OBITUARY:
Mrs. Elizabeth Burleigh passed away at the home of her son J. A. Burleigh at 7:30 last evening. May 2, 1923. Mrs. Burleigh had the distinction of being the oldest inhabitant of Wallowa County, and one of the first residents of Enterprise, having come to the county with her husband and children in April 1886.They first located at Joseph and after one year there came to Enterprise. Being the third family to settle here, the others being the families of John Zurcher and R. F. Stubblefield. Mrs. Burleigh conducted the first restaurant and hotel in Enterprise, June 1887.

Elizabeth Dougherty was born near Wheeling, West Virginia, February 2, 1830. She was married on May 22, 1855 to Presley M. Burleigh, who preceded her to the beyond about twenty years ago. They were the parents of nine children, two daughters and seven sons, four of whom are now living: Mrs.. Catherine Zellar, of Walla Walla; Rev. Wm. G. of Washington, D. C.; James A. and Walter S. of Enterprise. She is survived by 15 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Mrs.. Burleigh was converted and became a member of the Methodist church when 17 years of age, dying in the faith. She was active in church work when health would permit and was a member of the Dependable class of the M. E. Sunday school. She was a woman of keen mind who kept abreast of the times and was able to hold her own in an argument on public affairs with her two lawyer sons. When she was past 80 years of age she took a homestead in the county and proved up on it. But she was a home staying woman and never ceased to find delight in reading and mental growth. In this respect she left an indelible imprint on her children. Two day before her death her mind was as alert and her memory as clear as 60 years ago. The funeral will be held this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the home of J.A. Burleigh.
