Brown Cemetery is located off US Route 33 at Hartford, WV. This cemetery had been neglected for many years until November 15, 2003 when 10 AmeriCorps workers arrived at the request of Celesty Fielder of the Mason County Economic Development Office. After Ms Fielder had gone to Brown Cemetery to photograph it and finding that it had not been maintained since the late 1960s, she was on a mission. Now one cemetery in Mason County has been restored or at least uncovered.
|This photo was taken before the AmeriCorps workers and volunteers started the clean up.||This photo was taken after all of their hard work.|
|These are the workers and Hartford Mayor Robert Crouse (fourth from the left in the second row) taken during the clean up of the cemetery November 15, 2003. If you look behind them, I think they should all be proud. It looks like if anyone stopped here looking for their roots, they will now be able to see the tombstones.|
Here are the names of the folks I have at this time who are buried in this cemetery. I know there are more and if anyone has additional information, such as dates of birth, death, relationship, etc, I will be glad to add it. I want to thank Norma Frank for information added to this cemetery.
