The Mason County National Guard Armory is located on land that once belonged to William Stewart. William was the first Stewart in Mason County, coming from Augusta County in 1804 at the age of 2 years. His mother died at his birth and his father was killed in an accident two years later. William and his sister Elizabeth were sent to Mason County to live with their maternal grandparents, the Alishires. William became a Colonel in the Virginia Militia and commanded the forces in Mason County for many years. He resigned his commission when the Civil War began. His wife Martha was the daughter of Captain Anthony VanSickle who led the Mason County Riflemen during the War of 1812.
