Clerc Sayre Dies Wednesday

Clerc Sayre, 76, Point Pleasant, Flatrock Community, was dead on arrival at Pleasant Valley Hospital Wednesday.
Born Aug. 9, 1903, at Rock Castle, W.Va., he was a son of the late Abe Sayre and Sally Harpole Sayre.
A self-employed trucker for 30 years, Sayre was also a farmer, and was retired from City Ice and Fuel after 12 years of service.
He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge No. 33 of Point Pleasant.
Surviving are his wife, Anna Laziman Sayre; two sons, Orian Sayre, Toledo, Ohio and Abe Sayre II, Decatur, Ga.; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, 1:30 pm at the Wilcoxen Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Icenhower officiating. Burial will follow in the Suncrest Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 7 to 9 pm.

Funeral services for Clerc Sayre, 76, Point Pleasant, who died Wednesday at Pleasant Valley Hospital, will be held Saturday, 1:30 pm, at the Wilcoxen Funeral Home.

Leo F Shaw, 58, Succumbs

Leo Francis Shaw, 58, Apple Grove, was dead on arrival at Pleasant Valley Hospital
He was a truck driver for the Chemical Leaman Tank Line and served as a third class Naval seaman during World War II. He was a member of the Teamsters Union Local at Charleston.
He was born at Huntington on Aug. 29, 1921, a son of the late James A Shaw and Mary Adams Shaw.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Francis McCarty Shaw; one son, Robert Lee Shaw, Hampton, Va.; one daughter, Mrs. Connie Sue Dalton, Apple Grove; four brothers, Dennis, John, Vincent and Andrew Shaw, all of Ona; four sisters, Margaret Sandmayer, Loveland, Ohio, Josephine Day, Bellview, Kentucky, Agnes Darst, Mishauwaka, Indiana, and Cecelia Shaw, New York, N.Y.; and two grandchildren, Nessel Erin Dalton and Robert Francis Shaw.
Services will be held Sunday at 2 pm at the Stevens Funeral Home in Point Pleasant with the Rev. William Thomas officiating. Burial will be in the Beale Chapel Cemetery at Apple Grove.

Former Mason Resident Dies

Miss Lessie G Sleeth, 84, Charleston, W.Va., formerly of Mason, died Sunday morning in the Charleston General Hospital.
Born Jan 27, 1896 at Spencer, W.Va., Miss Sleeth was a retired schoolteacher, having taught for 44 years in the Mason and Roane County School Systems. She was a graduate of Marshall University.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Henry and Nora Riddle Sleeth.
Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Lucy Harrison, Clifton, Miss Ivy Sleeth, Charleston, and Mrs. Thelma McCoy, Belpre, Ohio; and two brothers, O Forest Sleeth, Charleston, and Virgil L Sleeth, Huntington.

Death Claims William John Smith

William John Smith, 58, Gallipolis Ferry, died Tuesday at Pleasant Valley Hospital. Born September 22, 1921 in Henderson, he was the son of the late William Gid and Emma Mae Logan Smith. Mr. Smith was a retired employee of the McCauley Upholstery in Parkersburg.
Surviving are one son, William John Smith Jr.; five brothers, Hillis B. and Rev. Thurman Allen Smith, both of Gallipolis Ferry, Norman E. Smith, Fleming, Ohio, Ray Otho Smith, Southside, and Jimmy F. Smith, Point Pleasant; a step son, Vernon Lambert, Parkersburg; and three step daughters, Dolores Davis, Chesapeake, Ohio, Betty Parson, Parkersburg, and Goldie Smith, Fleming, Ohio.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 pm at the Wyoma Pentacostal Church in Gallipolis Ferry with the Rev. Jimmy Thornton officiating. Friends may call at Stevens Funeral Home in Point Pleasant after 2 pm Thursday.

James Sterling Snead Succumbs

James Sterling Snead, 64, Rt. 1, Fairview Road, Point Pleasant, died Thursday morning in the Holzer Medical Center.
He was a retired construction worker and carpenter, and a member of the Carpenters' Local No. 1159.
Born June 4, 1915, in Kanawha County, he was the son of the late Joseph A and Mollie Spurlock Snead.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Jones Snead; three sisters, Mrs. Bea Martin, Cincinnati, Ohio, Mrs. Kathy Alishire, Printer, W.Va., Miss Mary (Maggie) Snead, Gallipolis; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, 2 pm at the Crow-Hussell Funeral Home with the Rev. Carl Preece and Rev. Ralph Sager officiating.
Burial will follow in the Kirkland Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call at the funeral home today 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm.

Former Leon Resident Dies

Charles H. Thomas, 64, 102 South Eureka Street, Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Leon, died Sunday evening in the Grant Hospital, Columbus, after a short illness.
Born Sept. 19, 1915, in Leon, he was the son of the late Chancy and Herma Pierson Thomas.
He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U. S. Navy, and was employed with the Department of Highways, Columbus.
One son, Charles E. Thomas, preceded him in death, along with one sister, Lillian Rice, and two brothers, Dale Thomas and Chancy E. Thomas Jr.
Surviving are his daughter-in-law, Patty Thomas, Columbus; and one grandson, Charles Thomas, Columbus; seven sisters, Mrs. Pearl Greenlee, Leon, Mrs. Icyle Belleville, Leon, Mrs. Elsie Paxton, Cabin Creek, Mrs. Cora Plants, Point Pleasant, Miss Bertha Thomas, Point Pleasant, Mrs. Desta Morris, Carroll, Ohio, Mrs. Minnie Baker, Coolville, Ohio.
Funeral services will be Thursday 1:30 pm in the Wilcoxen Funeral Home with the Rev. Herman H. Jordan officiating. Burial will follow in the Yauger Cemetery, Leon.
Friends may call at the Wilcoxen Funeral Home 7 to 9 pm Wednesday.

Death Claims Ada Thompson

Mrs. Ada Roush Thompson, 94, of the Letart Oak Grove Community, died Wednesday at 8 pm at her home following a short illness.
She was born Oct. 25, 1885 at Broad Run, daughter of the late Moses D. and Lydia Roush, and was a member of the Oak Grove United Methodist Church. Her husband Harry R. Thompson died on Dec. 25, 1977.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Taft (Amy) Boston, Letart, and Mrs. Walter (Esther) Witmer, Ashland, Ohio; two sons, Albert D. Thompson and Don F. Thompson, both of Letart; and nine grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were three sisters and five brothers.
Services for Mrs. Thompson will be held Saturday at 1:30 pm at the Oak Grove United Methodist Church by the Rev. Robert Fulton and Rev. Joe Hammack. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Wilcoxen Funeral Home in Point Pleasant after 2 pm Friday. The body will be take to the church one hour before services.

Mrs. Genevieve Raike Taylor, 54, 310 B Street, Ceredo, W.Va. died Friday in a Huntington hospital.
She was an executive secretary of Appalachian Power Company for 32 years; a resident of Ceredo for the past 27 years; a graduate of Marshall University; a member of the Marshall University Alumni Association; and member of Alpha Z Sorority.
Her father was the late Ralph Raike.
Surviving are her mother, Belle Darst Raike, Point Pleasant; husband, Keith Taylor, Ceredo; brother, Ralph of Point Pleasant; niece, Kathryn Raike, Point Pleasant; two nephews, Ralph David and Andrew Raike, Point Pleasant.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, 2 p.m., at the Klingle Carpenter Mortuary, Huntington, with Rev. Tally Hanna officiating. Burial will follow in the Lone Oak Cemetery.
Friends may call at the mortuary from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday.

Mrs. Ona Luava Stone Van Matre, 83, Sand Hill Road, Point Pleasant, died Monday after a long illness.
Born Oct. 8, 1896, in Cottageville, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. O M Stone. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hebron, Ohio, and had attended the business school at East Liverpool.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, on Oct. 29, 1975, and also four sisters and one brother.
Surviving are a niece, Mrs. Ella Luava McKinnis, Toledo, Ohio; and three great-nieces, Mrs. John Booth of Michigan, Mrs. Sally Stalker and Mrs. Rose Haines, both of Toledo.

George M. Wamsley, 71, West Portsmouth, Ohio, died Sunday morning, 4:42 am, in a Portsmouth hospital.
He was the son of the late Charles F. and Veva F. "Kitty" Wamsley of Henderson.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Mary Jean Wamsley, are three sons, Charles E. and Marion L. Wamsley, both of Portsmouth, Ohio, and George R. Wamsley, Point Pleasant; one daughter, Mrs. Cheri Reese, Portsmouth, Ohio; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Oakley "Belle" Willet, 72, Rt. 35, Henderson, died Saturday at Holzer Medical Center.
Born March 31, 1906, in Mason County, she was the daughter of the later Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hutten.
She attended the Grace Baptist Church.
Surviving are four daughters, Velma Willet of Henderson, Mary Ann McGowan, Cheshire, Mrs. Freda Roach, Hartford, and Mrs. Evelyn Lane, Point Pleasant; nine sons, Fred and Raymond of Clifton, Virgil, Ray, Larry and Charles of Point Pleasant, Bob, Carl and Clifford of Henderson; one sister, Mrs. Sara Stone, Lancaster, Ohio; 26 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, 2 pm at the Crow-Hussell Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Coleman officiating. Burial will follow in the Lone Oak Cemetery.

Death Claims Anna Young

Anna L. Young, 72, Mason, died Wednesday at her residence as the result of an apparent heart attack.
She was born July 31, 1907 in Burlingham, Ohio, a daughter of the late James Wilbur Young and Jennie Belle Roush Young, and was a member of the United Brethren Church of Mason.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Jeffers, Mason; two sisters, Mrs. Stella M. Bush and Mrs. Sarah M. Smith, both of Mason; three brothers, James F. Young, Jacksonville, Ohio, William E. Young, Columbus, Ohio, and George C. Rowley, Mason; one granddaughter, Mrs. Linda Priddy, Mason; and two great-grandchildren, Loretta and J.R., both of Mason.
Services will be held Saturday at 1 pm at the Foglesong Funeral Home with the Rev. George Hoschar officiating. Interment will be in Burlingham (Ohio) Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 pm Friday.
