Accident kills Gallipolis Ferry Man

GALLIPOLIS FERRY - A Gallipolis Ferry man fell to his death Friday morning in a freak accident at the John Amos Power Plant in Winfield, West Virginia.
Timothy E Siders II, a boilermaker and member of the Boilermakers Union 667, had just arrived for work and was crossing a piece of grating that employees used within the plat to get to different levels, when it broke loose and fell more than 90 feet said a spokesperson for the Boilermakers Union.
"It was just a freak accident. It was ironic. He worked in a very dangerous job where he had to be tied off for protection, but he was killed by something totally unrelated," Dixie Gillenwater, a secretary for the union said.
Gillenwater said that 100-150 other employees had already crossed the walkway and had no problems. She said that there was an employee front of him and an employee behind him, but neither were injured. The flooring where they were walking did not fall.
"This was a graduate apprentice boilermaker, who worked for the Barberton, Ohio-based Babcock and Wilcox, a contractor of American Electric Power. Columbus, Ohio-based AEP owns and operates the plant.
Gillenwater said that the Boilermakers Union 667 was not responsible for the iron grating in the walkway, but was not sure who was liable.
OSHA investigators arrived at the scene just before noon Friday, but had no conclusions to report at press time.
Siders was flown by helicopter to Charleston Area Medical Center General Division, where he died later during surgery.
Siders was the son of Timothy E and Cynthia E Siders, of Gallipolis Ferry, West Virginia. Timothy would have been 29 years old Nov. 23.
