GALLIPOLIS FERRY - Captain Howard E. Garland, 94, of Gallipolis
Ferry, died Sunday, September 16, 2001 at his residence.
Born October 13, 1906 in Dravosburg, Pennsylvania, he was a son
of the late George and Ella (Jones) Garland.
He was a licensed Master Pilot of any gross tonnage upon the Ohio
and Kanawha Rivers, the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Missouri,
to New Orleans, Louisiana, and parts of the Monongahela, Allegheny
and Wolfe Rivers.
He worked 56 years on the inland waterways before retiring in
1978 as captain of the M/V L. Fiore of the Ohio River Company,
having worked for the Union Barge Line and American Barge Line
as well as working two years as a member of the Pennsylvania State
Mounted Police.
During World War II, he worked transporting LSTs and ocean going
ships from Pittsburgh to New Orleans, Louisiana.
The captain was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of
Point Pleasant, and attended Jordan Baptist Church of Gallipolis
Ferry; Master, Mates and Pilot's Association Commanders Club of
Disable American Veterans; and an honorary member of the United
Steel Workers of America.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by three
brothers, George, Walter, and William Garland; and a son-in-law,
Okey Tawney.
Survivors include his wife, Lida (Wilson) Garland of Gallipolis
Ferry; two sons and daughters-in-law, Howard Randall and Sandra
Garland of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Charles Wayne and Phyllis Garland
of Point Pleasant; two daughters and son-in-law; Mary Lou Tawney
of Gallipolis, Ohio, and Rita Ann and Norm Persin of Oak Hill,
Ohio; six grandchildren, Devin Adler of Cincinnati, Ohio, Jay
Saxton of Powersite, Missouri, Angela Eplion of Point Pleasant,
Greg Garland of Cincinnati, Ohio, Haley Persin Kreischer of Norwalk,
Ohio, and Jimmy Dan Persin of Oak Hill, Ohio; and four great-grandchildren,
Megan Adler, Matthew Eplion, Cary Adler and Holliday Saxton.
Services will be 1 p.m. on Thursday, September 20, 2001 at Wilcoxen
Funeral Home, Point Pleasant, with Paston Rory Swiney and the
Rev. William "Bud" Hatfield officiating. Burial will
follow in the Garland Family Cemetery, Gallipolis Ferry.

He was a native of Meigs County, Ohio, a carpenter and a member
of the Bradford Church of Christ and Carpenters Local 650, Pomeroy,
Ohio.
Surviving: son, Pearl Richard Gilkey of Clifton; grandson Mark
Gilkey of Hartford.

Nancy McKibben Gorsuch, 76, McArthur, died Tuesday, Nov. 13,
2001, at her residence.
Born July 21, 1925, in Henderson, W.Va., daughter of the late
Milllard and Nancy Lyons Snodgrass, she was a secretary and a
member of McArthur Presbyterian Church, Sereno Chapter 128 OES,
member FOE Aerie 2279 Ladies Auxiliary, Vinton County VFW Ladies
Auxiliary 5299, and a member of White Shrine.
She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Lawrence
Neil McKibben; three brothers, James, Norman and Maurice Snodgrass;
and two sisters, Mary Darst and Mildred Snodgrass. Surviving are
her husband, William Gorsuch; a son, Joseph C. (Mary Jo) McKibben
of Cincinnati; a daughter, Michelle (Robert) Steele of Gallipolis;
two grandchildren; a brother, Michael (Bonnie) Snodgrass of Point
Pleasant, W.Va.; and a sister-in-law, Betty Snodgrass of Point
Pleasant.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday in Garrett Funeral Home, McArthur,
with the Rev. Larry Lane and Walter Goble officiating. Burial
will be in Elk Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home
from 4-8 p.m. Thursday.
Eastern Star services will be at 7:30 p.m.

E. and Gertha Belle (Noble) Elliot, she was a homemaker, and a
member of Jordan Baptist Church, Gallipolis Ferry.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, George (Pete) Forrest
Hatfield.

Born May 24, 1924, in Mason County, she was a daughter of the
late William and Martha Montcastle.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ogen Hazlett; daughter
Elizabeth Hazlett; and six brothers and six sisters.
She was retired from the Mason County Board of Education as a
custodian, and was a member of the Ashton Baptist Church in Ashton.
Surviving are five sons and daughters-in-law, Danny and Carolyn
Hazlett of Apple Grove, James and June Hazlett of Tecumseh, Okla,
Dennis and Rebecca Hazlett of Shawnee, Okla, Ivan and Jane Hazlett
of Jackson, Mich, and Charles W and Debbie Hazlett of Point Pleasant;
brothers and sister, Ray and Ethel Montcastle of Arizona, Charles
and Jean Montcastle of Apple Grove, and Marie Donahue of Point
Pleasant; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and

LEON - Ephrum Golden Herdman, 80, of Leon, died Sunday, September

He was retired from the Foote Mineral Plant, New Haven. He was
also a lifetime farmer and former trustee of Point Grove Cemetery,
Leon.
Born March 13, 1921, in Leon, he was a son of the late Abraham
and Elizabeth (Thomas) Herdman. In addition to his parents, he
was preceded in death by his wife, Garnet (Miller) Herdman; three
brothers, Charles Herdman, Peter Herdman and Henry Herdman; and
five sisters, Beulah McDade, Mabel McDade, Clara McDade, Flora
Herdman and Dessie Herdman.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Darrell and Mary
Ann Herdman of Leon and Golden and Anna Marie Herdman of Point
Pleasant; daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and James Matheny of
Leon; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and two
sisters, Eulah McClure of Columbus, Ohio, and Pearl Deweese of

He was a retired boilermaker and member of the Boilermakers Local
667 in Winfield. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the
U.S. Army, and a member of the American Legion Mason County Post
23.
Born Sept. 12, 1923 in Point Pleasant, he was a son of the late
Charles Luther and Ona (Stover) Hesson. In addition to his parents,
he was also preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Lynn (Durst)
Hesson; a granddaughter, Donna Ann Hussell; a great-grandson,
Craig Matthew Mayes; and four brothers, Harley, Perry, Clarence
and Clinton Hesson; and three sisters, Irene Gardner, Iva Nease
and Betty Sayre.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Connie Jo and Edward
Hussell of Point Pleasant; three granddaughters and a great-granddaughter;
two sisters, Gertrude Holland and Clara Mae Hall, both of Point

POINT PLEASANT - Raymond Edwin Higginbotham, 65, of Point Pleasant,
died Wednesday, August 22, 2001 at Pleasant Valley Hospital, Point
Pleasant.
Born December 15, 1935 in Mason County, he was a son of Acel (Bass)
Higginbotham Cline of Point Pleasant, and the late Robert A. Higginbotham.
He was a security guard, a U.S. Army veteran serving in Vietnam,
and member of American Legion Post 0200 of Charleston, V.F.W.
Post 14000 of Charleston, and Teamsters Local 745 of Illinois.
In addition to his father, he was also preceded in death by a
brother Donald Higginbotham.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Karina Silva
Higginbotham of Point Pleasant; son, Raymond Edwin Higginbotham
II of Sunbright, Tennessee; stepfather, Henry Cline of Point Pleasant;
daughters, Crystal Carrasco Higginbotham of El Paso, Texas, Evelyn

PATRIOT, Ohio - Shirley (VanSickle) Hudson, 60, of Patriot died
Sunday, August 26, 2001, at her home.
Born June 8, 1941 in Southside, she was a daughter of the late
William "Tobe" and Goldia Mae (Dowell) VanSickle. She
was a member of Harmony Baptist Church, Salem Missionary Society,
Southside Community Center and was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister,
Maxine Hysell.
Survivors include her husband, Richard Hudson of Patriot; son
and daughter-in-law, Toby and Tammy Hudson of Bidwell; son and
daughter-in-law, Robin and Steve Rawlins of Gallipolis; three
sisters and brothers-in-law, Joan and Ray Higginbotham of Southside,
W.Va., Deloris VanSickle of Southside, and Peggy and Jack Kinnard
of Gallipolis Ferry, W.Va.; brother and sister-in-law, Phil and
Susan VanSickle of Southside; and three grandchildren.
Service will be 1 pm Wednesday at Wilcoxen Funeral Home, Point
Pleasant, W.Va., with the Rev. Ray DeWitt officiating. Burial
will follow in Harmony Cemetery, Southside.

BELPRE, Ohio - John R Irvin, 82, Belpre, died Sunday, Dec. 16,
2001, in Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg.
Born July 11, 1919, in Mason County, he was a son of the late
James E Irvin and Ella E (Hereford) Irvin.
He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Gertrude (Martin)
Irvin; sister, Marie McCoy; and brothers, James E, Robert H, Charles
L and Dr Carl Irvin.
He worked in the maintenance department at the DuPont Plant in
Charleston and was a US Army veteran during World War II, first
class, with anti-aircraft in the South Pacific. He was also a
member of the Presbyterian Church in Point Pleasant.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia (Hesson) Irvin; stepsons, Clinton
and Becky Hesson of Flatwoods, Ky., and Kevin and Lorraine Hesson
of Riner, Va.; stepdaughters, Cathy and David Pahl of Vienna,
W.Va., and Sandra Hesson of Parkersburg, W.Va.; seven step grandchildren
and one step-great-grandchild.
Services will be Wednesday at 11 am in Deal Funeral Home, with
the Rev. Charles Marker officiating. Burial will be in Mount Zion
Cemetery, Gallipolis Ferry. Friends may call at the funeral home

September 9, 2001, at her daughter's home in Hurricane after a
short illness.
A native of Mason County, she was formerly employed by the Department
of Employment Security for the state, and was a member of Calvary
Baptist Church in Charleston.
Survivors include a daughter, Rene Strigle of Hurricane; a sister,
Carolyn E Chambers of Point Pleasant; three grandchildren; and
four great-grandchildren.
Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Leon Baptist Church, Leon.
Burial will be in Leon Cemetery.

May 15, 2001 in Holzer Medical Center.
Born Nov. 3, 1928 in Point Pleasant, W.Va., son of the late Lowell
E. and Ora Windon Jackson, he was a laborer/construction worker,
a member of General Laborer Local 543 in Huntington, W.Va., Loyal
Order of the Moose 731 in Point Pleasant, and Mountain Lodge in
Southside.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Kerr Jackson.
Surviving are his wife, Bernice Newell Jackson; two sons, Randy
(Diania) Jackson of Mason, and Tim (Phyllis) Jackson of Southside;
a daughter, Kimberly (Rusty) Harbour of Apple Grove; and three
grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday in Beech Hill Church, with the
Rev. Bobby Woods officiating. Burial will be in Beech Hill Cemetery.

LEON - Howard Edward Jarrett, 72, Leon, died Sunday, November
4, 2001 at Eldercare of Ripley.
Born August 9, 1929 son of the late Jess Othel and Mary (McMurray)
Jarrett, he was a retired heavy equipment operator from the Operating
Engineers Local 132, Hinton, W.Va.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Fred Jarrett.
Surviving are his wife, Annabelle (Shamblin) Jarrett; daughters,
Jennifer Bush and Julie Benson of Silverton, Roberta Evans of
Second Creek, Delores Marble of Keedysville, Md., Linda Lewis

"Dick" Welker; her second husband, Donald Kauffman;
a son, Jim; and three brothers and a sister.

She retired from Gallipolis Developmental Center and attended
Bulaville Christian Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband,
Denny Lane; a daughter, Nedra S. Baird; and four brothers and
three sisters, Russell Ernest Stover, Charles Calvin Stover, Joseph
Raymond Stover, James Oliver Stover, Blanche Marie Stover, Frances
Nellie Burgess and Rosette Ann Thornton.
Surviving are a daughter, Geraldine Lane of Gallipolis; four grandchildren,
two great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild; a sister,

died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, in Inverness, Fla., following a short
illness.
Born March 27, 1910 in Flatrock, she was a daughter of the late
Orn and Caroline Pullin.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by
her husband, Herman Lathey; three sisters, Oan Fadley, Creed Staats
and Gladys Smith; and two brothers, Byron Pullin and Delbert Pullin.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Ralph (Rhea Jo) Eary of Cincinnati,
Ohio; a son, Glinn Lathey of Dunnellon, Fla.; two grandchildren
and a great-granddaughter; and two sisters, Mrs. Monroe (Helen)
Chase of Point Pleasant, and Mrs. Lucien (Evelyn) Staats of Naples,
Fla.
She will be buried in the Pullin Family Cemetery, Flatrock. The

TUCSON, Ariz. - Julia Maxine (Harrah) Laughlin, 89, Tucson, died
Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001 at the St. Mary's Hospice in Tucson.
She was formerly employed as an inspector at Roller Bearing Manufacturing;
a former resident of Canton, Ohio; a member, past matron and deputy
of the Order of Eastern Star, member of the VAW, and Daughters
of the American Revolution and member of the Presbyterian Church.
Born Dec. 2, 1911 in Point Pleasant, she was a daughter of the
late Edgar Maxwell and Roma E. (Gibbs) Harrah. In addition to
her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Henry
Piggott and Luke Laughlin.
She is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and
Harry Bishop of Tucson, June Baromi of Canton, Ohio, Paula and
Tim Dunne of Florida, and Diane and Don Taylor of Long Bottom,
Ohio; a son, Thomas Glodde of Virginia; sister, Rowena Vaughn

Richard L. "Cedric" Lewis, 69, Letart, died Tuesday,
Nov. 13, 2001, in Pleasant Valley Hospital.
Born Aug. 31, 1932, in Letart Falls, son of the late Harry and
Lola Mary Fisher Lewis, He was a retired employee of Ohio Valley
Electric Corp.'s Kyger Creek Plant after 35 years.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
Surviving are his wife, Susannah Roush Lewis; three daughters,
Cheryl L. (Fred) Kaylor of Letart, Mary Jane (Todd) Kitchen of
Mason, W.Va., and Anna M. Lewis of Point Pleasant, W.Va.; four
grandchildren; and a sister, Sheila J. (Willie) Henry of Gallipolis
Ferry, W.Va.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Virgil L. Lewis
and John N. Lewis.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday in Fogelsong-Tucker Funeral Home,
Mason, with the Rev. Bobby Woods officiating. Burial will be in
Kirkland Memorial Gardens, Point Pleasant. Friends may call at

MASON - Hervin A. Lieving, 98, of Mason, died Saturday, June 2,
2001 at his residence, following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Lieving was born May 19, 1903 at Graham Station, a son of
Frank B. Lieving and Lorena C. Hart Lieving.
He was owner and operator of Lieving Coal Company of West Columbia,
for more than 50 years. He was a member of Mason United Methodist
Church.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Lieving was preceded in death
by an infant daughter, Patricia Louise Lieving; a brother, Lemley
B. Lieving; and a sister, Zule Lieving Frye.
Surviving are his wife of 75 years, Hazel Heaton Lieving of Mason;
son, Raymond Lieving of West Columbia; daughter and son-in-law,
Peggy and Paul Harbrecht of Point Pleasant; daughter and son-in-law,
Loretta and Paul Roush of Daleville, Virginia; grandchildren,
Cindi Perry of Poquosan, Virginia, Lori Peal of Hurricane, West
Virginia, Greg Roush of Marietta, Georgia, Mark Roush of Winter
Park, Florida, Sheila Roush, Jane Zirkle and Mike Liwving, all

Ferry, died Monday, October 15, 2001 in Holzer Medical Center,
Gallipolis, Ohio.
She was a homemaker, and a member of the Pleasant Ridge Church,
Gallipolis Ferry.
Born April 23, 1919 in Gallipolis Ferry, she was a daughter of
the late George R. and Sylvia (Price) Henry.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by
her husband, Johnnie Ray Logan; an infant daughter and granddaughter;
and two brothers, Robert Henry and Donald Henry.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in- law, Margaret (Peggy)
and Richard Ward of Gallipolis Ferry; a son and daughter-in-law,
Ray and Cathy Logan of Gallipolis Ferry; three grandchildren,
Ronnie Newell, Vicki Woyan and Justin Logan; five great-grandchildren;
and three brothers, Charles Henry of Gallipolis Ferry,Paul Henry

Georgia, after a long illness.
She was a very loving and caring wife and mother.
Born September 16, 1924, in Douglas Co, Georgia, daughter of the
late Alan Leon and Elizabeth (Pace) Wortham.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband,
Howard A. Long, and a daughter, Linda C. (Long) Hammond.
Also, three sisters, Louise Wortham, Eunice Sedduth and Reba Prince
and two brothers, Raymond Lee and James Leon "J.L."

Surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard A. Long

She also was preceded in death by husbands, William M. Bush, Jesse
Herman Gardner and Theodore Bailey; a daughter, Evelyn Louise
Bush; one son, James Edward Bush; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter;
one stepson, William Bush; three brothers and two sisters, Lewis,
Charles and William Bush, Ernestine Moodispaugh and Virginia Allen.

William and Fannie Casto See, she was a homemaker, and had been
a cook at Gene Ball's Restaurant, Bob Evans, Thabbott's, G.C.
Murphy's, Point Pleasant Resort and the Mason County Jail.
She also worked at the Sylvania Plant in Point Pleasant, and had
also been a nurse's aide at Pleasant Valley Hospital.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Preston Hugh Love;
a son, William Edward Love; a daughter, Ruth Ellen Herndon; a
brother, Wesley Asberry See; and a sister, Ada Virginia See Chattin.
Surviving are three sons, Ronald Dale Love of Point Pleasant,
John Ray Love of Crown City, and Robert Hugh Love of North Carolina;
four daughters, Opal Love of Reynoldsburg, Nancy Evelyn Rayburn
and Mary Ann Winebrenner, both of Point Pleasant, and Betty Sue
Crawford of Gallipolis Ferry, W.Va.; and 16 grandchildren and
many great-grandchildren.

and a member of Pataskala United Methodist Church, church choir,
Girl Scouts Association and DAR.
She was also preceded in death by her father-in-law, Alva E. Luckeydoo.
Surviving are her husband, Roger L. Luckeydoo; two daughters,
Lt. Amy Luckeydoo (Robert) Moats, USN, MD, of Kingsland, Ga.,
and Lee M. Luckeydoo of Columbus; a grandson; a brother-in-law,
