Gerlach, Mary Kathryn Boggess
Point Pleasant Register, Point Pleasant, WV
February 2002
POINT PLEASANT - Mary Kathryn Boggess Gerlach, born April 23,
1909, departed this life Wednesday, February 20, after a long
battle with depressive-dementia which began with the death of
her son, Lawrence Roy Gerlach, Jr., in 1974. Immediate cause of
death was pneumonia.
Mr. Gerlach grew up on a farm in the Flatrock area of Mason County
where she was often seen bounding through the hills and fields
on horseback, side-by-side with a girlhood friend, Ms. Gertrude
Selby Smith, who passed away shortly before Ms. Gerlach's death.
Ms. Gerlach and her husband, Lawrence Roy Gerlach, Sr., shared
the ownership and management of the Quality Manufacturing Company,
Manufactures of Women's Dresses and Sportswear in Point Pleasant.
In later years, they were joined in the business by their two
sons. Over a period of time, just short of 50 years, the Quality
Manufacturing Company provided employment for 80 to 100 women
in the Point Pleasant area at any given time. During World War
II, defense contracts with the government provided for the expansion
of the force to include a special unit of Afro-American women
from West Virginia and Ohio, giving them an opportunity to participate
in the war effort.
Ms. Gerlach was a member of Main Street Baptist Church where she
taught Sunday School. She was the daughter of John W. Boggess
and Blanche Greer Boggess, who preceded her in death. She was
also preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Roy Gerlach, Sr.;
a son and daughter-in-law, Lawrence Roy, Jr. and Mabel Gerlach
Jamison; a sister, Sybil Hooper; two brothers, Glen and Sidney
Boggess; and a son-in-law, Dr. Geroge J. Wischner.
Ms. Gerlach is survived by one daughter, Mary Ellen Gerlach-Wischner
of Point Pleasant, and a son and daughter-in-law, Mr. And Ms.
O.F. Gerlach of Terra Alta, W.Va. She is also survived by her
grandson and his wife, Michael and Beverly Carder, who were her
devoted primary caregivers during the last decade of her life.
Other survivors include a second grandson, John Gerlach; seven
granddaughters, Carol, Cathy, Jennifer, Linda, Kimberly, Mary,
and Stephanie; 16 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
A private memorial service and celebration of Ms. Gerlach's life
took place Saturday, February 23, at Suncrest Cemetery with Rev.
Frank Frye officiating. The celebration included comforting and
inspiring words from Rev. Frye, a group poetry reading, and special
vocal selections sung by Ms. Lilly Faye Lanham. At the close of
the service, a bevy of colorful balloons was released into the
sky in memory of deceased family members, followed by the release
of a single pink balloon in final tribute to Ms. Gerlach, who
is indeed, free at last.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Wilcoxen Funeral
Home.
