POINT PLEASANT - Donald Gabritsch of Point Pleasant, West Virginia,
died in his home Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at the age of 69,
He was retired from Century Aluminum, Ravenswood, West Virginia,
where he worked as a cold roller.
He was a U S Army veteran of the Korean War, a member of the American
legion Post No. 23, Point Pleasant, the United Steel Workers Union
No. 5668, Ravenswood, and the Masonic Lodge AF&AM No. 19,
Clifton, West Virginia.
Born May 26, 1933, in Kanawha County, West Virginia, he was the
son of the late Frank and Margarett Estapp Gabritsch. He was also
preceded in death by a son, Donald A Gabritsch.
He is survived by his wife, Alveta Castle Gabritsch of Point Pleasant;
two sons, Geoffrey A Gabritsch of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Darryl
A Gabritsch and his wife Barbara, of West End, North Carolina;
a stepson, Tim Click and his wife, Stephanie, of Point Pleasant;
a stepdaughter, Rhonda O'Neal and her husband Patrick of Kenova,
West Virginia; one sister, Mary Margarett Hutchinson of Handley,
West Virginia; and one brother Frank Gabritsch and his wife, Gladys,
of Hurricane, West Virginia.
There will be no funeral or visitation. Burial will take place
at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Deal Funeral Home
in Point Pleasant.

GALLIPOLIS - Elmer Gardner, 80, Gallipolis, Ohio passed away,
Wednesday, July 2, 2003 at Arbors of Gallipolis.
He was born April 7, 1923 in Mason County, W.Va., son of the late
George and Hattie Flint Gardner.
Elmer was a self-employed brick mason and also retired from Kaiser
Aluminum in 1983 following 15 years of service. He was a member
of VFW Post 4464 Gallipolis, American Legion Lafayette Post 27
Gallipolis, Gallipolis Elks Lodge 107, Loyal Order of Moose of
Point Pleasant, W.Va., United Steel Workers of America Local 5668
and a lifetime member of Kanauga Gun Club.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife,
Myrtle Fillilnger Gardner, one daughter, Barbara Samour, two sisters,
Dorothy Gibbs, Della Flora, one brother, Raymond Gardner and a
special friend, Sharon Cox.
He is survived by five sons; Robert E and Carol J Gardner of Cottageville,
W.Va., Lee and Ruth Gardner of Bidwell, Ohio, Tom Gardner of Vinton,
Ohio, Jack Gardner of Point Pleasant, W.Va., and Jeff and Pam
Gardner of Gallipolis, Ohio; one daughter, Mary and Warren Berry
of Gallipolis, Ohio; two brothers, Lawrence and Pat Gardner of
Nevada, Ohio and Hanley and Pat Gardner of Gallipolis, Ohio; four
sisters, Rose Cundy of Jackson, Ohio, Hattie Nibert, Sallie Kirby
both of Gallipolis, Ohio and Edna Gray of Virginia.
He is also survived by 23 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 6, 2003 in
the McCoy-Moore Funeral Home, Wetherholt Chapel, Gallipolis with
Pastor James Lewis officiating. Burial will follow in the Ohio
Valley Memory Gardens, Gallipolis. Full military graveside rites
will be conducted by Gallia County Veteran Organizations. Friends

LETART - Louise Kelsie Gibbs, 89, of Letart, West Virginia, went
to the (sic) be with the Lord on Sunday, June 8, 2003.
She was born October 11, 2923, at Broad Run, West Virginia, daughter
of the late Okey W. Roush and Alma Pickens Roush.
She was a homemaker, and was a member of the Broad Run United
Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband,
Dallas Patterson Gibbs; sisters, Eileen Roush, Elsie Lieving,
Estyl Clark, Eunice Hart, Freda Henry and Fannie Clark; brothers,
Hazen H. and Raymond Roush; and sons-in-law, Robert R. Hendrick
and Elson Long.
She is survived by a daughter, Janice M. Hendrick of Letart; a
daughter and son-in-law, Sandra A. and Charles Wise of Letart;
a son and daughter-in-law, Denver L. and Sharon Gibbs of Letart;
grandchildren, Timothy and Brenda Long of Mason, West Virginia,
Lisa and Tony Venoy of Pomeroy, Ohio, Rodney Long and his fiancée,
Lora of Gallipolis, Ohio, Donna and B.J. Leach of Letart, Rex
and Vikie Hendrick of Letart, Dwain and Aimee Hendrick of Letart,

LETART - Timothy John Gordon, 22, of Letart, West Virginia, died
Saturday, June 21, 2003, at Pleasant Valley Hospital.
He was born June 6, 1981, in Gallipolis, Ohio, son of John K Gordon
of Columbia, South Carolina, and Pamela Riggs Gordon of Letart.
He participated for many years in the Special Olympics, in which
he received numerous awards.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by sisters, Bobbi Jo
Gordon of Letart, and Kelly Ann Gordon of Letart; his grandmothers,
Delores Riggs of Letart, and Clara Jo Gordon of Letart; his grandfather,
John A Gordon of Letart; and aunts and uncles, Teresa and Zack
MacKnight of Letart, and David and Cindy Ross of Burlington, North
Carolina.
He is also survived by uncles, Jackie M Riggs of Letart, and Mike
Gordon of Letart; an aunt, Barb Gordon of Letart; a special friend,

Obituaries
Fred Johnson Green, 85, of Fraziers Bottom, West Virginia, died
Tuesday, October 21, 2003, at the Pleasant Valley Hospital in
Point Pleasant, West Virginia. He was born February 2, 1918, in
Upland, West Virginia, to the late James Beechem and Virginia
(Sowash) Green.
Fred was a member of the Mt Zion Baptist Church in Upland. He
had been a farmer his entire life, operating the Green Poultry
Farm in Upland for some 40 years and later raising beef cattle
at the family farm. Fred had served on the Mason County Fair Board
for many years as a director and one of the coordinators of the
Junior Livestock Sale. He was also a past member of the Mason
County Farm Bureau for over 60 years and the American Angus Association.
He was a graduate of Hannan High School.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Bernice Artis (Miller)
Green of Fraziers Bottom; two daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia
and Warren Cornell of Dunbar, West Virginia, and Betty and Pat
Smith of Huntington, West Virginia; three sons and dauthers-in-law,
James and Carolyn Green of Fraizers Bottom, Freddie and Tina Green
of Fraizers Bottom, and Richard and Alesia Green of Point Pleasant;
eight grandchildren, Beth Nunley, Lisa Pitchford, Kevin Cornell,
Amy Hughes, Jonathan Smith, David Smith, Jared Green and Tyler
Green; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three
brothers, Garrett Green, James Green and H Sinsell Green; and
one sister, Lilah G Green.
Funeral services will be 11 am Saturday, October 25, 2003, at
Mt Zion Baptist Church, Upland, with the Rev Charles Moses and
the Rev James Lewis officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt
Zion Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 pm Friday, October
24, 2003, at the Wilcoxen Funeral Home, Point Pleasant, and one
hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.

NEW HAVEN - Lillian Russell Greene of Hew Haven, West Virginia,
died in her home on Tuesday, May 13, 2003, at the age of 90.
She was born July 1, 1912, at Hawks Nest, West Virginia, the daughter
of the late David D Russell and the late Myrtle McGraw Russell.
She was a member of the St Paul Lutheran Church in New Haven.
Lillian was an avid golfer who was proud to the first honorary
lifetime member of the Riverside Ladies Golf Association.
She was a member of the New Haven Women's Club and the New Haven
Bridge Club. Lillian enjoyed attending the Kentucky Derby and
watching West Virginia University Football.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband,
Roba "RG" Greene; and one sister, April Nickel.
She is survived by a daughter, Karen Kay Greene of, New Haven;
a stepson, James A (Betty) Greene of Beckley, West Virginia; two

Stephens.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Grimes; sisters,

NEW HAVEN - Robert Ray Grimm, 63, of New Haven, West Virginia,
died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at the Charleston Area Medical Center,
Memorial Division, Charleston, West Virginia. He was retired from
Kaiser Aluminum where he worked as a crane operator. Robert graduated
in 1957 from Wahama High School.
Born November 1, 1939, at Broadrun, West Virginia, Robert was
a son of the late Homer and Ada Grimm Wears. He was also preceded
in death by three grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife Carolyn Skeens Grimm of New Haven; daughters
Belinda Ray Penddelton and Edith Grimm both of Bradbury, Ohio;

NEW HAVEN - Foster T. "Fossie" Grinstead, 76, of New
Haven, West Virginia, died Wednesday, November 26, 2003, at the
Rocksprings Rehabilitation Center in Pomeroy, Ohio.
He was born February 21, 1927, in Hartford, West Virginia, son
of the late Harry C. Grinstead and Catherine Gibbs Grinstead.
He was a supervisor for American Electric Power for 50 years.
He was a life member of the Riverside Golf Course, which he designed,
was a US Navy veteran of World War II, and was a member of Smith-Capehart
Post No. 140 of the American Legion at New Haven, and Stewart-Johnson
Post No. 9926 of the VFW at Mason, West Virginia.
He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Margie Grinstead
of Warner Robins, Georgia, and Randy and Barbara Grinstead of
Leon, West Virginia; a son, Brett Grinstead of New York, New York;
daughters, Denise Grinstead of Point Pleasant, West Virginia,
and Cindy Buzzard of Mason; grandchildren, Jennifer Pagel, Kristen
Grinstead and Evan Grinstead; and great-grandchildren, Jaeda Pagel
and Jaylyn Pagel.
He is also survived by his beloved companion, Linda Wyatt of New

PONEROY, Ohio - James Robert Grueser Sr., 54, of Pomeroy, Ohio,
died unexpectedly at his residence Wednesday, March 19, 2003.
He was born November 9, 2948, in Minersville, Ohio, son of Robert
Earl Grueser and Norma Jean Davis Grueser of Racine, Ohio.
James was employed by the Southern Ohio Coal Company. He was a
graduate of Southern High School, a member of the Pomeroy and
Racine Masonic Lodges, the Proud Grandpa Club, and the Hope Baptist
Church.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Donna
Jean Williams Grueser of Pomeroy; daughter Tracey (Eddie) Van
Matre, of Ona, W.Va.; son James Jr. (Melissa) Grueser of Racine;

NEW HAVEN - Lowell Halfhill, 58, of New Haven, West Virginia,
died of cardic arrest on Sunday, June 22, 2003, at Cabell-Huntington
Hospital in Huntington, West Virginia.
Lowell was born April 26, 1945, in Gallipolis, Ohio, son of Alzada
Halfhill Hersman, and the late Wilmer B Halfhill.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his youngest
brother, Joe, and his father-in-law, Woodrow L Foreman, brother-in-law,
Gary Green, and sister-in-law, Phyllis Scott.
He was a superintendent for United Construction Company o Parkersburg,
West Virginia, and had worked for many years at AEP power plants.
Lowell was a member of the Carpenters Local No. 650, VFW Post
NO. 9926 and American Legion Post No. 140.
He served in the United States Navy Seabees.
He will be greatly missed by his wife, Myra Foreman Halfhill,
and his children, Christy and Jeff Joyner, Carla and Mike Fuller,
and J. R. Halfhill of Akron, Ohio, Jeff Cochran of Morgan Center,
Ohio, Grant Hysell and Roberta Davis, and Jason and Lisa Hysell
of New Haven, West Virginia.
He was a special devoted grandfather to his grandchildren, Ashley
Joyner, Marissa Fuller, Taylor and Derek Hyell, Sydney Hysell,
Derek Smith, and Michaela and Tyler Davis. He was the brother
of Wilmer and Barbara Halfhill, Doug and Brenda Halfhill, and
Tom and Renee Halfhill.
He had one sister, Judy and Wayne Thompson. He is survived by
his mother-in-law, Eileen Foreman of Lorain, Ohio; his sister-in-law,
Sharon Green, brother-in-law, Everett and Linda Foreman of Sheffield
Lake, Ohio, brother-in-law, Dennis and Diane Foreman of Barboursville,
West Virginia, and brother-in-law, Jerry Scott of New Haven.
He was a loving uncle to many nieces and nephews. Lowell will
be mourned by many special friends.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, June 26, 2003, in the Foglesong-Tucker
Funeral Home in Mason, West Virginia, officiated by Pastor Carl
Ward and Pastor Chad Foreman. Burial will be followed at Sunrise
Memorial Gardens in Letart, West Virginia, where there will be
a military graveside service by American Legion Post No. 140 lf
New Haven, and VFW Post No. 9926 of Mason.
Visitation is Wednesday, June 25, 2003, from 5 to 9 p.m. at the
funeral home.

West Virginia, died Wednesday, April 23, 2003 in the Pleasant
Valley Hospital, Point Pleasant. Mildred was a homemaker and a
member of the First Baptist Church in Gallipolis, Ohio.
Born April 30, 1927, in South Carolina, she was the daughter of
the late English and Pet A. Jones. Mildred was also preceded in
death by her husband, Orin W. Hana, October 30, 1984; and a granddaughter,
Sara Rebecca Kincaid.
Surviving are two daughters and one son-in-law, Donna and Frankie
Bonecutter Jr. of Point Pleasant with whom Mildred made her home,
and Annette Fergurson of Gallipolis; six sisters; and three brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 26, 2003,

West Virginia, died at her home, Thursday morning, November 6,
2003.
She was a homemaker, and was employed by Gene and Louise Crow
for many years as a housekeeper and caregiver. She was a member
of Elizabeth Chapel in Gallipolis, Ohio.
She was born May 6, 1923, in Charleston, West Virginia, a daughter
of the late Edgar Fredrick and Lena Huddleston Hudson.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by
a son, Ed Lewis Haromon Jr.; and brothers, Sydney Hudson, Junior
Waldron, Frank Morrow and James Leport.
She is survived by her husband, Ed Lewis Harmon; three daughters,
Carolyn (Kenneth) Graham of St. Albans, West Virginia, Patty (Junior)
Gillispie of New Haven, West Virginia, and Donna (David) Mitchell
of Langsville, Ohio; three sons, James (Mary) Harmon of Gallipolis,

Tuesday, January 14, 2003, at the Ohio State University Hospital
in Columbus, Ohio. He worked in the coal yard at the AEP Philip
Sporn Plant in New Haven, W.Va. He was a 1975 graduate of Wahama
High School and attended Faith Baptist Church in Mason, W.Va.
Born May 15, 1956, in Logan, W.Va., he was a son of Richard Carl
and Joann (Cabell) Harmon of Mason.
Surviving in addition to his parents are; his wife, Connie Harmon
of Point Pleasant; a step son, Wesley Durst of Leon, W.Va.; a
brother and sister-in-law, Danny and Delia Harmon of Leon, W.Va.;
a nephew, Trevor Harmon of Leon; a special aunt, Sadie Bryant
of Chapmanville, W.Va.; six uncles, Eddie, Tommy and Harry Harmon,
and Albert, Donald and Roger Cabell; and several cousins.

17, 2003, at the Foglesong-Tucker Funeral Home in Point Pleasant,

2003, at his residence following a long illness. He worked for
the Tupper Plains-Chester Water District and retired from the
US Navy after 20 years service.

He was an engineer and retired from the U S Air Force, a member
of the Manhattan Avenue Baptist Church in Tampa, a member of the
Masonic Hillsborough Lodge, where he had served as Past District
Deputy Grand Master, and a member of the Egypt Shrine and the
York Rite.
He was born April 14, 1918, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, son
of the late Peter and Madeling Graff Hirth.
He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Clara E Byus Hirth;
a daughter, G J Catalano; a sister-in-law, Ruth Coutcher; and

POINT PLEASANT - Robert Grover Hite, 83, of Point Pleasant, West
Virginia, passes away Wesdnesday (sic), December 10, 2003,
at Pleasant Valley Hospital after a long illness.
He was the youngest child and only son of the late Grover and
Josephine (Holloway) Hite.
He was a 1938 graduate of Point Pleasant High School, and served
20 years in the military, including the United States Marine Corps
and the United States Army. He was a platoon sergeant, employed
with the 3664th Maintenance Company of the West Virginia National
Guard for 27 years.
During World War II, he participated in the Gilbert Islands and
Okinawa campaigns in the South Pacific, and was deployed to Fort
Polk, Louisiana, during the Berlin and Cuban Missile crises while
in the National Guard.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five sisters,
Hildreth Nebbergall, Junia Jo Bradshaw, Anita Bowie, Eloise O'Conner
and Nancy Mayes; and a step-son, Mary Reynolds.
He is survived by his wife, Anne; two sons, Charles Stephen (Patty)
Hite of Point Pleasant, and Joseph Holloway (Vicky) Hite of Marietta,
Ohio; a daughter, Theresa Roberta Henson of Huntington, West Virginia;
and a stepson, Richard Reynolds of Denver, Colorado.
He had two granddaughters and three great-granddaughters.
He was a good-natured friend to his peers, and a fair and loving
father to his children and cared very deeply for Anne, his loving
wife of many years. He will truly and sorely be missed by all.
A graveside service will be held at 2 pm, Saturday, December 13,
2003, at Kirkland Memorial Gardens, near Point Pleasant.
No visiting hours will be observed. Arrangements are under the
direction of the Crow-Hussell Funeral Home in Point Pleasant.

Virginia, died Thursday, November 27, 2003, at her residence.
She was born October 6, 1917, at Fairplain, West Virginia, daughter
of the late Charles M. Chancey and Beulah Mae Casto Chancey.
She was a homemaker, and a member of the Heights United Methodist
Church in Point Pleasant.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband,
William H. Hogsett; and two brothers, Everett Rex Chancey and
Charles M. Chancey.
She is survived by two sons, Bill H. Hogsett of Point Pleasant,
and James Robert Hogsett of Mount Vernon, Missouri; a daughter,
Betty Jean McCoy of Point Pleasant; a sister, Lorena and JD Wilson
of Longview, Texas; two grandchildren, Stephanie Hogsett of St.
Roberts, Missouri, and Kimberly Hogsett of Mount Vernon, Missouri;
and six nieces and nephews.
Services will be 11 am Monday, December 1, 2004, at the Deal Funeral
Home in Point Pleasant, with the Rev Rondal C Browning officiating.

Paul Edward Huber, 80, of Mason, West Virginia, died Tuesday,
October 21, 2003, at the home of his daughter, Heidi, in Jackson,
Ohio, following a short illness.
He was born May 2, 1923, in Pomeroy, Ohio, to the late Edward
and Magdalene (Grosshans) Huber.
He was retired from Philip Sporn where he had been a labor supervisor.
He was a US Arm veteran of World War II, a member of the American
Legion Post #0039, Pomeroy, and he attended Grace United Methodist
Church in Gallipolis, Ohio.
He is survived by his wife, De Ett (Dunbar) Huber of Mason; two
daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl and John Markley of Gallipolis,
and Heidi and Michael Bowman of Jackson; and three grandchildren,
Molly Markley, and Paul and Sarah Bowman.
Also surviving are two sisters, Ruth Kauffman of Halifax, Massachusetts,
and Alice Glebokar of Mason.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister,
Katherine Duffy, and one grandson, John Paul Markley.
Funeral services will be 2 pm Sunday, October 26, 2003, at the
Wilcoxen Funeral Home in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, with Dr

Pleasant, West Virginia, died in her home Sunday, May 4, 2003.
Ilene was a veteran of the U S Army and served in World War II.
She was a homemaker and attended school in Gilmer County, West

Born March 28, 1924, in Sand Fork, West Virginia, Ilene was the
daughter of the late John R and Clara Alice Pritt McHenry. She
was also preceded in death by a stepbrother, Ronald McHenry; four

Myrtle Rhowe.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Thomas "Frank"

Marie Petry and Robert Stewart of Mason, West Virginia, and Geraldine

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Georgia W. Hutchinson of Kingsville, Texas,
passed away Saturday morning, January 11, 2003, in Corpus Christi,
She was 83.
Born April 12, 1919, in Point Pleasant, she was a daughter of
the late Joseph Sam and Lorena Shirley Windon.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Kingsville,
and the Ladies Auxiliary, and a member of the Daughters of the
American Revolution.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband,
John Clay Hutchinson; and a son, George Robert Hutchinson.
She is survived by two sons, John L Hutchinson of Yoakum, and
Joseph C Hutchinson of McAllen; and grandchildren, Gretchen Hutchinson

MASON, W.Va. - Eleanor A Jarrell, 74, of Mason, West Virginia,
went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 24, 2003, at the Cabell-Huntington
Hospital. Eleanor was retired from the 3664th Armory Maintenance

She was a member of the Mason United Methodist Church.
Born July 31, 1928, in Runa, West Virginia, she was the daughter

NEW HAVEN - John W. Van Jeffers, 75, of New Haven, West Virginia,
formerly of Rising Sun, Ohio, went to be with the Lord on Monday,
November 3, 2003.
He was born in Germantown, West Virginia, on February 4, 1928,
and was a member of the Bachtel United Methodist Church of New
Haven.
John retired from the Atlas Crank Shaft Corporation in Fostoria,
Ohio, where he was a machinist for 33 years. He was a member of
the International Order of Odd Fellows in Rising Sun.
He was a World War II veteran, serving overseas with the 82nd
Airborne, 101st Signal Battalion.
John's legacy is continued by his wife, Linda V Jeffers of New
Haven, along with seven daughters and one adopted son; Mrs. Daniel

TOLEDO, Ohio - Charles Richard Johnson, 78, of Toledo, Ohio, passed
away Sunday, March 30, 2003, in the Toledo Hospital. He was born
April 6, 1924, and was a native of West Columbia, West Virginia.
Charles graduated from Wahama High School and was a 1952 graduate
of the University of Toledo College of Pharmacy. He had been a
pharmacist with the former Rupp and Bowman Pharmacy, Point Place
Rexall Drug Store, Eastmoreland Pharmacy on Starr Avenue, and
he retired in 1989 as a pharmacist with the Student Health Services
of U.T.
Charles was an Army veteran of W.W.II. He was active in the Rainbow
Division Veterans group where he had been a member of its national
association, and the Ohio Chapter Association where he served
as chaplain; a member of the New Jersey Chapter Association, the
Michigan Chapter Association, 1st Battalion 232nd Infantry, and
the Pacific Northwest Chapter. Charles became a life member of
VFW Post #3265, Point Place, in 1965; he served as Post Commander
1984-1985, Quartermaster for 32 years, was the current chaplain,
a past National Aide-de-Camp, was honored as Man of the Hour in
1986, and held various positions with the Lucas County Council
and District #1. Charles was also a life member of the American
Legion Post #110, Point Place, and was a past finance officer.
He and other local veterans were honored June 7, 2002, by Post
#606 for their participation in the liberation of France. Charles
was a longtime member of Salem Lutheran Church and the Bendover
Club.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn, with whom he celebrated
50 years of marriage of December 20, 2002; daughter, Janet and
her husband Bray; son Charles S. Johnson; grandchildren Christopher
Johnson and Cory Blackford; and brothers Vernal Johnson of Leon,
West Virginia, and Gerald Johnson and his wife, Lucy, of Mason<
West Virginia.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 3,
2003 at the Boyer VanWormer Scott Funeral Home on Secor Road,
Toledo. Interment will follow in the Forest Cemetery. A joint
VFW and American Legion service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m.
Wednesday at the funeral home. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m.

POINT PLEASANT - A Letart man was killed in a one-vehicle accident
near Point Pleasant early Sunday.
Between 1 and 2 a.m., Leroy Jones, 25, was traveling on Sandhill
Road about four miles outside Point Pleasant when the 2002 Chevy
Cavalier he was driving went off the left side of the road and
overturned. Jones was killed.
The accident is the first Mason County traffic fatality of 2003.
There were 13 fatalities in the county during 2002.
The accident is being investigated by the Mason County Sheriff's
Department.
The West Virginia State Police, Point Pleasant Volunteer Fire
Department and the Mason County EMS also responded to the scene.

ATV accident results in fatal injuries
GALLIPOLIS FERRY - A Gallipolis Ferry man died of injuries suffered
in an all-terrain vehicle accident Sunday, the Mason County Sheriff's
Department reported.
Glenn Ace Jones, 54, was transported to Pleasant Valley Hospital
by Mason County EMS following the accident, which the sheriff's
department believes occurred between 1 and 2 p.m. in a field at
4338 Flatfoot Road.
Based on witness statements and an examination of the scene, deputies
said Jones was operating the ATV and lost control on an embankment
after encountering a large rock.
The action caused the ATV to overturn. Deputies said it rolled
several times and came to rest in a creek on top of the driver.
The victim was transported to PVH prior to deputies arrival, the
report said. The victim was released to Wilcoxen Funeral Home
in Point Pleasant for arrangements.

GALLIPOLIS FERRY - Glenn Ace Jones, 54, o Gallipolis Ferry, West
Virginia, died Sunday, July 13, 2003, as a result of a farming
accident.
He was born February 11, 2949, in Gallipolis Ferry, son of the
late Glenn "Dutch" Jones and Mary Mahalia Henry Jones
of Gallipolis Ferry.
"Acey" was retired from ACF Industries, and was self-employed
and a farmer. He was a 1967 graduate of Point Pleasant High School.
He served as a sergeant in the US Army in Vietnam, where he received
the Army Commendation Medal for meritorious achievement in the
Republic of Vietnam.
Acey was a devoted father and a good friend to all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, JoAnn Bonecutter Jones of Gallipolis
Ferry; his mother, Mary Mahalia Jones of Gallipolis Ferry; two
sons, Chad Jones of Gallipolis Ferry, and Wes Jones of Gallipolis
Ferry; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Shon Jones
of Gallipolis Ferry, Charlie and Connie Jones of Gallipolis Ferry,
and Ernie and Peggy Jones of Gallipolis Ferry; and two sisters
and brothers-in-law, June and Paul Watkins of Gallipolis Ferry,
and Ferry and Sharron Smith of Gallipolis Ferry.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2003, in the Wilcoxen
Funeral Home in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, with the Rev Sanders
Rulen officiating. Burial will be in the Jordan Baptist Church
Cemetery at Gallipolis Ferry. Friends may call at the funeral

POINT PLEASANT - James "Eddie" E. Jones, 76 of Point
Pleasant, West Virginia died Thursday, May 1, 2003, in the Veterans
Medical Center, Huntington, West Virginia. Eddie served 23 years,
10 months and 16 days in the U S Army and retired August 31, 1972.
He served in World War II, the Korean War, and three tours in
Vietnam. He was awarded the Oak Leaf Cluster with five battle
stars, Purple Heart, World War II Victory Medal, Occupation Medal,
European Medal, Vietnam Medal, Army Commendation and Good Conduct
Medal, Combat Infantry Badge Germany, and Combat Infantry Badge
Korea. Eddie retired from the Philip Sporn Plant in 1992, where
he worked in the coal yard. He was a member of the Gospel Lighthouse
Church in Point Pleasant, and the Disabled American Veterans.
Born January 24, 1927, in Point Pleasant, Eddie was the son of
the late Walter William Jones and Mae Marie Mayes Jones. In addition
to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles
Jones; and one sister, Sarah Jane Hannah.
He is survived by his wife, Amy Deloris Higginbotham Jones whom
he married November 20, 1959; three sons and daughters-in-law,
Richard William and Kathy Jones of Fairmont, West Virginia, James
Edward and Donna Jones II of Point Pleasant, and Brett Alan and
Paula Jones of Muskegon, Michigan; and seven grandchildren, Richard
Jones II and Jeb Jones of Fairmont, James Jones III and Tiea Jones
of Point Pleasant, Brett "Alan" Jones II, Kimberly Jones,
and Andrew Jones of Muskegon.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 4, 2003, at
the Wilcoxen Funeral Home in Point Pleasant with the Rev William
Banks officiating. Burial will take place in the Suncrest Cemetery,
Point Pleasant, following a graveside service conducted by the
VFW Post # 9926, Mason, West Virginia. Friends may call of the
family from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2003, at the funeral

NEW HAVEN - Roy Eugene Jones went to be with the Lord peacefully
on Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at his home, due to complications
of Hodgkin's Disease. Roy loved God, his family and his friends.
Born September 1, 1916, in southwestern Glad Springs, Virginia,
he was the son of the late William "Poppa" and Ettie
Huffman Jones.
He was a graduate of Rainelle High School in Rainelle, West Virginia,
a graduate of the Coyne Electrical School of Chicago, Illinois,
and a member for 50 years of the former Evangelical United Brethren
and present New Haven United Methodist Church.
Roy worked 40 years for American Electric Poser, retiring as an
electrical maintenance supervisor for Gavin Power Plant. After
his retirement, he and his family traveled many miles in the family
RV.
He lived for some time in Omar, West Virginia, where he was a
Master Mason (50-year member) of the Aracoma Lodge No. 99. He
was also active with the Girl Scouts of America.
Surviving are his wife of 66 years. Shelma Crookshank Jones; a
daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Richard Rawlings of Mason;
a son, Michael Eugene Jones of Birmingham, Alabama; three grandsons
and two grand-daughters-in-law, Timothy and Bobbi Rawlings of
Cleveland, Tennessee, and Senior Master Sergeant Todd Rawlings
of Eagle River, Alabama; a great-grandchild, Hayden Rawlings of
Williamsburg, Virginia; and many nieces and nephews.
Two sisters survive, Mrs. Mary Holliday and Mrs. June Estep of
Rupert, West Virginia; three brothers, Therman Jones of Grafton,
Richard Jones of North Olmstead, Ohio, and Joseph W Jones of Mason;
and a brother-in-law, Ralph Waynt of Huntington, West Virginia.
Besides his parents, three sisters preceded Roy in death, Evelyn
Simmons, Ada Kincaid and Ruby Wyant.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2003, at Fogelsong-Tucker
Funeral Home in Mason, with the Rev. Anetta Durst officiating.
Burial will follow at Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Letart.

POINT PLEASANT - Stephen Allen Jones, 54, of Point Pleasant, West
Virginia, died Wednesday, December 10, 2003, at the Holzer Medical
Center in Gallipolis, Ohio, after a long illness.
He was born October 5, 1949, in Charleston, West Virginia, son
of the late William (Ralph) and Virginia Elizabeth Humphreys Jones.
He was a 1968 graduate of Point Pleasant High School, a charter
member of the Flatrock Volunteer Fire Department, a member of
the Davies Grove Baptist Church. He had worked as a carpenter
for the Hughes Homebuilders of Winfield, West Virginia.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Bryan Morrow
of Point Pleasant; two grandchildren, Darian Elizabeth and Kyelar
Trace Morrow of Point Pleasant; two sisters and brother-in-law
Barbara "Bobbie" Woody of Clendenin, West Virginia,
and Deborah and Bruce Tucker of St Albans, West Virginia.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother
William Ralph (Bill) Jones.
A memorial service will be held at 8 pm Saturday, December 13,
2003, at the Wilcoxen Funeral Home in Point Pleasant, with the
Rev William "Bud" Hatfield officiating.
Family will receive friends from 7 pm until service time Saturday.

LEON - Lester Keefer, 85, of Leon, West Virginia departed this
life Monday, June 23, 2003, in Jackson General Hospital at Ripley,
West Virginia, following an extended illness.
He was born September 4, 1917, in Leon, son of the late Ephraim
Francis and Samantha Margaret Absten Keefer.
He was a farmer, a retired foreman from the West Virginia Department
of Highways.
He was also a mail carrier, a census taker, an assessor, a trustee
for the Smith Cemetery, and was a board member of the Mason County
Agricultural Conservation Service for 10 years.
Survivors include his with, Glaydys (sic) Durst Keefer;
sons (sic), Nora Donohew of Evans, West Virginia, and Reba
Workman of Maysel, West Virginia; sons, Arthur Keefer and Ray
Keefer, both of Leon; a sister, Osa Merritt of Columbus, Ohio;
and seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at the Casto
Funeral Home in Evans, with the Rev. Douglas Garten officiating.
Burial will follow in the Smith Cemetery at Leon. Friends may

LEON - Lionel L. Keefer, 69, of Leon, passed away Sunday, March
30, 2003, at his residence following a long illness.
He was a retired construction foreman for Upton Construction Company,
with 30 years of service. Lionel was a member of the Leon United
Methodist Church and a lifelong resident of Leon.
His father Clyde Keefer and his brother, Ray Keefer, preceded
him in death.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia S. Graham Keefer of Leon;
his mother, Sylvia Keefer of Leon; his son, Dana L. Keefer of
Leon; his brother, Alvin Keefer of Leon; sisters, Alpha Wedge
of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and Veva Martin of Columbus,
Ohio; and his grandson, Justin Keefer-Meske of Phoenix, Arizona.
There will be no funeral or calling hours. The family will hold
a memorial service at a later date.

LAS VEGAS, NEV. - Margaret Keefer, 91, of Las Vegas, Nevada, formerly
of Mason County, West Virginia, died March 29, 2003, in the Chyanne
Care Center, Las Vegas. She lived in Mason County her entire life
until six years ago when her health began to decline. She then
moved to Las Vegas to be with her family. Margaret and her husband
owned grocery stores in Leon and Point Pleasant, West Virginia.
Born March 31, 1911, at Mason County, she was a daughter of the
late Phillip and Ada Rollins Durst. In addition to her parents,
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Roy C. Keefer.
Survivors include her son, Roy Keefer of Las Vegas; three grandchildren;
five great-grandchildren; a brother, Will Pierson of Leon; and
a sister, Thelma Rollins of Leon.
Graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 5,
2003, at the Suncrest Cemetery in Point Pleasant, with the Rev.
Herman Jordan officiating. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday,

IN LOVING MEMORY OF MARGARET KEEFER
Margaret Keefer passed away on March 29, 2003 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
"Maggie" was born in Mason County on March 31, 1911.
She was married to Roy C Keefer, who preceded her in death. Together
they operated grocery stores in Leon and Point Pleasant for many
years. Due to her declining health, she moved to Las Vegas in
1996 to be with her son, Roy and his family.
She loved Point Pleasant and her friends and was deeply saddened
to leave, them, but being with Roy, his wife Shelby, and her three
grandchildren and five great grandchildren comforted her.
Although we were very fortunate to have her with us for so many
years, it was difficult to lose her and she will be greatly missed
by her family. We take comfort in knowing she will now be with
her departed friends and her health has been restored and her
pain has ceased.
We want to thank her many friends who kept in touch with her while
she was with us in Las Vegas. The telephone calls and letters
brightened her days and she looked forward to receiving them.
We sincerely appreciate your efforts to stay in touch, it meant
so much to her. Thanks so very much to each of you.
Visitation services will be at Deal Funeral Home 1401 Kanawha
St/ at 6-8 pm on Friday, April 4 and graveside services will be
held at 10:30 am at Suncrest Cemetery.

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - Edna Mae Kemplin, 87, of Chillicothe, passed
away Saturday, June 29, 2003, at the Adena Regional Medical Center

Edna was born December 6, 1915, in Buffalo, West Virginia, to

NEW HAVEN - Ross O'Dell King, 72, of New Haven, West Virginia,
passed away Monday, November 24, 2003, at CAMC Hospital in Charleston,
West Virginia, after an extended illness.
He was born October 10, 1931, in Graham Station, West Virginia,
son of the late Herbert R. King and Esther Weaver King.
He retired after 30 years as a fire protection and safety superintendent
at Kaiser Aluminum Corporation. He was a member of the Clifton
Lodge AF&AM No. 23 at Mason, West Virginia, the Nemesis Temple
and Scottish Rite of Freemasonry at Parkersburg, West Virginia,
and was a charter member of the Stewart-Johnson Post No. 9926
of the VFW at New Haven. He was a member of the Smith-Capehart
Post No. 140 of the American Legion, and was a US Navy veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Johnson King of New Haven; daughters
and sons-in-law, Debra and Bob Roush of Mason, and Yalanda and
Steve Holschaw of Charleston; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael
and Lurinda King of Given, West Virginia; grandsons, Bobby Joe
(Beth) Roush of Letart, West Virginia, and Aaron Brian Tyler Holschaw
of Charleston; and granddaughters, Christina Roush of Mason, Kendra
(Kurt) Palmer of Given, and Sarah King of Given.
He is also survived by a great-granddaughter, Tristen Roush of
Letart; a sister, Frances Frye of Mason; a sister and brother-in-law,
Peggy and Jim Broderick of Pomeroy, Ohio; brothers and sisters-in-law,
Jimmy and Phyllis King of New Haven, and Gary and Teresa King

REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio - Lola M Kovalchik, 83, of Reynoldsburg, formerly
of Hartford, West Virginia, died Saturday, July 26, 2003, at her
daughter's residence in Reynoldsburg.
She was born August 17, 1919, in Mason County, West Virginia,
daughter of the late Jimmy Johnson and Valley Garen Johnson.
She was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers;
two husbands; and sons, Ray Yonker Sr and John Kovalchik.
She is survived by a son, Raymond Yonker of Apple Grove, West
Virginia; daughters, Rose and Sam Anderson of Hartford, and Anna
Ruth Morris of Reynoldsburg; 17 grandchildren; and a sister Mable
Cain of Sarasota, Florida.

APPLE GROVE - Ralph Lang, 70, of Apple Grove, West Virginia, went
to be with his Lord on Tuesday, October 28, 2003.
He was born April 9, 1933, in Summersville, West Virginia. He
was a veteran of the US Navy and retired from Armco Steel at Ashland,
Kentucky.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Dorothy
Lang; a son, Richard Workman; and his brother, Johnny Lang.
He is survived by his loving wife, Janice Ilene Lang; children,
David Watterson and wife Sharon, Ernie Watterson and wife Vicki,
Steve Watterson and wife Tammy, all of Apple Grove, and Janie
Burris and husband Hugh Jr., of Point Pleasant, West Virginia.
Also surviving are two sisters, Kathleen Dunford of Kenova, West
Virginia, and Ann Garren of Huntington, West Virginia.
Ralph was a loving friend, brother, husband and grandfather, leaving
behind many loving family members and friends.
Services will be 11 am Friday, October 31, 2003, at the Beard
Mortuary in Huntington, with Pastor Max Spurlock and Bobby Woods
officiating. Burial will immediately follow in the Greenbottom

the late James H. and Doris Geraldine Davis Lee. He was employed
as a central receiver and storekeeper at Lakin Hospital.

He was born Feb 22, 1923, in Kenova, W.Va., to the late Alexander
and Julie (Lambert) Legg.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three
brothers, Willis Legg, Sam Legg and Franklin Wilson; and three
sisters, Jane Hodge, Anna Hayes and Mary Clagg.
He was a US Army veteran serving during WWII where he received
the Purple Heart among other medals. He was retired from General
Motors as a welder.
George is survived by his wife, Marie (Goodway) Legg of Vinton,
Ohio; sons and daughters-in-law, James and Sherrie Legg of Vinton,
Ohio, David Hoover of Vinton, Ohio, Joe and Donna Hoover of Vinton,
Ohio, and Sharon Bennett and fiancé Steve Robinson of Wellston,
Ohio; 16 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
He is also survived by nephews, Charles W Legg of Valley City,
Ohio, Robert Legg of Fort McCoy, Fla., James E Legg of Brunswick,
Ohio, Samuel Legg of Tucson, Ariz., Aronold Moore of Silver Springs,
Fla., and a brother-in-law, Patrick Goodway Sr and Helen of Callahan,
Fla.
Services will be held at 2 pm Sunday, Sept 21, 2003, at Wilcoxen
Funeral Home in Point Pleasant, W.Va., with the Rev James Patterson
officiating. Burial will follow in the Pete Meadows Cemetery in
Glenwood, W.Va.
Friends may call from 7-9 pm on Saturday, Sept 20, 2003, at the
funeral home.
Military graveside rites will be conducted by Stewart-Johnson

POINT PLEASANT - William Russell Lewis, 76, of Point Pleasant,
West Virginia, died Monday evening, December 8, 2003, at Pleasant
Valley Hospital in Point Pleasant.
He was a retired maintenance supervisor for Ohio Valley Electric
Corporation Kyger Creek Station. He was also a 1945 graduate of
Point Pleasant High School, a member of the Bellemead United Methodist
Church in Point Pleasant, and was also a US Army veteran.
He was born December 4, 1927, in Point Pleasant, a son of the
late Charles Harold and Genevieve (Lewis) Lewis.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a
brother, Charles Clement Lewis.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Lynn (Peoples) Lewis; two
daughters and a son-in-law, Brenda Lynn and Keith Saunders of
Bidwell, Ohio, and Jenny Ann Lewis of Spencer, West Virginia;
a son and daughter-in-law, William R and Mary Lewis of West Columbia,
West Virginia; and two grandsons, Joshua William Lewis and Natnan
Andrew Lewis.
He is also survived by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Naomi
Frances and Harold Bumgardner of New Haven, West Virginia, and
Ruth Virginia and Glenn Thompson of Mason, West Virginia; and
a brother and sister-in-law, James H and Nora Lewis of Point Pleasant.
Services will be 1 pm Thursday, December 11, 2003, in the Crow-Hussell
Funeral Home at Point Pleasant, with the Rev James H Lewis officiating.

West Virginia, died Friday, December 12, 2003, in Pleasant Valley
Hospital at Point Pleasant.
She was born September 20, 1920, in Gokman, Georgia, daughter
of the late John F Elliott and Lola A Dale Elliott.
She was a teacher's aide at North Point Pleasant Elementary School.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
She is survived by her husband, Charles "Red" Lingerfelt
of Point Pleasant; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Sharon
Lingerfelt of Roanoke, Virginia; a daughter and son-in-law, Vicki
and Jerry Alcott of London, Ohio; and two grandsons.

NEW HAVEN, W.Va. - Mildred Jean Lingerfelt, 74, of New Haven,
West Virginia, died Friday, April 25, 2003, in the Pleasant Valley
Hospital, Point Pleasant. She was a member of the Followers of
Christ, with whom she worshiped in her home.
Mildred was born April 15, 1929, in Wayne County, West Virginia,
to John and Sarah Mitchell.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband,
Carson Lingerfelt; and a son, William Keith Adkins.
She is survived by a son, John David Adkins and his wife Sidney;
two brothers, Johnnie Mitchell and his wife Teresa, and Obie Mitchell

POMEROY, OHIO - Eleanor J Jordan Logan, 78, of Pomeroy, passed
away Wednesday, September 17, 2003, at Pleasant Valley Hospital,
Point Pleasant, West Virginia.
Born August 18, 1925, in Gallipolis, Ohio, she was the daughter
of the late Hugh and Florence Vance Jordan.
She was a homemaker and attended the Baptist Church. She enjoyed
volunteering for the Meigs Athletic Boosters for many years.
She is survived by her husband, Howard Logan; a son and daughter-in-law,
Ronald and Kay Logan of Middleport; two grandsons and their wives,
Darin and Angie Logan of Middleport, Kevin and Sharon Logan of
Racine, Ohio; grand-grandsons, Bradley and Connor Logan; sisters,
Betty Zatkovic of Bessemer, Pennsylvania; Jane Roberson of Columbus,
Ohio; and sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Archie Gibson of
Zanesville, Ohio.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter,
Barbara Logan; three brothers, Robert, John and Thomas Jordan;
and a sister Patricia Lippert.

POINT PLEASANT - Mae Blanch Pearson Luckeydoo of Point Pleasant,
West Virginia, died Monday, June 30, 2003, at the age of 72, in
the Holzer Medical Center in Gallipolis, Ohio.
Mae was a homemaker.
She was born July 24, 1929, in Mason County, West Virginia, the
daughter of the late Wesly and Frances Witt Pearson.
She was also preceded in death by two sons, the Rev Charles William
Luckeydoo and Willard Thomas Luckeydoo; one sister, Velma Siders;
three brothers, Boyd Pearson, Wesly Pearson and Jack Pearson.
Surviving are her husband, Willard Luckeydoo of Point Pleasant;
a daughter and son-in-law, Frances and Gene Campbell of Gallipolis;
a daughter-in-law, Karen Luckeydoo of Gallipolis; and grandsons,
Marvin Luckeydoo Jr. of Southside, West Virginia, Danny Luckeydoo

She is also survived by one sister, Genevieve Williams of Gallipolis;

MASON - Roger Dale Luikart, 54, of Mason, West Virginia, died
Friday, October 10, 2003, at Arbors of Gallipolis.
He was born October 13, 1948, in Mason, son of the late Kenneth
Luikart and Christine Henry Luikart.
He was a coal miner at Meigs Mine No. 3. He was a veteran of the
US Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, and was a member of Stewart-Johnson
Post No. 9926 of the VFW at Mason.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Christie and Harry
Barton of Pomeroy, Ohio; a son, Alan Stout of Middleport, Ohio;
a daughter, Sharon Luikart of Galax, Virginia; and grandchildren,
Joseph Barton, Autom Barton, Emmitt Barton, Garrett Barton, Colton
Barton, Nathan Ohlinger, Tevin Anderson and Arryn Stout.
He is also survived by sisters, Kay Luikart of Mason, and Rita
Oliver of Point Pleasant, West Virginia; and half-brothers, John
Luikart of Mason, and Leo Luikart of Lakin, West Virginia.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother,
Raymond Luikart.
Services were held at 1 pm Monday, October 13, 2003, in the Foglesong-Tucker
Funeral Home at Mason, with the Rev Sam Cale IV officiating. Burial
followed in the Sunrise Memorial Gardens at Letart, West Virginia.
Visitation was held in the funeral home from 6 to 8 pm Sunday,
October 12, 2003.
Military graveside services were conducted by Stewart-Johnson
Post No. 9926 of the VFW, and Smith-Capehart Post No. 140 of the
American Legion.

Charles J Lyons, 73, of Letart, W.Va., died Friday, July 18,
2003, at Pleasant Valley Hospital.
Born November 25, 1929, in Wood County, W.Va., son of the late
Roy E Lyons and the late Audrey M Willison Lyons, he was a veteran
of the United States Army and he served in the Korean War.
He is survived by a son, Randy (Joan) Lyons of Cynthiana, Ky.;
a daughter, Charlene (Lee) Snyder of Kennesaw, Ga.; a brother,
Robert (Sarah) Lyons of Canton, Ohio; four grandsons; and six
granddaughters.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife,
