POINT PLEASANT - Jewel Ora Sall, 91, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, at Pleasant Valley Hospital. Jewel was a homemaker. She was born January 10, 1911 in Missouri.
Jewel was preceded in death by her husband, Edwart T Sall, and one son, Lewis Sall.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Dr. Randall Taylor of Point Pleasant; one sister, Myrtle Grey of Modesto, Calif.; three brothers, Jack Masengale of Fontana, Calif.; Charles Masengale of Modesto, Calif.; and Thomas Masengale of Bakersfield, Calif.
Jewel had three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A private funeral service is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002, at Wilcoxen Funeral Home with the Rev. Marshall Bonecutter officiating. There are no calling hours. Burial will be in the Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Colorado Springs, Colo.

MASON - Charles K "Buddy" Sayre, 59, of Mason, W.Va., died Thursday, April 4, 2002, at Pleasant Valley Hospital.
He was born December 3, 1942, in Point Pleasant, W.Va., a son of Ruby (Holcomb) Allinder and the late Charles K Sayre. He was a retired boilermaker of Local 667.
In addition to his mother, Ruby Allinder of Point Pleasant, W.Va., he is survived by his daughter, Risa L Sayre of Mason, W.Va.; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael J and Allison Sayre of West Columbia, W.Va., and James Kelly and Angela Sayre of Burlington, N.Ca.; sister and brother-in-law, Connie and Jim Rohr of Point Pleasant, W.Va.; brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Marie Edwards of Point Pleasant, W.Va.; several nieces and nephews; grandchildren, Ashley N Sayre and Krista D Sayre; and step-granddaughter, Whitnee M Marks.
Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Friends may call from 6-8 pm Saturday, April 6, 2002, at Foglesong-Tucker Funeral Home, Mason.

POINT PLEASANT - Junior Basil "Junnie" Sayre, 70, of Point Pleasant, formerly of Buzzard Road, Mason County, passed away Sunday, December 1, 2002, at Pleasant Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Point Pleasant, following a long illness.
He was a member of the Addison Baptist Church, in Addison, Ohio, and was preceded in death by his parents, George E and Mary Grimes Sayre, four brothers, and two sisters. He loved singing in church and he loved the Lord.
Survivors include several nieces, nephews and cousins, and special friend, James Wamsley of Leon.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, December 4, 2002, at Raynes Funeral Home in Buffalo, with Pastor Rick Barcus officiating. Burial will be at Buffalo Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. today, Tuesday, December 3, 2002.

LETART - Mary Opal Sayre, 91, of Letart, West Virginia, died Saturday, November 9, 2002, at Pleasant Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. A homemaker, she also played the accordion in area churches and nursing homes and had a radio program in Ravenswood, West Virginia several years ago.
She was born April 13, 1911 in Letart, West Virginia, to Alonzo and Hannah (Hoffman) Thompson, who preceded her in death.
Her husband, Dallas Edward Sayre also preceded her in death on March 6, 1984.
She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Arlene and George Grimm of Letart; Geraldine "Geri" Hill of Point Pleasant; one son and a daughter-in-law, Thomas L. and Louease Sayre; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three step-great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Delton Sayre; a sister, Lola Boston; brothers, Ray, Leo and Garold Thompson; and a great-granddaughter, Charley Hill.
Funeral services will be held at 1 pm, Tuesday, November 12, 2002, at the Wilcoxen Funeral Home in Point Pleasant. The Rev. Herman Jordan and the Rev. Joe Hammack will officiate. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Letart.

Carl Andrew "Sonny" Simpkins, 60, of Point Pleasant, died on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, as the result of an auto accident.
Born to Carl W and Zelda Simpkins on June 5, 1941, he was employed as a river boat captain with AEP River Transporatation. He attended the Church of God in Point Pleasant.
He was preceded in death by paternal grandparents Carl C and Verna Simpkins Doss: maternal grandparents Earnest and Edna Fetty; brother-in-law Harold Stewart.

MARIETTA - Marjorie Anne Shimp, 67, of Route 6, Marietta, Ohio, died at 1:07 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at Selby General Hospital.
She was born October 16, 1934, at Gallipolis Ferry, W.Va., to Howard and Maxine Mink Conley. She was a service representative for Ohio Bell Telephone Company for 18 years. She then was a sales associate in real estate for Cranston Real Estate and Jim Christy Realtors.
She was active in community groups while residing in Gallipolis including serving as President of the Business and Professional Women's Club. While residing in Marietta, she was a member of the Marietta Welfare League, Salvation Army Advisory Board, Betsey Mills Club, Meals on Wheels and League of Women Voters. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing bridge and entertaining her friends.
She is survived by her husband, Emerson Ray Shimp, whom she married on Aug. 20, 1967; one daughter, Misty Anne Shimp and her fiancé, Kevin Cartright, of Columbus, Ohio; one son, David Emerson Shimp and his wife Michele of Columbus, Indiana, one granddaughter, Monica and one grandson Christopher both of Columbus, Indiana; and special friend, Michael Kirl of Marietta.
Also surviving are her sisters Jean Davidson and Jackie Hughes of Gallipolis and brothers William Conley and his wife Vivian of Gallipolis, Harland (Chick) Conley of Gallipolis and Paul Conley of Marion, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by her son, Richard Keith Shimp and her parents.
Services will be held on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Christ United Methodist Church with Reverend Charles Martindell officiating. Burial will be on Monday at 10:00 a.m. in Mound Cemetery. Friends may call beginning Saturday morning at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home and family will greet friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday and one hour prior to the service on Sunday. WESTERVILLE, Ohio - Mildred Jean Smeltzer, 58, of Westerville, Ohio, died Friday, February 1, 2002, at James Cancer Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.
Born December 30, 1943 in Hartford, W.Va., she was the daughter of Dorothy Lee Oliver and the late Charles W Warth, Sr.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a grandmother, Hilda Warth.
Survivors include her mother; two sons, Joseph Dean Smeltzer and Daniel Ray Smeltzer, both of Columbus; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Charles William Jr. and Cherie Warth, of Pomeroy, and Anthony Wayne Warth of Lakin; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Ann Iola and Charles Collins of Reedsville, and Darra and Joe Oliver of Coalton, Ohio; three grandchildren, Desiree Ann, and Clayton and Kyle Sines, New Haven; several nieces and nephews; and many close friends in Columbus as well as in this area.

CLIFTON - Agnes Virginia Smith, 85, of Clifton, died Friday, February 1, 2002, at Veterans Memorial Extended Care in Pomeroy. She was a homemaker.
Born January 22, 1917, in Mason, she was the daughter of the late Eli and Dora Birchfield.
In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband, Harold E Smith; one grandson; four brothers; and one sister.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Sharon Meadows, and brothers, Harry, Bill, and Harley Smith.

He was a retired pipefitter, a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam conflict, a member of the American Legion, Smith-Capehart Post No. 140, a member of the Harmony Baptist Church in Southside, and a member of the Moose Lodge No. 565 in Nitro.
He was a 1967 graduate of Point Pleasant High School, a member of the West Virginia Auctioneers Association, and had been a former rodeo circuit rider.
He was born April 14, 1949, in South Charleston, West Virginia, son of the late John Everette "J.E." and Ilene L. (Smith) Sommer.
He is survived by a son, Brandon S. Sommer of Gallipolis, Ohio; a daughter, Anna, and son Matthew, both of Minnesota; his companion and Brandon's mother, Suzanne Hall of Gallipolis; one brother and sister-in-law, John E. and Elizabeth Sommer of Delaware, Ohio; and several aunts and uncles.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, November 31, 2002, at the Crow-Hussell Funeral Home in Point Pleasant, with the Rev. Fred McCallister officiating. She was born August 3, 1909 in Mason County, the daughter of the late Fredrick and Hester (Baker) Fauver. She was a former employee of the Musselman Cannery in Martinsburg and a member of the Vanville Church of Christ in Vanville, W.Va.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Clarence Stanley; son Clarence Alvin Stanley; brothers Hollie Fauver and Raymond Fauver; sisters Iva Yauger, Ethel Sines, Clara Thomas, Velma Cooper, and Birdie Fisher.

POINT PLEASANT - Helen (Kay) Sterrett, 95, of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, died Monday afternoon, December 17, 2001, at Pleasant Valley Hospital in Point Pleasant.
Born May 3, 1906, in Kayford, West Virginia, she was a daughter of the late John and Elsie (Ewart) Kay.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Moore Sterrett; two sisters, Lucetta Harlass and Virginia Pollock; and three brothers, Robert, Walter and John A Kay.
She was a graduate of Point Pleasant High School and of Marshall University with a master's degree, where she was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta social sorority.
She was a member of the Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church, where she served several terms on the board of elders.
She was a retired teacher of the Mason County Board of Education, where she taught English and served as the head of the English department at Point Pleasant High School until her retirement.
She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma honorary teachers sorority and was active in the American Association of University Women.
She was an active member in the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution at local, state, and national levels.
Locally, she was a 50-year-plus member of the Colonel Charles Lewis Chapter NSDAR, where she held many offices, including Chapter Regent.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John K and Judy Jeffries Sterrett of Sarasota, Florida; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Kay Sterrett and Gregory S Leonard of Orlando, Florida; grandson, Jeffrey M Sterrett of Houston, Texas; great-grandson, John Alexander Leonard of Orlando, Florida; nephews, Henry and Ernest Kay, and their wives of Southside; several other nephews and nieces living out of the state; and a special friend, Mary Miller of Evans.
Services will be held at 11 am on Friday, December 21, 2001, at the Presbyterian Church at Eighth and Main streets, Point Pleasant, with the Rev. David Nash officiating.
Burial will follow in the Mountain View Cemetery in Charleston.

BELPRE, Ohio - Jennie Bell Siders Stewart, 84, of Belpre, formerly of Henderson, died Tuesday, November 12, 2002, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Parkersburg.
She was born March 23, 1918, in Mason County, a daughter of the late Robert Henry and Jennie B Willet Siders.
She was a member of the Gospel Tabernacle Church and the American Legion Auxiliary Post 23 of Point Pleasant. She was a former Henderson train-depot mail carrier and substitute postmaster, housecleaner, babysitter and caregiver.
She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Jennie Ellen and Wilbur Jordan of Gallipolis Ferry, and Mary F and Al Poling, with whom she made her home; son, Charles Stewart of Gallipolis Ferry; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Angie Stewart of Southside; grandchildren, Nancy and Jessica Jordan, C R and Michael Stewart and Amber Stewart; Step-grandsons, Timmy Stamper and Chris Casey; great-grandchildren, Jordan Lee and Ashleigh Stewart; step-daughter and step-son-in-law, Ruth and Billy Blakenship of Oregon; step-son, Raymond Pulver of Missouri; and eight step-grandchildren and 12 step-great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by brother and sisters, Eli Siders, Hazel Siders and Ruby Huddleston, all of Henderson; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jessie and Harold Rulen of Hurricane, and Emma and Glenn McCarty of Point Pleasant; brother-in-law, Dan Bonecutter of Gallipolis Ferry; sister-in-law Evelyn Barnett of Miamisburg, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death on April 16, 1002 by her husband, James M Stewart, whom she married on July 3, 1946; and a son, James M Stewart, Jr on April 14, 2001; brothers, Robert H Siders Jr and Worthy Siders; and sisters Anna Frances Siders, Millie Bonecutter and Nannie Nibert.

She was born March 26, 1958, in Charleston, West Virginia, daughter of Ray Dawson and Billie Jean Burton Dawson.
She was a homemaker. She was a member of St Joseph Catholic Church, a 1976 graduate of Wahama High School, and a member of Stewart-Johnson VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

ATHENS, Ohio - Elsa Martha Stout, 94, Lindley Inn, The Plains, Ohio, died early Tuesday morning, Sept 17, 2002, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital. A former resident of Athens, she was born July 14, 1908, at Majestic, Ky., daughter of the late Charles and Rachel Reed Sigmon.
She grew up in southern West Virginia, having attended Allegheny Collegiate Institute and New River State College in W.Va. Early in life she was employed nine years as an employment counselor with the West Virginia Department of Employment Security in Point Pleasant, W. Va. Elsa then married the late Howard Stout and moved to Athens in 1951. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, the Athens Garden Club, and the Lydia Lash Evans Literary Club.
Surviving are daughters, Nancy V (Joseph) Tryon of Arlington, Va. and Martha V (John) Watterson of Apple Grove, W. John "Jack" T Tavan, 80, Galion, Ohio, died at his home on Friday, Sept 6, 2002.
Born in Omar, W.Va., August 24, 1922, he was the son of the late Joseph and Olive (Buskirk) Tavan. He married Mary Anne Jones on August 7, 1953. They were married 46 years prior to her death on August 3, 1999.
Jack moved to Galion in 1952 to begin employment with the Galion Iron Works. In 1957, he began employment with General Motors Fischer Body, retiring in 1977. He was a World War II veteran of the United States Navy. He served in the Pacific Theater, along with his brothers Beckley and Joseph. Jack was a 40-year member of the Masonic Lodge 414 and Scottish Rite, Valley of Columbus. He also belonged to Aladdin Temple Shrine of Columbus. He was an avid gardener and horseshoe player, playing competitively for several years.
Jack is survived by a daughter and a son, Glenda (Tavan) Zeidan and John Tony Tavan, Jr.; a son-in-law, Dr. Frank Zeidan; a daughter-in-law, Mary (Wisler) Tavan; four grandchildren, Laura Zeidan, Jonathan Zeidan, Dominick Tavan, and Anthony Tavan, all living in California; two brothers, Beckley Tavan of Galion, and Joseph Tavan of Apple Grove, W.Va.; one sister, Rosalie Rood of Grove City, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by sisters, Mary Montcastle, Virginia Aten, and infant sister, Pauline.

Born August 2, 1928, in Newport, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Lloyd and Mary Matheny Harris.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John R Towner, on January 20, 1998; and several brothers and sisters.
She was a member of Heights United Methodist Church, where she had served on the board of trustees and the administrative board. She was a 1946 graduate of South Charleston High School.
She was active in the Black Diamond Council of Girl Scouts for more than 40 years, serving as a former state region director as well as Mason County director.
Survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, Charles M and Frances A Towner of Point Pleasant, and John R Towner, Jr of Parkersburg; one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia A and Melvin Ross of Point Pleasant; five grandchildren, Charles M Towner Jr, Andrew J Towner, Brian K Ross, Stephanie Ross and Melanie Ross Sang; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Ted Harris of Lakeland, Florida; and a sister, Ruth Harris Roberts of Barboursville.

SOUTHSIDE - Charles Andrew 'Tinker' Wallis, 53, of Southside, died Sunday, November 10, 2002 at his home.
He was born December 30, 1948 in Point Pleasant, a son of Audrey J Smith of Russell, Kentucky and the late Alden R Wallis. He was a member of Faith Gospel Church in Gallipolis Ferry.
He is survived by two brothers, Roger Wallis, of Southside and William 'Bill' Wallis of Louisa, Kentucky; two sisters, Jane Bradley of Gallipolis and Cheryl Richardson of Moreno Valley, California; an uncle, Jake Wallis, of Point Pleasant; five nephews; four nieces; one great niece; one great nephew; and several special loved ones.

Edna was born July 27, 1912, at Gibbstown, W.Va., daughter of the late Samuel Jacob Roach and Olivia Jane Gibbs Roach.

She was born February 26, 1937 in Dunbar, daughter of the late Clarence Russell and Velma M (Hussell) Oshel.
She was a home care provider, working in many different homes. She had also been employed at Johnson's Supermarket and had attended the Church of Christ in Christian Union in Point Pleasant.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by one son, Larry Wandling.
Survivors include a son, Terry Morgan Wandling of Point Pleasant; a daughter and son-in-law, Connie Yvonne and Ronnie Byus of Leon; five grandchildren, Penny Byus, Christina Logan, Becky Wandling, Kaylee Wandling, and Terah Wandling; two great-grandchildren, Haley Woyan and Bryson Logan; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Carolyn and Johnny Glover and Catherine "Babe" (Senneth) Wandling, all of Point Pleasant; one brother and sister-in-law, Clarence R and Donna Oshel of Point Pleasant; and two special aunts, Katherine Abby Terry of Point Pleasant, and Edna (Charles A) Taylor of Greensboro, Md.

SUMMERVILE, S.C. - Michael Stephen Ward Sr., 51, Summerville, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at Fort Sanders Sevier Medical Center, Sevierville, Tenn.
Born March 6, 1950, in Huntington, W.Va., he was the son of Don and Mary (Fannin) Ward of Point Pleasant.
He was a graduate of Point Pleasant High School, Class of 1968, attended United Electronics Institute in Charleston, and Cabell County Career Center in Huntington, was formerly employed by Kaiser Aluminum of Ravenswood, and had served as a corrections officer for Lieber Correctional Institution since August 1987.
He was a sergeant in the US Air Force and served during the Vietnam War. He also held a membership in the Egeria Masonic Lodge 71, Harleyville, S.C., and Point Pleasant EMS; served on the advisory board of Arc-en-Ciel Rainbow Assembly, Harleyville; and was a Masters of Grand Cross of Color.
He was preceded in death by a son, Donald Paul Ward.
Surviving in addition to his parents are his fiancée, Rebecca Diane Stein of Seymour, Tenn.; a son, Michael Stephen Ward Jr. of Summerville; a daughter and son-in-law, Aubrey R and Scott Thielbar of Rock Hill, S.C.; a sister, Leslie Ann Martin of Proctorville, Ohio; a brother, Gregory Edward Ward of Proctorville, Ohio; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
Graveside services will be 2:30 pm Thursday, January 3, 2002, at Kirkland Memorial Gardens, with the Rev Larry Albright officiating.
Graveside rites will be performed by American Legion Post 23 of Point Pleasant.

LETART - Warren E. "Gene" Weaver, 67, Letart, W.Va., died at his residence Friday, Sept 13, 2002.
He was born March 28, 1935, in Illinois to the late Hobart R and Ruie Louise (Roush) Weaver.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Tryon and three brothers, Leland, Lavern and Foster Weaver.
He is survived by wife, Sherry Weaver of Letart; step-daughter, Tina Winnings of South Charleston; and step-son, Russell Neutzing of St. Petersburg, Fla.; sister, Leona Cruey of Hawthorn, Fla.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert S and Aleta Weaver of New Haven; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
He attended Middleport First Baptist Church, was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, a Point Pleasant Loyal Order of the Moose #731 member, a Broad Run Rod and Gun Club member and an Honorable Order of the Kentucky Colonels member.
Services will be conducted by the Rev. mark Morrow at the Foglesong-Tucker Funeral Home in Mason at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16, 2002. Visitors may call from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Interment will be at the Broad Run Cemetery in Letart.

LEON - Bruce W Weikle, 51, Leon, formerly of Seattle, Washington, died Saturday, November 9, 2002 at his residence.
He was born February 25, 1951, in Mason County, the son of Wesley U Weikle and Ada Greenlee.
He was a retired secretary for University Cancer Center of Seattle. He was a veteran of the US Air Force.

LEON-Delmer Cicero "Dellie" Wheeler, 82, of Leon, went to be with his Lord and Savior, August 20, 2002, due to injuries received in an accident on State Route 87 near his home.
He was born January 14, 1920, in Leon, a son of the late Elmer DeValcore and Alzina Jane (King) Wheeler.
He was a 1938 graduate of Point Pleasant High School, and attended Marshall College. He was a former owner and operator of Wheeler's General Store, Leon, and spent many years in the pulp wood industry.
He was a farmer and attended the Baden Presbyterian Church.
Dellie will be sadly missed by all of those who have been touched by his life.
Survivors included his wife, Iva Mae (Keefer) Wheeler; son, Delmer Dale Wheeler of Leon; daughter, Gwendolyn Rose Young of Columbus, Ohio; sister, Mary Rayburn of Point Pleasant; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; step-sons, Alex Schultz of Point Pleasant, and Daniel Schultz of Leon; stepdaughters, Connie McCarty of Point Pleasant, and Treva Clutter and Angela Shirley, both of Leon; and several step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Vickie N Wheeler; brothers, Frank, Henry, Cleon, Earl, and Fredrick; and sisters, Sarah Alice Boggs, Dicie Pearl McKinney, Gladys Wheeler, Nellie Wheeler, and Grace DeVault.
The funeral service will be 2 pm Friday, August 23, 2002, at Casto Funeral Home, Evans, with the Rev Herman Jordan and the Rev Johnny Haymon officiating. Burial will follow in the Creston Cemetery, Evans. Visitation will be from 5-8 pm Thursday, August 22, 2002, at the funeral home.

Born March 14, 1910 in Letart, daughter of the late Leonso and Cora Shanes McNickle, she was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clifton and attended the United Methodist Church in New Haven.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Llewellyn "Bill" Williams; brothers, Rush, Melvin, Marshall and George McNickle; sisters, Adith Sayre, Belle Wolfe, Minnie Sayre, Lillian Bumgarner, Jennie Riley and Leona Dudding; sister-in-law, Clara Williams; and brother-in-law, Lloyd Williams.

BIDWELL - Loretta L Wright, 64, passed away Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, in the Pleasant Valley Hospital following an extended illness. She was a resident of Holzer Senior Care Center.
She was born Feb. 19, 1938, in Wharton, W.Va. She is the daughter of the late Hansford and Ollie McDavid. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Henderson, W.Va.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Wright, on April 3, 1997, and one daughter, Teresa Edwards, and two sisters, Willis McDine and Shirley Bunch.
