William Cameron Safford, 60, 512 Kathnor Lane, Point Pleasant,
died Tuesday morning in the University Hospital in Columbus, Ohio,
following a short illness.
Born June 15, 1922, at Gallipolis, Ohio, he was the son of the
late Herald Reed Safford and Nevola Lowe Safford.
A member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, he was employed
with the AEP Corporation of Columbus, Ohio, and was a construction
supervisor at the Mountaineer Plant in New Haven. He was a World
War II Navy veteran and a First Lieutenant in the National Guard
at Point Pleasant for several years.
He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge Morning Dawn No. 007,
Gallipolis; the Royal Arch Masons Chapter No. 79, Gallipolis;
the Moriah Council No. 32 Royal and Select Masters, Gallipolis;
the Franklin Commandary No. 17 of Point Pleasant; the Beni Kedem
Temple and Legion of Honor of Charleston; the Pat Wilson Shrine
Club of Point Pleasant; Clan No. Four Mountaineer Grand and Glorious
Order of Hillbilly Degree of Point Pleasant; and American Legion
Post 23 of Point Pleasant.
He is survived by his wife, Violet Mae Lucas Safford; two sons,
Stephen Cameron Safford, Point Pleasant, and Ronald Allan Safford,
Orlando, Fla.; two brothers, Robert Safford, Sarasota, Fla. and
Lonnie Safford, of Coverty, Rhode Island; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Kathleen Safford Eich.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 pm at the Wilcoxen
Funeral Home in Point Pleasant with the Rev. Tally Hanna officiating.
Burial will follow in Kirkland Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call at the Wilcoxen Funeral Home from 7-9 pm Wednesday.
Masonic graveside rites will be conducted by Minturn Lodge No.
19 AF-AM of Point Pleasant.
In lieu of flowers the family requests all donations or contributions
be made to the Mason County Cancer Fund.

Services Set For Retired UM Minister
Rev. David L Sayre, 78, Columbus, O. and formerly of Point Pleasant,
died Monday at 3 am in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary Eileen
Ashcraft, Columbus.
He was a retired minister of the W.Va. Conference of United Methodist
Churches with 40 years of service. He was a former minister of
both the Heights and Bellemead United Methodist Churches in Point
Pleasant.
Other United Methodist Churches he served were Leon, Valley Mills,
Greenwood, Northview, Shinston and Silverton.
He was a member of the Longview Methodist Church of Evans. He
was also a former chairman of the Rural Light Commission of the
W.Va. Conference and a graduate of the Bonebrake Theological Seminary
of Dayton, Ohio.
Rev. Sayre was born July 6, 1899, to the late David Wesley and
Mary Barnett Sayre. His wife was the late Jessie F Sayre.
Other survivors besides his daughter are: a foster-son Spicer
P (Bill) Chatt, Clarksburg; a brother, Hobart Sayre, Fostoria,
O.; a sister, Mrs. Leonard Tippon, Columbus; two grandchildren
and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held Thursday at 11 am at the Heights United
Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Longview Cemetery
in Evans.
Friends may call at the Crow-Hussell Funeral Home, Wednesday from
4 to 6 pm and 7 to 10 pm.

Smith Infant Dies Thursday
Clarence E Smith, three-month-old son of Ruby Smith, 223 First
Street, Point Pleasant, was pronounced dead on arrival at Pleasant
Valley Hospital Thursday morning.
He is also survived by a maternal grandmother Gladys Smith, Point
Pleasant.
Funeral services will be held Saturday 10 am in the Stevens Funeral
Home with John Steel, minister, officiating. Burial will be in
Lone Oak Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 pm today.

Leon Farmer Dies After Long Illness
Spencer Stutler, 90, Leon, died Friday at Pleasant Valley Hospital
following a lengthy illness.
He was a retired farmer.
Survivors included his wife, Corda Snyder Stutler, five sons,
Robert, Arbuckle; Charles, Ernie and Donald, all of Leon; Clayton,
Radnor, Ohio; 11 daughters: Mrs. Marie Thaxton, Mrs. Dollie Adkins,
both of Leon; Mrs. Clara Bochman, Vermillion, Ohio; Mrs. Betty
LaBella, Toledo, Ohio; Mrs. Mabel Johnson, Lorain, Ohio; Mrs.
Opal Whitt, Pennsylvania; Mrs. Mary Stover, Point Pleasant; Mrs.
Goldie Crump, Marion, Ohio; Mrs. Lucy Reed, Tryon, Ohio; Mrs.
Margie Oliver, Marion, Ohio; Mrs. Cerneila Thornton; four brothers,
John Stutler, Radnor, Ohio; Perry Stutler, Point Pleasant; Clarence
Stutler, Gallipolis and George Stutler, Columbus; three sisters,
Mrs. Belle Corffie, Leon; Mrs. Ivy Snyder, Elmwood; Mrs. Sade
Greenlee, Coolsville and 62 grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Monday at 2 pm at the Wolfe Valley Church
on Rt. 3, Leon. Burial will follow in the Wolfe Valley Cemetery.

Ida Varian, 87, Succumbs To Illness
Mrs. Ida E Varian, 87, 2101 Mt. Vernon Ave., died Sunday evening
at Pleasant Valley Hospital, after a short illness.
Born Nov. 22, 1890, in Mason County, she was a daughter of the
late Lorenzo Dow Clendenen and Lyda Anne McCullough Clendenen.
She was a member of the Heights United Methodist Church.
Her husband, John Varian, died in Oct. 1963. Also preceding her
in death were a sister, Ora, and a brother, John F (Rags) Clendenen.
Survivors include one sister, Mrs. John R (Daisy) Douglass, Point
Pleasant; and four nephews, John F, George T and Kendall E Clendenen,
all of Point Pleasant, and Jeffrey L Clendenen, Letart.
Services will be held Wednesday at 2 pm at Wilcoxen Funeral Home
with the Rev. Thomas Malcolm officiating. Burial will be in Lone
Oak Cemetery.

Graham Windon Waggener, 87, Charlotte, N.C., formerly of Point
Pleasant, died Wednesday in a Charlotte hospital.
Born May 15, 1895 at Charleston, W.Va., he was the son of the
late Graham B and Clara Windon Waggener.
He was a retired Lieutenant JG of the US Navy and served in World
War I and World War II. He was also a former bonier inspector
for the Continental Insurance Company.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Waggener, in 1974.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. KC (Mary Sue) Moore, Venice,
California, and Mrs. RT (Elizabeth) Savage, Orinda, California;
one brother, JS Waggener, Tampa, Fla.; and a sister-in-law, Mrs.
Freda Waggener, Point Pleasant.
Graveside services will be at 11 am Saturday in Kirkland Memorial
Gardens with the Rev. Malcolm C McIver III officiating.
Arrangements are by the Crow-Hussell Funeral Home.

H Whittington Succumbs After Long Illness
Harold M Whittington, 70, 1426 Kanawha Street, Point Pleasant,
died Sunday afternoon in Pleasant Valley Hospital after a long
illness.
He was born Dec. 9, 1907, in Ambrosia, to the late James Robert
and Lottie Levenia McDermitt Whittington.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Horton, Robert and
Sidney.
He was a member of the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Tressie Radcliff Whittington; three brothers,
Clarence Whittington, Rt. 2, Point Pleasant; Lester Whittington,
Columbus, and William Whittington, Cheylan; one sister, Mrs. Margaret
Meredith, Fairborn, O. and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday 1:30 pm in the Good Shepherd
United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Icenhower and the Rev.
Raymond Bell officiating. Burial will be in the Pullins Cemetery
at Brighton.
Friends may call at the Wilcoxen Funeral Home after 7 pm today.
The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to services.

Jeremy Scott Williams, 13 day-old son of Delbert and Wanda Gale
Leport Williams, Gallipolis Ferry, died Saturday afternoon in
the Charleston Area Medical Center, Charleston.
He was born Jan 2, 1978, 7:34 pm in Pleasant Valley Hospital,
and was named the winner in the Point Pleasant Register's 1978
Baby Derby Contest.
Surviving in addition to his parents are the maternal grandparents,
William and Augusta Leport, Henderson; maternal great-grandparents,
Mrs. Missouri Robinson, Henderson, and Mrs. Virginia Leport, Henderson;
Paternal grandparents, Leslie Roy and Mary Ann Williams, Gallipolis
Ferry; paternal great-grandparents, Mrs. Lura Ethel Williams,
Roanoke, Va., and Oscar and Gladys Smith, Charleston.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, 1 pm at the Wilcoxen
Funeral Home with the Rev. Fred D McCallister officiating. Burial
will follow in the Concord Cemetery.
