Little Red Schoolhouse

Farewell to the Little Red Schoolhouse,
Farewell to the far-sounding bell,
Farewell to the teacher and pupils,
Farewell to the moss-covered well.

Farewell to erasers and blackboards,
Farewell to the pot-bellied stove,
To notes and to jackknife initials,
To dandelion chains that we wove.

Farewell to the cipher and spelldown,
Farewell to the recess and play,
To marbles and hopscotch and redlight,
To Andy (that's over) and sleigh.

Farewell to the Little Red Schoolhouse
That has graced the valley so long;
Now, only our memories can serve us
Along with an echo and song.
