Point Pleasant -- Dewayne Lee Sayre, 71, of Point Pleasant, W.Va.,
departed this life Sunday, March 20, 2005, in Pleasant Valley
Hospital.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, a retired security
guard from Lakin State Hospital and a former truck driver for
Sunoco Paper Products. He enjoyed flea markets, horses and auto
work.
He was born May 7, 1933 in Leon, W.Va., a son of the late Hoyt
Laben and Mary Lodisa Sayre.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers,
Ted, David and Gary Phillip; a sister, Catholine Riffle; and a
grandson, James Walter Gibbs III.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine Marie "Kitten"
(Hancock) Sayre; two daughters, Lodisa Ann Gibbs of Williamstown,
W.Va., and Connie Sue Simpkins of Point Pleasant; two brothers,
Hoyt Sayre Jr. of Carson City, Nev., and Everette Samuel Sayre
of Solon, Ohio; five sisters, Marylin Heffelfinger of Monroe Falls,
Ohio, Imogene Snyder of Letart, W.Va., Angalene Adams of Carson
City, Eileen Snyder of Silver Springs, Nev., and Marceline Buechner
of Sandpoint, Idaho; grandchildren, William Franklin Simpkins
Jr., Mary Allison Gibbs and Anna Christine Gibbs; and great-grandchildren,
Alexis Dawn Simpkins and Gage Franklin Simpkins.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, March 24, 2005 at Casto Funeral
Home in Evans, W.Va., with the Rev. Randy Parsons officiating.
Burial will follow in the Creston Cemetery in Evans. Visitation
will be 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2005 at the funeral home.

Hugh Barbee Shiflet, 80, of Columbus, Ohio, went to be with the
Lord on Feb. 4, 2005, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.
Hugh was a veteran of the Navy and served in World War II. He
worked for the Corps of Engineers at Lock 22 in Ravenswood, W.Va.
Hugh loved God and encouraged all of us to attend church and worship
Christ. He showed his love in small ways, coaching baseball, teaching
us to hunt, encouraging us in music and careers. He would go above
and beyond to take care of us and give us opportunities. He loved
his family and often boasted about us. Dad was a sweet and kind
person.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lemuel and Alma Marie
(Hilton) Shiflet; and a sister, Alda.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Mary Kathryn Young
Shiflet of Columbus; sons Roger (Mary) Shiflet of Circleville,
Ohio, David (Deborah) Shiflet of Galloway, Ohio, Robert Shiflet
of Bennett, Wis., and Nathaniel Shiflet of Columbus; daughters
Nancy (Mark) Malone of Payson, Ariz., and Joyce (James) Brown
of Pataskala, Ohio; grandchildren Melissa, Jeanette, Jessica,
Paul, Nicholas, Elizabeth, Larson, Michael, Matthew, Kristian
and Kayla; and great-grandchildren Jamie, Chase, Catelyn, Clayton,
Anton, Brandon, Cameron, Jordan, Tyler, and Jordan.
Also surviving are a brother, Jack (Babe) Shiflet of Rutland,
Ohio; and a sister, Rebecca Bibbee of Florida.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at Fisher Funeral
Home in Middleport, Ohio. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

W.Va., died Friday, April 1, 2005, at Pleasant Valley Hospital
in Point Pleasant, W.Va.
He was a farm laborer.
He was born June 17, 1932, in Mason, W.Va., the son of the late
Theodore Roosevelt and Virginia Marie (Bass) Smith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister,
Betty McDermitt; and two brothers, Leroy Smith and Leonard Smith.
He is survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Gloria and Dennis
Flowers of Letart, W.Va.; three sisters, Clara Belle Stover of
Letart, Belva Jeffries of Point Pleasant, and Leona Smith of West
Columbia; and two brothers, Wayne Smith of Point Pleasant and
Tubby Smith of West Columbia.
Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Monday, April 4, 2005, in the
Stewart Cemetery, West Columbia, with Pastor Donald Roach officiating.
Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday, April 4,
2005, at the funeral home.

2005, at Pleasant Valley Hospital in Point Pleasant, W.Va.
She was a homemaker, and a member of the Millstone Church in Apple
Grove.
She was preceded in death by her husband Mike Smith; and three
brothers and three sisters.
She was born July 28, 1956, in Mason County, W.Va.
Surviving are her mother, Geraldine Price of Apple Grove; her
father and stepmother, Kenny and Loretta Price of Glenwood, W.Va.;
a special friend, Amos Sigmon of Apple Grove; a son, Michael Smith
II of Apple Grove; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Whitney
Smith, Cindy and Aaron Hardman, and Melissa and Scott Pearson,
all of Apple Grove; two brothers, Danny Price of Apple Grove and
Duke Price of Gallipolis Ferry, W.Va.; four sisters and two brothers-in-law,

W.Va., died Monday, April 4, 2005, at St. Marys Medical
Center.
He was a maintenance worker at the Gallia County Courthouse.
He was born Dec. 12, 1939, in Mason County, the son of the late
Virgil and Stella (Parsons) Stalnaker.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers,
his twin brother, Bill Stalnaker, and Bruce Stalnaker.
He is survived by his companion, Jeanie Buck of Point Pleasant;
a daughter and son-in-law, Sherri Stalnaker and Timothy Bennington
of Columbus, Ohio; a granddaughter, Summer (Vincent) Falcone of
Columbus; special children, Kathy Stover and Beth Brainard; special
grandchildren, Justin and Sarah Stover; a special great-grandson,
Jacob Stover; one brother, Oral (Carol) Stalnaker of Plain City,

Obituaries
Carmel, Ind -- John Mead Stevens, 98, recently of Carmel, Ind.,
and formerly of Gallipolis Ferry, W.Va., and St. Albans, W.Va.,
died Thursday, April 7, 2005.
He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He
was retired from Union Carbide, where he worked for 25 years as
an insulator in both the South Charleston and Institute Plants.
He attended St. Marks Episcopal Church in St. Albans for
nearly 50 years.
He played football at Point Pleasant High School in 1927 under
the coach Jerome VanMeter. He was a lineman known for his style,
"No Noise, but what a Kick." He attended Morris Harvey,
New River State and Marshall colleges before teaching in one-room
schools in Mason County prior to World War II. In World War II,
he was a member of the medical corps of the 101st Airborne Division.
He participated in D-day in Holland, and he was captured at Bastogne
on Dec. 19, 1944. He was freed on April 13, 1945.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John W. Stevens and Nannie
L. Meade; his wife, the former Eva Frances Henry; brothers and
sisters, Sterlie W. Stevens, Helen Stevens McDowell and Carrie
Stevens Mohr.
He is survived by his sisters, Mary Forrest of South Charleston,
W.Va., and Eva Gibson of Phoenix, Ariz.; his daughter, Nancy (Richard)
Hauser of Carmel, Joan Dameron of Earlysville, Va.; a son, John
(Ann) Stevens of Belpre, Ohio; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren;
and nieces and nephews.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, April 9, 2005, at Cunninghams
Cemetery in St. Albans.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made
to St. Marks Episcopal Church, 405 B. Street, St. Albans,
WV 25177 or to the Armed Forces Relief Trust, Dept. 6055, Washington,
DC 20042-6055 to assist a struggling military family.

of Pliny; his girlfriend, Tess Reynolds of Milton, W.Va.; maternal
grandmother, Stella Knapp; nephew, David Allen Scott; niece, McKenzie
Trippett; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

U. Beckley "Beck" Tavan, 92, of Galion, Ohio, died Saturday,
Feb. 5, 2005, at Village Care Center after a one-month illness.
Beck was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in World War II.
He retired from the former Galion Iron Works where he worked as
an assembler. He was a member of American Legion Scarbrough Post
243, Galion, and was an avid gardener all of his life.
Born Dec. 23, 1912, in Omar, W.Va., he was the son of the late
Joseph Tavan and Olive (Buskirk) Tavan.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son,
Robert Tavan; three sisters; and a brother.
He married Trevelyn Plack on July 11, 1954, and she survives.
He also is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Patty and
Charles Lowry of Glouster, Ohio, and Betty and Ken Combs of Irving,
Texas; 10 grandchildren, Christy Hanson, James Tavan, Terri Dolbier,
Bradley Tavan, Steven Lowry, Sondra DiFranco, Lisa Bowen, Lari
Reininger, Diane Crepe and Dr. Michael Combs; 15 great-grandchildren;

She was born Oct. 27, 1943, in Springfield, Ohio, the daughter
of the late Frank G. Andrews and Esphy Viola Duffy Fraley.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers,
Charles and Gary Board; stepsister, Mary Jane Hensley; and former
husband, Melvin Keith Williams.
Survivors include four daughters, Brenda K. Conley of Point Pleasant,
Bonita L. (John) Kasee of Middleport, Ohio, Lora A. (James) Persinger
of Point Pleasant and Cynthia D. (Kenneth) Marnati of Point Pleasant;
two sons, Martin K. Williams of Bluefield, W.Va., and Terry K.
(Reena) Martin of Point Pleasant; 17 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren;
three brothers, Russell Andrews, Richard and Henry Board, all
of Springfield; and stepsister, Julie Fraley of Michigan.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at Willis
Funeral Home in Gallipolis with Russell Andrews officiating. Burial

of Edward J. Crockett, Charlotte E. Crockett, Wilson W. Tryon
and August M. Tryon.

Episcopal Church in Arlington. A graveside service will be conducted
11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, at the Lone Oak Cemetery in Point

will be presented by the Colonel Charles Lewis Chapter DAR. There

Army Veteran and a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps.

Patrick D. Wood, 78, of Pomeroy, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, Feb.
1, 2005, at Pleasant Valley Hospital in Point Pleasant, W.Va.
Patrick served as president of the Band Boosters for Meigs Local
from 1976 to 1979. He was a past Master of the Pomeroy Masonic
Lodge and member from 1977 until 1992, when he transferred to
the Harrisonville Lodge 411 where he served as treasurer. He also
was a member of Harrisonville Eastern Star 255; Grand Chapter,

and was active in scouting since 1967. He was employed as an accountant
by Jones Buick in Athens, Ohio, and Blaettnar's Buick in Pomeroy.
He was a member of the Trinity Church in Pomeroy, where he served
as Elder and Trustee from 1983 to 1986 and as Deacon until 1987.
Born Aug. 26, 1926, in Pomeroy, he was the son of the late Don
L. and Corrina Cornell Nicholson Wood. In addition to his parents,
he was preceded in death by his wife Audrey E. Wood in 2002; and
a sister, Allegra Will. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law,
Lori Ann and Glenn C. Clutter of Williamsport, Pa.; a son and
daughter-in-law, Danny L. and Linda C. Will of Pomeroy; and grandchildren
Tara Gaab and Tess Clutter, both of Williamsport, Randall Carpenter
Jr. of Middleport, Ohio, and Denise Gibeaut of Pomeroy. Services
will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at Trinity Church in Pomeroy,
with the Rev. Jonathan Noble officiating. Burial will follow in
Beech Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Friday, Feb.
4, 2005, at Fisher Funeral Home in Pomeroy and one hour prior
to the services at the church. Harrisonville Eastern Star 255
and Harrisonville Masonic Lodge 411 will conduct services at 8:30
p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to

Obituaries
Point Pleasant, WV -- Doris Marie Wyant, 85, of Point Pleasant,
W.Va., died Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at Pleasant Valley Hospital
in Point Pleasant.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Women of the Moose No.
594 of Point Pleasant and the Grace Bible Baptist Church of Point
Pleasant.
She was born Nov. 25, 1919, in Henderson, W.Va., to the late James
Thomas and Molly Frances (Arthur) Mayes.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband,
Benjamin Harrison Wyant Jr.; one nephew, Thomas "Tucker"
Mayes; three brothers, Robert, Thomas and Lloyd Mayes; and four
sisters, Virginia Patterson, Madeline Moore, Bonnie Waldie and
Delphia Noble.
She is survived by three sons, Ronald T. Wyant of Wilmington,
N.C., Richard A. (Brenda) Wyant of Point Pleasant, and Donald
(Loretta) Wyant of Henderson; one special nephew, Ronald (Mary)
Mayes of Point Pleasant; one special friend, John Williams of
Wilmington; three sisters, Jean Casto of Point Pleasant, Louise
Caynor of Point Pleasant and Eva Long of Pittsburgh, Pa.; five
grandchildren, Missy Dye, Tasha Wyant, Jessica Rollins, Rick Wyant
and Tessa Wyant; one great-granddaughter, Breanna Wyant; and several
nieces and nephews.
Services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 20, 2005, at the Wilcoxen
Funeral Home with Pastor Carl Swisher and the Rev. Garry Lamb
officiating. Burial will follow in the Lone Oak Cemetery in Point
Pleasant. Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Saturday, March 19, 2005,
at the funeral home.

Webster, Fla. -- Bertha Elizabeth Young, 80, of Webster, Fla.,
formerly of Point Pleasant, died Tuesday, April 19, 2005 in Bushnell,
Fla.
She was a homemaker.
She was born Oct. 3, 1918 in Petersburg, W.Va., the daughter of
the late Lawson Southerly and Mary Henkle Southerly.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband,
Pete Young; two sisters, Wanda Godlove and Ruth Koontz; and two
grandchildren, Greg Young and Paula Harnsly.
She is survived by her four sons and daughters-in-law, Pete and
Phyllis Young of Point Pleasant, Pat and Linda Young of Webster,
Bill and Naoma Southerly of Shariman, Fla., Gary and Paula Young
of Webster; sister, Wilda Hatfield of Huntington; 10 grandchildren;
20 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 24, 2005, at Deal
Funeral Home in Point Pleasant, with Pastor Richard DeQuazie officiating.
Burial will follow in Kirkland Memorial Gardens in Point Pleasant.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Saturday, April 23, 2005, at the
funeral home.
