MCDOWELL COUNTY PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM
Pond Creek Coal Company
(Island Creek Coal Company)
Pond Creek Coal was located near Beartown, beside route 80, and between Bradshaw and Iaeger.
The first two pictures (below) are of the construction of the old Pond Creek when it was first being built. The other pictures were taken after it was in operation.
Pond Creek's name was changed to Island Creek in the mid to late 50's. Island Creek Coal Company added an addition on the right side of the old Pond Creek tipple. Later it was sold out to Hawley Fuel in the 60's. Hawley also added an addition to the left side with tables that separated the coal from the slack coal and spin dryers and a thermal dryer was added to improve the quality of the coal.
Virginia Crews Coal Company later bought out Hawley in the early part of the 90's, around 1994 or so. The addition that Island Creek had put on the tipple was removed, leaving the old part of the Pond Creek and Hawley tipple. This tipple went by the name of Blueboy #6 Tipple. There was also a mine up Beartown Hollow that tracked coal by rail to what was called the head house that had a belt line at the top that feed in to the tipple. This tipple closed down in 2001 and was torn down around 2003.
As of today the only thing that remains is the shakeout and the office. The last picture was how the tipple looked at closing.
