West Monongalia, Monongalia County, Virginia 1840 census

There is a Michael Moore listed with 8 in the household:

2 males 0-5 years (Noah & ?)

1 male 5-10 years (Nimrod Jackson)

1 male 30-40 years (which would be the right age for Michael)

2 females 0-5 years (Catherine, Frances)

1 female 5-10 years (Mary)

1 females 30-40 years (which would be the right age for Elizabeth Shanes)

However, the number of children isn't correct. Elizabeth and Michael had 7 children, 5 girls and 2 boys, the census lists 3 males and 3 females under 10 years of age. It is most likely that Christena (born November 1840) was not counted at the time of the census but the ages of the females are still not correct nor the number of male children. Margaret (born about 1828) would have been 12 but doesn't fit any of the age categories.

Neighboring residents are Isaac Moore (aged 30-40) and Crawford Moore (aged 20-30). Also listed is John Swan (aged 30-40)...one of Michael's sons is named Remembrance "Swann" Moore.

"Early Settlers" in the "History of Welcome Community" by A. L. Booth (1939) says:

"Michael Moore-moved here from a farm opposite Powhatan, Ohio in 1853 or '54. He lived in a log house at the foot of hill on the farm where his grandson, Chas. Moore now lives."

Be aware that there is another Michael Moore, a store owner, in the area. He was born about 1828 and died in January 1909 at age 81. He was the son of Jacob Moore and his siblings were: Sophrona, John, Wilford, William, Elizabeth, Andrew, Jackson, Mary, Jane and Franklin. His wife was Catherine and some of his children were Eva, Delora, Ida, Alice, Kate, Clem, Curtis, Roy and Mike Moore, Jr, Jennie. This information was taken from Wetzel County Obituaries.

According to Sylvia Sine Whittaker, "Jacob and Anna Moore took in two children when their son Michael's wife Elizabeth Shanes (Shinn?) died in 1841. The girl was named Mary and was about 9 years old and the boy was Noah and his age was about 4. They both were listed in the 1850 census as being with Jacob and his wife Mary was listed as being 17 and Noah as 12. Michael married Margaret Sine who was about 17 years of age on June 12, 1842 in Green County, Pa and Michael's oldest child at the time was a daughter by the name of Margaret, she was age 16. A son Nimrod age 12, Mary age 8, Frances age 7, Noah 4, Catherine 3. It is not known whether the separation of the children took place at Michael's wife's death or some date before his marriage to the 17 years old Margaret Sine."

Sylvia postulates the Elizabeth may have died at the birth of daughter Cristena and that a year later, Margaret Sine refused to care for these children as she was about the same age as Michael's oldest daughter and the baby less than a year.

See research papers of Dorothy Hennen Cornerstone Genealogy Society, Waynesburg PA as referenced by Sylvia Sine Whittaker.

On death certificate found at the West Virginia Division of Culture and History website (http://www.wvculture.org/history/archivesindex.aspx) , Remembrance's father is correctly noted as "Michael Moore" but his mother is named "Margaret Archey". This conflicts with the marriage of Michael and Margaret Sine in Waynesburg PA record. I looked up all the "Archey's" of that period and could find no relationship with the Moore's. I believe the data on the death certificate to be incorrect. The fact that Remembrance died in Triadelphia leads me to believe he may have been living with his daughter Ida Moore Mathew.

24. NORA AGNES7 MOORE (REMEMBRANCE SWANN6, MICHAEL5, JACOB J.4, MICHAEL3, PHILLIP2, JOHN1) was born 07 Sep 1882 in Woodlands, West Virginia, and died 15 Nov 1968 in Bens Run, West Virgina. She married ALBERT CHRISTIAN MEYER 30 Oct 1903 in Tyler County, West Virginia, son of GOTTLOB MAIER and ELIZABETHA FUCHS. He was born 08 Feb 1872 in Monroe County, Ohio, and died 07 Apr 1947 in Hannibal, Ohio.

Notes for NORA AGNES MOORE:

In the 1900 Federal census for Franklin District, Marshall County, West Virginia, Nora A. Moore is listed as a "servant", aged 17, in the household of John and Mary Wilson and their five sons and two grandchildren.

9-Nora Agnes Moore with sister May?

According to her daughter, Lula Meyer Thomas, Nora worked as a housemaid for the Frank Travis family who was a neighbor to Frederick and Frederica Fuchs--the uncle and aunt with whom Albert C. Meyer, Sr. lived in Tyler County, West Virginia. Lula guesses that is how her parents met; Nora was 21 years old and Albert was 31 years old when they married. Residence for Nora was "Watkins, Tyler County"--possibly the family she worked for?

After many moves as tenant farmers, they eventually lived on a farm purchased by their son Woodrow Meyer above Hannibal, Monroe County, Ohio. After Albert's death in 1947, Nora continued to live on her son's farm with two other sons, Clyde and Harry, until she became mentally incapacitated and was moved to a nursing home on the West Virginia side of the Ohio River. Her family was unhappy with the care she was receiving and Lula took her into her home in Bens Run, WV where she lived until her death in 1968. Her son Woodrow preceded her in death in 1967.

Lula remembers that her mother raised chickens and ducks and didn't have to share their produce or profits as did her husband with his crops. "Mother got the feathers for her bed ticking from her ducks." They had two feather beds and the rest were filled with straw. Each spring Nora would have the children remove the old straw and she would wash the ticking. The children would then refill the mattresses, usually at thrashing time when the straw was fresh. Lula says her mother tested whether the duck's feathers were ready to pluck by picking out two feathers. If there was blood on the ends, then it was not time to pluck.

Notes for ALBERT CHRISTIAN MEYER:

Some records show middle name as Christian - His son, Albert Jr.'s records show name as Christ.

Occupation: Blacksmith - Farmer

Member of St. Johns Methodist Church, Sardis, Ohio

Funeral was at St. Johns Methodist Church, Sardis, Ohio

Officiating Minister was Rev. J.A. Wright

Buried in North View Cemetery, New Martinsville, West Virginia

According to his daughter, Lula Meyer Thomas, during the flu epidemic of 1917-18, her father was working as a blacksmith for the Hopewell Gas Company but because so many of his neighbors were sick with the flu, he missed work so he could feed his neighbors' farm animals and was fired.

11-Albert Christian Meyer, left, back row, blacksmith for the Hopewell Gas Company

Lula also recalled that her father spoke with a German accent and had a hearty laugh.

Albert was the youngest child of Gottleib and Elizabeth Katharina Fuchs Meyer and was born in Monroe County, Ohio on February 8, 1872. His baptism is recorded at the Zion Evangelical Church, Hannibal, Ohio on May 26, 1872.

When he was only five-years old, Albert's father, age 48, died of an "obstruction of the bowel" on September 30, 1877, according to the records of the Zion Evangelical Church.

Just six years later in 1883, his 51-year-old mother "a few weeks before her death, suffered from mental disorder and on December 22 was found by the water drowned (trough or vat?)". Albert was 11 years old. He left Monroe County and went across the Ohio River to live with his mother's brother and his wife, Gottleib and Frederika Fuchs, who lived on Cider Run Hill near Ten Mile, West Virginia. They also ran a store.

12-Albert Christian Meyer

Albert was 31 years old when he married Nora, age 23, on October 30, 1903 in Sandusky, Tyler County, West Virginia. Nora had worked as a housemaid at the neighboring Frank Travis farm next to his aunt's farm and that is how they met according to their daughter Lula.

Their first child, Lula Christina Meyer, was born in 1905 at the Fuchs farm. Lula said she was eight years old when her great-aunt Frederika Fuchs died.

Besides working as a blacksmith, Albert was a tenant farmer. In 1921, the year Albert C. Meyer, Jr. was born, they lived on the Fred Travis farm at Ten Mile, West Virginia. Next they lived and worked on the Yoho farm in Minnie, West Virginia. From about 1927-28 they lived at the Wells farm then in 1929, they moved to the Pyle farm. In 1932, they moved to the Schrader farm. They raised corn, wheat, oats, rye, hay, cattle and hogs.

13-Clyde Meyer (on horse) with his father Albert Christian Meyer

In February 1947, they moved to Ohio after their son Woody, who lived in Kent, Ohio, bought a farm near his wife's (Berger) family's home above Hannibal, Ohio.

Al and Lula recall that their Dad could yodel very well and liked limberger cheese. Al also remembered that as a blacksmith his Dad would take the u-shaped magneto out of old Model Ts and make a cold chisel. He also made new rims for wagon wheels. Albert recalls cranking the blower on the forge to keep the fire going.

Albert remembers that his Dad said "if you get a lickin' at school, you'll get another one when you get home." So Albert said they never told him.

Lula's daughter Vera recalls how Albert would travel the 8-10 miles to New Martinsville to sell their cream or butter and when he would return late in the evening, would start yodeling so that Nora could hear him approaching and could start his dinner.

14-After a hard day working on the farm, Albert Christian Meyer with sons Harry, Woody, Albert and ?
