First Generation  Next

1. Franz Gollner was born on 9 Nov 1821 in Gerden in Preussen, Germany, died on 19 Oct 1886 in Boggs Run, Marshall County, West Virginia at age 64, and was buried McMechen Cemetery in McMechen, Marshall County, West Virginia.

Franz married Amelie Giesler in 1845 in Germany. Amelie was born on 16 Feb 1827 in Lauenforde, Hannover, Germany, died on 28 Feb 1906 in West Virginia at age 79, and was buried McMechen Cemetery in McMechen, Marshall County, West Virginia.

General Notes: The birth date and place of both Franz and Amelie (Giesler) are from the records of the St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Benwood, West Virginia.

A family history, provided by descendant, Phyllis Gellner Walters, names Franz' birthplace, and the location of their marriage, as Gehrden Nordrhein-Westfalen.

Franz is also "Frank" Goellner and Gellner in church records. Amelie is also Emilie Gieseler. In other records, her given named is spelled Emelia & Amelia.

Frank Gollner's death occurred as a result of a wagon accident. An abbreviated version from the church records: "..He was operating a two wheel market wagon pushing it up a hill when he lost control and it came backwards running over him injuring him critically. Three days later he died on October 19, 1886 at the age of 64."

The Wheeling Daily Intelligencer, Monday, October 18, 1886
A FARMER'S FATALITY - FRANK GILNER MORTALLY HURT
Frank Gilner, a German farmer, living about four miles from the city up Bogg's run, was returning shortly after dark, in his wagon, so accompanied by his wife, when they met with a serious accident, which will probably end in Mr. Gilner's death. The evening was very dark, and the wagon collided with a stump and was upset in the road. Gilner was thrown under it and his wife in the road beside it. The horse in his frightened plunging tramped on one of Mrs. Gilner's hands, crushing and mangling it terribly. - The woman's agonized shrieks attracted the attention of neighbors, and the couple were removed from their perilous and painful positions to a place of comfort and safety, and Dr. J. H. Pipes summoned. He found that three or four of Gilner's ribs had been broken, and that he had suffered also serious internal injuries. His wounds are so severe that Dr. Pipes pronounced his recovery almost impossible. - Mrs. Gilner, though her injuries are exceedingly painful and will lay her up for some time, wul recover. - Gilner was 60 or 65 years of age, and a well known farmer.

The death record of Frank Gollner indicates that his father was John.

Franz and Emilie arrived in Baltimore, Maryland in August 1851 with their two year old daughter, Mary. [Son, William's death records states he, too, was born in Germany.] They settled in Ohio County (W) Virginia, but were residents of Belmont County, Ohio for a number of years until 1871, when they moved to Boggs Run, Marshall County, West Virginia.
