Perry and Margaret also had a daughter, Nellie B. born in 1888-no information on her.
