Patton Boarding House
This photo was taken at the boarding house run by Mary and Emmett Patton. This was a typical wash day for Mary and her daughter, Emma Lou. For about $.25 a day, the coal miners would get two meals, clothes washed and a place to board. This picture was taken around 1915. Emma Lou was my grandmother and will always hold a special place in my heart. The shorter woman on the left is Mary Shrader Patton, holding the hand of her little boy, Hayden Patton, The taller lady in the striped shirt is her daughter, Emma Lou Brewer, and the baby in the high chair is Emmet Brewer, who fought in World War II.
