died Tuesday, January 8, 2002, at Pleasant Valley Hospital.
The daughter of the late William and Lucy Smith Douglas, she was
a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband,
Elmo Dean Adkins; sons, Douglas M. "Mack" Adkins, John
Adkins; and daughter, Elizabeth Oldaker.
She is survived by sons; Dean Adkins of Larue, Ohio and Benny
Adkins of St. Augustine, Fl.; daughter, Minnie Jeffers of Point
Pleasant, Gertrude "Sue" Sullenburger of *Forstoria(sic),
Ohio, Helen Bowers, Brenda Tucker, and Wanda Flemmings, all of
Grimms Landing; brothers, Brycle Douglas of Parkersburg and Jimmy
Douglas of Leon; sister Margaret Pickens; 38 grandchildren, 51

Services will be 2 pm Friday at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo with
Pastors Randy Parsons and Carl Bailes officiating. Burial will
be at the Craig-Douglas Cemetery, Grimms Landing.

POINT PLEASANT - Mary Jane (Van Sickle) Adkins, 87, of Point
Pleasant, died Thursday, April 25, 2002, at Pleasant Valley Hospital
in Point Pleasant. Born June 10, 1914, in Putney, she was the
daughter of the late Eli Daniel and Minnie Catherine (Bowe) Van
Sickle.
She was the owner and operator of Mary Van's Beauty Shop in Point
Pleasant; a member of Main Street Baptist Church; member of the
Hidden Valley Country Club Women's Golf Association; the Mountaineer
Senior's Golf Association; and a graduate of the Charleston School
of Beauty.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband,
Robert G "Bob" Adkins; and three brothers, Charles,
Clyde and William "Tobe" Van Sickle.
She is survived by four daughters, Juanita (Leonard "Buster")
Riffle of Point Pleasant, Janet Garrison of Winter Haven, Fla.,
Barbara (William "Bill") Wallis of Louisa, Ky., Brenda
(Keith) West of Crown City, Ohio; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 am on Monday at the Crow-Hussell
Funeral Home in Point Pleasant with the Rev Richard Sargent officiating.
Burial will follow in Kirkland Memorial Gardens near Point Pleasant.
Visitation will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday from
5 to 9 pm.

Mr. Charles Evan Ake, 82, of
Frederick, MD, formerly of Point Pleasant, died Friday, January
25, 2002, at Northhampton Manor Nursing Home in Frederick.
Mr. Ake was the husband of Tomiko Okamoto Ake, who died in 1992.
Born May 29, 1919 in Mason, he was the son of the late Ruby Grow
Dougherty Ake and John Hubert Ake. He grew up in Point Pleasant
and Flat Rock.
Mr. Ake retired from the U.S. Army as a Master Sergeant. He served
in World War II and Korea.
Surviving are one son, James E. Ake of Woodsboro, MD and his wife,
Marion; two daughters, Ruby C. Bradley of Frederick, MD; and Sandra
Harris and her husband, Martin of Lexington Park, MD; seven grandchildren
and three great grandchildren, and one sister, Emma Jean Karschnik
and her husband of Scott Depot.
Mr. Ake was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 23 (sic) in Frederick.
Internment will be held on Feb 4 in Arlington National Cemetery,
Arlington, VA.

MASON - Delmar D Alexander, 81, of Mason, W.Va., died Tuesday,
May 21, 2002 at Holzer Medical Center, Gallipolis, Ohio.
Born July 10, 1920 in Union Township, Ohio, a son of the late
Joseph L and Rosella (Hamilton) Alexander, he retired in 1983
from the Maintenance Department at Phillip Sporn Power Plant.
He was also a World War II Army veteran and a member of the Mason
United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter,
Susan Alexander and his sons, Jerry Lee Alexander and Bruce D
Alexander.
He is survived by his wife, Coral E Alexander of Mason, W.Va.;
daughter-in-law, Brenda Alexander of Arvada, Colo.; granddaughter,
Jennifer Girton of Painted Post, N.Y.; brother and sister-inn-law,
Paul and Vera Alexander of Chandlersville, Ohio; brother-in-law
and sister-in-law, Sharma and Gene Heyman of Tiffin, Ohio; sister-in-law,
Wanda Thompson of Malta, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, May 24, 2002 at Foglesong-Tucker
Funeral Home, Mason, W.Va., with Reverend Rondal Browning officiating.
Burial will be at Wolf Creek in Union Township, Ohio. Military
service will be by Stewart-Johnson VFW Post 9926 and Smith-Capehart
American Legion Post 140.

IDAHO FALLS, IDAHO - Virginia Lewis Anderson, 81, of Idaho Falls,
died March 15, 2002, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.
She was born April 22, 1920 at Point Pleasant, W.Va. to the late
Harry Frank Lewis and Loula Gibbs Lewis. She grew up and attended
schools in the area.
She married F H "Andy" Anderson at the Point Pleasant
Presbyterian Church on June 1, 1946. She was a mother and a homemaker.
She was active in the First Presbyterian Church and served as
a Deacon in the church. She enjoyed playing bridge, gardening,
and valued the special friends in her life.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Jim Hines
of Memphis, Tenn.; daughter, Karen Anderson of Burlingame, Cal.;
and sister and brother-in-law, Harriet and William Cruickshanks
of Point Pleasant, W.Va.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one sister, and one
brother.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Saturday, March 23, 2002,
at the First Presbyterian Church in Idaho Falls, Idaho, with Reverend
Dennis Falasco officiating. The family will meet with friends
following the services.

Nancy L Nott Armbruster, 69, of Riverview, Florida, died Friday,
March 15, 2002, at Life Path Hospice House in Sun City Center,
Florida.
Born Dec 28, 1932 in Parkersburg, she was daughter of the late
Charles and Wanda (Dotson) Sheppard. She was also preceded in
death by husbands Donald Eugene Nott and James Armbruster; daughter
Teresa Hazelwood; and son Donald E Nott.
She is survived by son David A Nott of Riverview, Fla.; sisters
Dorothy Nott of Point Pleasant; step-sister Sonia Price of Point
Pleasant; and brother Robert D (Rosemary) Sheppard of Riverview,
Fla.; one son-in-law, Mike Hazelwood; 24 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren;
and nine step-children.
She was a member of St Pauls United Methodist Church in Point
Pleasant, attended East Side Baptist Church in Riverview, Florida,
member of OES No 75 of Point Pleasant and active in the local
shuffleboard association. She was a bookkeeper.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Church of God on Tuesday
at 11 am with Pastor Carl Swisher presiding. Burial will follow
at Kirkland Cemetery in Point Pleasant.

LEON - Richard Allen Arthur, 63 of Leon, died Sunday, February
24, 2002 at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center, Huntington.
Born March 13, 1938 in Columbus, Ohio, a son of the late Robert
and Genevieve (Sheridan) Arthur, he was an Army veteran, former
welder and carpenter for Westinghouse in Columbus, Ohio, was a
member of the Teamsters Union and attended Evans Church of God.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister,
Delores Jean Rieser.
He is survived by his wife, Lou Ann (Miller) Arthur; son, Everett
Allen Arthur of Leon; daughters, Terry Akers of Mason, Tammy Nut,
Jenny Lynn Logan, Delores Brown and Leya Ann Thrall, all of Columbus,
Ohio, and Marie Ward of Leon; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 am Thursday at Casto Funeral Home, Evans,

Montcastle; and an infant sister, Pauline Tavan.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, May Anne and

W.Va., died Sunday, July 7, 2002 at home.
Born April 12, 1932 in Elmwood, W.Va., he was a son of the late
George and Mae (Clark) Bailes. He was a retired chemical operator
from Goodyear, Apple Grove, W.Va., and was an Army veteran who
fought during the Korean War from 1953-1955. He was a member of
Bellmead United Methodist Church, Point Pleasant, W.Va., of the
Minturn Lodge AF & AM Lodge #19, Point Pleasant, W.Va., and
American Legion Post 23, Point Pleasant, W.Va. He was a board
member of the West Virginia State Farm Museum, Mason County, W.Va.,
was a senior officer of the Twin Oaks Credit Union, Apple Grove,
W.Va.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother,
Cecil Bailes and sisters, Norma Billingsley, Bessies Hoon, Jerrie
Ogden and Opal Forbis.
He is survived by his wife, Sandie Rainey Bailes of Point Pleasant,
W.Va.; daughter and son-in-law, Shani and Greg Hill of Point Pleasant,

had taught elementary school for 47 years. She was a member of
the Trinity United Methodist Church in Point Pleasant, and the
Dorcas-Rebecca Circle.
She was a graduate of Point Pleasant High School, attended Marshall
(College) University, Huntington, and was a graduate of Morris
Harvey College in Charleston.
Born February 10, 1906 in Pliny, she was a daughter of the late
George W and Virginia L "Jennie" (Hannis) Adams.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by
her husband, Lewis Ball; a brother, Clyde F Adams; and a niece,
Susie Adams.
She is survived by a niece, Genevieve Smalley of Point Pleasant;
two nephews, Chester Adams of Kenosha, Wisconsin, and Curtis Adams
of Oxford, Indiana; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Wallace Adams of
Oxford, Indiana; several cousins; and many friends.

Point Pleasant, died Tuesday, October 1, 2002, at Holzer Medical
Center.
Mr. Bennett was born January 31, 1945, in Gallipolis, Ohio, to
the late Clyde E. "Shortie" and Melva Watson Bennett.
He was a retired coal miner.
He is survived by a daughter, Christi A. Bennett McGuire of Gallipolis;
three sons, Mark F. Bennett of Gallipolis, Gunnery Sergeant Rocky
D. (Jodi) Bennett of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and Saul D.
Bennett of Gallipolis; a very special friend, June Roberts and

He was preceded in death by his parents and his former wife, Judy

Born September 25, 1924 in Cumberland, Md., he was a son of the
late George Augustus and Edna Marie (Spicer) Biggs.
He was a United States Postal employee, serving as Postmaster
at the Point Pleasant Post Office from 1968 until present. He
was also the owner of the former Biggs Department Store, Point
Pleasant; a US Army veteran, serving during World War II; a member
of the Board of Directors of Pleasant Valley Hospital; a member
of the International Order of the Odd Fellows Lodge 33, Point
Pleasant; the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 731, Point Pleasant;
the Point Pleasant Kiwanis Club; the American Legion, Mason County
Post 23, Point Pleasant; the Minturn Lodge 19, AF&AM, Point
Pleasant; and was involved in many community projects.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother,
John Biggs.
He is survived by his wife, Judith "Judy" G (Jones)
Biggs; daughter and son-in-law, Valerie and Tony Arozarena of
Middletown, Ohio; sons and daughter-in-law, Keith Biggs of Point

Born on Dec. 2, 1920, to the late Theodore Franklin Boyce and
Nora Elaine (Laxton) Boyce, he was preceded in death by his first
wife Ruth (Doolittle) Boyce and his second wife Opal (Cheesebrew)
Boyce.
He was a US Army veteran serving in World War II and a member
of the IBEW Local No. 317 in Huntington. He attended Wesleyan
Church in Point Pleasant.
He is survived by three daughters, Alice (Jim-deceased) Way of
Waverly, Ohio, Velvet (Dale) Jackson of Gallipolis, Ohio, and

BELLEVIEW, Fla - Rolande Brown, formerly of New Haven, West
Virginia, lost her battle with lung disease on Friday, December
20, 2002.
A loving mother and friend, she will be missed deeply by all who
knew her as she touched the lives of many.
She was born November 25, 1925, in Lewiston, Maine.
She married Donald Brown in September 1944, and together they
retired to Florida in 1984 until his death in April 1986.
She later married Reidar Lund and had several happy years until
his death in November 2000. She loved everything about Florida,
including her dog, Bambi.
She is survived by sisters, Mary Rose Holcomb and Rita Goulet;
son, Donald Brown Jr., and wife, Karen, of Columbus, Ohio; daughters,
Brenda Clatwoethy of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Libby Dudding

Zeke was a master maintenance worker for Central Operating Company
in New Haven.
He was a Korean War Army veteran.

Ferry, died Wednesday, October 2, 2002, at his residence.
He was born September 18, 1917, in Hogsett, son of the late John
Bush and Louella Leonard Bush.
He was a pastor at Pleasant View Church for 29 years, and had
been a minister for 44 years. He was a carpenter by trade.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first
wife, Nora E Bush, on October 4, 2000; a granddaughter, Teresa

Harold A. Carder, 91, of Route 1, Letart Road, Point Pleasant,
died Tuesday morning, Sept. 3, 2002, at Pleasant Valley Hospital,
Point Pleasant. He was a retired maintenance worker for the Mason
County Board of Education. Harold was a Christian. He was born
July 29, 1911, in Mason County, W.Va. He was a son of the late
George and Ella (Rice) Carder. In addition to his parents, he
was preceded in death by his wife, Olive H. (Hogg) Carder; a sister,
Senna Rodgers; and two brothers, Herman and Howard Carder.
He is survived by a daughter, Patricia Carder Carney of Charleston,
W.Va.; two grandsons, William and Robert Carney; six great-grandchildren,
William Joseph, Jason, James, Jennifer, Megan, and Elizabeth Carney;
and a great-great-grandson, Derek Carney; a sister, Edna Zakaski
of Sissonville; two brothers, Clifford Carder of Point Pleasant,
and George Carder of Silver Springs, Md; and several nieces and
nephews.
Funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 6, 2002,
at the Crow-Hussell Funeral Home in Point Pleasant, with Louis
A. "Andy" Hussell Jr., officiating. Burial will follow
in Kirkland Memorial Gardens near Point Pleasant. Visitation will
be held at the funeral home, Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, from 6 to
8 p.m.

Saturday, February 16, 2002 at her home.
Born May 5, 1918 in Arlee, a daughter of the late Harry Monroe
and Frona Siders Nibert, she was a homemaker, former Pastor of
Wyoma Pentecostal Church, and a member of the North Apostolic
Tabernacle, Columbus, Ohio.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband,
Lloyd Rexall Carlyle Sr.; brother, Theodore Nibert; and sisters,
Audrey Lee, Sylvia Austin and Lydia Roush.
She is survived by her daughter, Juanita Williams of Columbus,
Ohio; son Lloyd "Rex" Rexall Carlyle Jr. of Westerville,
Ohio; sisters, Anna Henry of Gallipolis Derry and Betty Jordan
of Columbus, Ohio; brother, Harry Nibert Jr. of Jenkins, Ky.;
six grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 pm Wednesday at Wyoma Pentecostal Church with
Pastor David Wedlund and Reverend Roger Bonecutter officiating.
Burial will be at Wyoma Cemetery, Gallipolis Ferry.

Ohio formerly of Mason Died Saturday, Oct. 5 at Arlington Court
Nursing Center Upper Arlington, Ohio.
Born Dec. 25, 1929 in Charleston, W.Va., she was the daughter
of the late Irving Karr Jr. and Virginia Hodge Karr. She was a
graduate of Pomeroy High School, attended Western College for
woman (sic) in Oxford Ohio and Ohio University.
She was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary E Carsey and Sarah (Dr.
Seven L.) Carsey Walker; grandchildren, Kelly Elizabeth Walker
and Robert Isom Walker all of Upper Arlington; two nieces Barbara
Morgan, Charleston, Jane Grady Cross Lanes, W.Va.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Fred R Carsey
D.D.S. in 1994.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 1:30 pm in

LEON - Donald D Casto, 66, of Leon, died Sunday, May 5, 2002,
at Holzer Medical Center, Gallipolis, Ohio. He was a son of the
late Fred and Hazel Hulbert Casto. He was a retired operator for
AVTEX fibers, Nitro and a farmer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister,
Norma Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Coleman Casto; children, Berry
Matheny of Leon and Ronald Casto of Red House; three grandchildren;
one great-granddaughter; brothers, Arden and Fredrick Casto of
Buffalo; sisters, Doris Jividen of Wheelersburg, Ohio; and several
nieces and nephews.

SOUTHSIDE - Dana "Danny" W Chapman, 51, of Southside,
was killed January 26, 2002, in an auto accident. He was born
November 27, 1950 in Mason County, to the late Charlie and Till
Duncan Chapman. He was a truck driver for Valley Brook Concrete
Company and an avid bow hunter.
He is preceded in death by two half-brothers, Edward Duncan and
Buddy Chapman.
He is survived by his wife, Genevieve Shuler Chapman; sons and
daughter-in-law, Dana Lee and Kendra Chapman of Southside, and
Charles "Chuckie" and Keri Chapman of Point Pleasant;

Born April 4, 1918 in Mason County, he was a son of the late Lew
and Mamie (Morrison) Clendenin. He was a welder in Local 798,
Pipeliners, in Tulsa, Okla.; attended St. Paul United Methodist
Church in Point Pleasant; was a member of the Minturn Lodge 19
AF&AM, in Point Pleasant, the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry
32, Charleston; a member of the Point Pleasant Chapter, Sons of
the American Revolution; and had been in the Civilian Conservation
Corps. of Nevada.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son,
George Michael "Mike" Clendenin.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Gertrude (Lucas) Clendenin;
sons and daughters-in-law, James and Toni Clendenin of South Charleston
and Charles and Audrey Smith Clendenin of New Richmond, Ohio;
eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

8.

February 4, 2002, at her residence.
She was a native of Point Pleasant and a graduate of Ohio State
University where she received her nursing degree. She worked as
a public health nurse and later became a private duty nurse.
She was a member of the Ginter Park United Methodist Church where
she was the former secretary of the administrative board; member
of the AAUW and AARP.
She is survived by step-daughter Frances C Beals of Edgefield,
S.C.; nephews Edward Dodd of Port Charlotte, FL, John Caudill,
Olan Blaine, Harold Blain and Jimmy Blain, all of Point Pleasant;
and niece Bonnie Alley of Point Pleasant.

of the late John Alexander and Sarah Frances (Craig) Taylor.
She was a homemaker and a member of Jordan Baptist Church in Gallipolis
Ferry; an honorary member of the Point Pleasant Women's Club;
a member and long time Chaplain of the Order of the Eastern Star,
Point Pleasant Chapter 75; she had served as the worthy advisor
for the Rainbow Girls in Point Pleasant; am member of the Lafayette
White Shrine in Gallipolis, Ohio; a member of the Rebecca's in
Rainelle. W. Va., where she had held the highest office in the
lodge.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by
her husband, Emmett R Collins, who passed in 1976; her sister,
Mary Thompson; and brothers, James Taylor, Jack Taylor, Clifford
Taylor and John Alex Taylor, Jr.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Blanche and
Harry Siders and Pauline and John Krimm, all of Gallipolis Ferry,

a homemaker and an ordained minister in the Gospel Tabernacle
Association, Inc.

brothers and a sister.

Cecil Derrick and Lucy Irene Martin. He was an Army veteran and
worked at KACC, in maintenance as a welder. He was also a member
of the United Steelworkers Local 5668 and American Legion Post
140, New Haven.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first
wife, Virginia Edith Derrick and sisters, Norma Ragan and Arbutus
"Boots" Bratton.

MIDDLEPORT, Ohio - Lester P. Dodson, 89, of Mason, died Friday,
June 14, 2002, at the Overbrook Center.
He was born May 10, 1913, in West Columbia, W.Va., a son of the
late Lewis P. and Hattie Orilla (Fowler) Dodson.
A retired carpenter, he was a member of the Carpenter Local No.
1159 in Point Pleasant and also attended the First Church of God
in New Haven.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters,
Laura A. Dunbar and Eleanor R. Ewing; and two brothers, Thomas
F. Dodson and Lewis M. Dodson.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley A. and
Robert H. Ball of Toledo, Ohio, and E. Jane and Lawrence A. Moore
of Mason; a son and daughter-in-law, Lewis P. and Margaret A Dodson
of Mason; one sister, Mabel L. Strayer of Vienna, W.Va.; two grandchildren;
and six great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted Monday, June 17, 2002, 1
p.m., at Kirkland Memorial Gardens in Point Pleasant with the
Rev. Robert H. Ball officiating.
There will be no visitation.

POINT PLEASANT - Frances Virginia (Machir) Dudding, 88, of
Point Pleasant, W.Va., and formerly of St. Albans, W.Va., died
Tuesday morning, April 16, 2002, at her home.
She was a homemaker and had formerly worked at the G.C. Murphy
Company, in Point Pleasant; she was a member of Heights United
Methodist Church in Point Pleasant, W.Va., and had attended St.
Mark's United Methodist Church in St. Albans. She was a member
of the Col. Charles Lewis Chapter, National Society of the Daughters
of the American Revolution.
Born June 8, 1913, in Point Pleasant, W.Va., she was a daughter
of the late Harry and Cyrena (Edwards) Machir.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by
her husband, George Axtell Dudding, who died April 27, 1994; one
sister Ida Faye Machir; and four brothers, Charles, Clifford,
Franklin, and Gilbert Machir.
She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Howard (Florence E.) Love
of Letart, W.Va.; a special friend, Haley Fields of Point Pleasant,
W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 11 am, Friday, April 19, 2002,
at the Crow-Hussell Funeral Home, Point Pleasant, W.Va., with
Dr Ben Stevens officiating. Burial will follow in Suncrest Cemetery,
Point Pleasant, W.Va.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home, Thursday, April 18,
2002, from 6 pm until 9 pm. ADAR memorial service will be held
at 6 pm the evening of visitation.

LEON - Clyde Junior Dunlap, 78, of Leon, W.Va., went to be with
the Lord, on Sunday evening, January 20, 2002, from the VA Medical
Center, in Huntington, W.Va., following a long illness.
He was a retired port engineer of G&C Towing. He was a good
Christian and a member of the Church of Christ in Christian Union
of Leon.
He was a longtime resident of Leon, W.Va.; and a US Army veteran
of World War II. Born February 7, 1923 in Ambrosia, W.Va., he
was a son of the late Elwell and Bertha (Huffman) Dunlap.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Ann Yvonne Dunlap;
two brothers, Orvin and Dencil Dunlap; and three sisters, Katherine
McDaniel, Fay Holcomb and Phyllis Leach.
Surviving are his wife, Anna G (Doss) Dunlap; two sons and daughter-in-law,
Clyde H "Buck" and Ruth Dunlap of Gallipolis, Ohio and
Phillip H Dunlap of Leon, W.Va.; four daughters and sons-in-law,
Barbara and Dennis Nealon of Valdosta, Georgia, Bernice and Keith
DeWeese, Anna and James Martin and Dorothy Dunlap, all of Leon,
W.Va.; a special loved one, Tim Roush of Point Pleasant, W.Va.;
a sister, Erma Rollins of Lorain, Ohio.
He was blessed with eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 2 pm Wednesday, January 23, 2002
at the Church of Christ in Christian Union in Leon, W.Va., with
Reverend Johnny Hayman and Reverend Pete Cobb officiating. Burial
will follow in the Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Crab Creek Road,
Gallipolis Ferry, W.Va., where military graveside rites will be
conducted by the American Legion Mason County Post 23.
Visitation will be held at the Crow-Hussell Funeral Home, Point
Pleasant on Tuesday, January 22, 2002, from 7-9 pm.

SPPRINGFIELD - Kenneth Leroy Durst, Sr., 78, of Springfield,
died Sunday, May 26, 2002, in Ohio Masonic Home. He was born October
12, 1923 in Leon, West Virginia, the son of Hershchel and Ruth
(Barnett) Durst.
Kenny moved to Springfield in 1951. He was a U.S. Army W.W.II
Veteran. He had worked as a machinist for Thompson Grinder for
21 years and Cascade Corporation for 10 years. He loved his family
and music.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Lillian Knapp Durst; daughters
and sons-in-law, Sandra and John Stalder of Springfield and Linda
and Bob Fuller of Conneaut, Ohio; sons and daughters-in-law, Homer
and Vera Durst of Springfield, Kenneth Jr. and Donna Durst of
Lexington, South Carolina, Paul and Glenda Durst and David and
Heather Durst all of Springfield; sisters and brothers-in-law,
Edna Huber of Springfield, Evelyn (Ed) Smith of Mt. Alto, West
Virginia, and Emma (Robert) Shirley of Leon, West Virginia; brothers
and sisters-in-law, Winfred Durst of Letart, West Virginia and
Floyd and Dorthleen Durst of Millwood, West Virginia; 15 grandchildren;
7 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Ruth Runyan
and Ella Knapp; brothers Herbert, Clyde, Ralph and William Durst.
A gathering of family and friends will be held Wednesday from
5-8 in the Littleton and Rue Funeral Home, Springfield. Funeral
services will be held in the funeral home Thursday at 11:00 a.m.
with Reverend Russell Dickerson officiating. Burial will be in

LEON - Reverend Kenneth Wayne Durst, 83, of Rt. 2 Leon, departed
this life, March 10, 2002 at his home, following an extended illness.
He was born August 26, 1918, in Cottageville, W.Va., a son of
the late Kinsy and Lydia (Hughes) Durst.
He was a retired railroad engineer and brakeman from Foote Mineral
Corporation with 29 years of service. He became an ordained minister
through the Church of Christ in Christian Union in 1952. He was
a former pastor in several churches, in Walton, Leon, and Bethel.
He retired from Gospel Lighthouse Church in Leon. He also served
as a volunteer for the Mount Flower Rescue Squad for nine years.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Daisy (McClure) Durst;
sons, Ronald Durst of Point Pleasant, and James Durst of Mount
Alto; daughters, Dorthy Click of Mount Alto, Lois Durst of Cottageville,
Lydia Stone of Point Pleasant; brothers, Carroll Durst of Point
Pleasant, and Glen Durst of Lancaster, Ohio; 14 grandchildren;
22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Sisters, Wilma Keefer and Garnett Ward preceded him in death.
Services will be 1 pm Thursday, March 13, 2002 at the Casto Funeral
Home, Evans, with the Reverend Herman Jordan officiating. Burial
will follow in the Forest Hill Cemetery, Leon.
Visitation will be from 6-9 pm Tuesday, March 12, 2002 and from
9 am until service time on Wednesday, at the funeral home.

Eleanor L Edwards, 67, of Hartford, died Monday, April 15,
2002, at Holzer Medical Center in Gallipolis, Ohio.
She was born March 10, 1935 in Hartford to the late Willie E and
Evelyn (Gibbs) Edwards. She was a nurse's aide at Holzer Medical
Center.
She is survived by her sister Carol (Jim) Will if (sic) Pomeroy,
Ohio; brothers John (Bonny) Edwards of Mason, Larry (Margaret)
Edwards of Rutland, Ohio, Darrell (Donna) Edwards of New Haven,
Glen (Edwina) Edwards of Clifton, Ralph (Janet) Edwards of Cottageville,
Wayne (Crystal) Edwards of Hartford; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers _______Edwards,
Bernard Edwards and Marvin R Edwards.
Services are at 1 pm Thursday at Foglesong-Tucker Funeral Home
in Mason with Rev. Emmett Rawson officiating. Burial _______ at

RIPLEY - Leota (Miller) Edwards, 81, of Ripley, departed this
life, Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, following an extended illness, at
the home of her sister, Virginia Hess of Leon.
She was born May 1, 1921, in Leon, a daughter of the late Hollie
F and Elzina (Cain) Miller.
She was a former employee of Union Carbide of Charleston, and
was a member of the Ripley Tabernacle Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Seymour Edwards.
Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, November 28, 2002, at the Casto
Funeral Home, Evans, with the Rev Jasper Herdman and Pastor Mark
Siers officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery,

SOUTHSIDE - Lloyd O Erwin, 80, of Southside, died Thursday,
May 16, 2002 at his home. Born March 16, 1922 in Putnam County,
he was a son of the late Byron A and Retha J (Hodges) Erwin.
He was a retired farmer and was a member of the Point Pleasant
Moose Lodge.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers,
Cline and Howard Erwin, and sister, Ernestine Whittington.
He is survived by his wife, Martha (Johnson) Erwin of Southside;
daughter and son-in-law, Ronna and Lawrence Wood of Gallipolis,
Ohio; two grandsons; one great granddaughter; sisters, Maxine
Learly of Leon, Freda Roach of Friendly, and Hazel Doss of Niles,
Ohio; and brother, Okey Erwin of Point Pleasant.
The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, at Concord Baptist
Church with Reverend Fred McCallister officiating. Burial will
be at Concord Cemetery, Henderson.

POINT PLEASANT - Karen Matthews Davis Fierbaugh, 64, of Point
Pleasant, W.Va., died Thursday morning, April 17, 2002, at St
Mary's Hospital, in Huntington, W.Va.
She was a retired employee of Somerville's State Farm Insurance
Agency in Point Pleasant, W.Va. She was a member of St. Paul Methodist
Church in Point Pleasant, W.Va., and had been a volunteer at Pleasant
Valley Hospital.
Born December 2, 1937, in Charleston, W.Va., she was a daughter
of the late Oliver Bruce and Archetta (Matthews) Davis.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by
her step-mother, Dorothy Pratt Davis.
She is survived by her husband, John J "Joe" Fierbaugh;
two daughters and son-in-law, Tandy Fierbaugh of Huntington, W.Va.,
and Jennifer and Don Westfall of Point Pleasant, W.Va.; one sister,
Ann "Snooks" Woolwine of Garland, Texas; and two grandchildren,
Courtney Paige Westfall and Tyler Joseph Westfall.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 pm, Saturday, April 20,
2002, at the Crow-Hussell Funeral Home, in Point Pleasant, W.Va.,
with Reverend Nancy Mayes officiating.

POINT PLEASANT - Herman Fisher, 74, of Point Pleasant, died
Wednesday, October 30, 2002, at Pleasant Valley Nursing and Rehab
Center.
He was born July 2, 1928, in Hurricane, West Virginia, the son
of William and Dora Sponaushe Fisher.
A farmer, he was U.S. Army veteran and a member of American Legion
Post No. 23 in Point Pleasant.
He is survived by three daughters, Becky (Don) Saxon of Gallipolis,
Ohio, Teresa Vreeland, of Gallipolis, and Anita Kayser of Ashburn,
North Carolina; two sisters, Doris (Larry) Bayes of Hamlin, and
Edna (Roger) Dilon of Milton; a brother, Herbert (Opal) Fisher
of Lesage; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; several
nieces and nephews; and special friend, Johnie Blake of Point
Pleasant.
Hw is preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Richard
Sponaushe, Carroll Fisher, Jim Fisher and Harvey Fisher; and two
sisters, Mary Fisher and Lorene LeMunyon.
Memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November
2, 2002 with Pastor Don Saxon at Deal Funeral Home. The family
will receive friends one hour prior to the memorial service. Flag
presentation will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 23.
Burial will follow at the convenience of the family.

John F Foreman, 76, of Columbus, Ohio, died Tuesday, Sept.
3, 2002, at Sunrise on the Scioto, in Columbus. John was a retired
U.S. Postal Inspector in Columbus and a U.S. Army Veteran of World
War II. He was born January 15, 1926 in Point Pleasant. He was
a son of the late William W. and Ada (Plants) Foreman. He was
also preceded in death by three brothers, William O., Byron, and
Ellsworth Foreman. John is survived by a sister, Gladys L. Daughertry
of Columbus.
Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002,
at the Crow-Hussell Funeral Home, Point Pleasant. Burial will
follow in the Greer Cemetery, Point Pleasant. Visitation will
be held one hour prior to the funeral service.

LAKIN-Edward Lucius Foster, 77, died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002,
in Cabell Huntington Hospital, Huntington.
Born Feb.19, 1925, in Kanawha County, son of the late Lucius and
Carrie Garrett Foster, he was a general laborer.
Surviving are a sister, Mary Burkett of Pittsburgh, Pa; and a
brother, Robert Foster.
Services will be 10 am Wednesday in Lakin Chapel, with pastor
Greg Collins officiating. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery. There
will be no visitation. Arrangements are by Wilcoxen Funeral Home,
Point Pleasant.
