Crystal, WV In 2001, I posted a query asking where Crystal, WV is located. I would like to thank the many kind folk who have emailed me with a response. I thought others might be interested to know the following, which is a summary of the information provided everyone (Crystal was not actually in McDowell County, but is not far from the county line): According to Bullinger's Postal and Shippers Guide, Crystal is in Mercer County, WV, near Rock, WV, and Bluefield, WV. An online list of place names in West Virginia shows that Crystal was in Mercer Co. in 1911. It is about ten miles from Bluefield and about five miles from the McDowell county line, midway between Montcalm and McComas (also between Montcalm and Cane Creek). Crystal's nearest neighbor, less than a mile to the east, is Godfrey. Crystal doesn't appear on most maps because it is such a small place - not even a town, just a small coal mining community - and there may be nothing left there now. Any records for people who lived in Crystal should be located at the Mercer County courthouse in Princeton, WV. Thanks again - Jeff Smeltzer

Dear McDowellites, I have fallen in love with your county..it's beautiful land and people. I was raised on the coast of NC, worked hard all my life, and now wish to live part time in your area. Why is'nt there any land for sale there? What gives? The mountains of NC and VA are a virtual sea of "for sale" signs. But so far I have not been able to locate any property in McDowell Co. I am not a developer, or a crazy "yankee" that wants to move in and change things! I just want to acquire a small amount of buildable/gardenable land and enjoy McDowell County on a more permanent basis. Any ideas? Thankyou, Jim Baluss

My dad had a sister that was buried in Hensley. Her name is Lucy Ellen Worley, born August 20, 1943, died December 2, 1943. She's buried where you can only drive the car so far and have to walk up a mountain to her grave. I can remember as a child going there. My dad put a fence around the graves sometime in the late 60's. The best I can remember there were only a few graves then. My mom mentioned Eckman, I don't know if that is near Hensley or what. Haven't visited Hensley since 1972, I was born & raised in Pontiac, MI. I'm 49 now and trying to make my family tree. My mother was born in Davy and raised in Hensley also. Her parents names were Dewey & Grace Mullins. Is there anyone who takes pictures of the graves? If there is anyone who can help me with this, please pass this along. Thanks, Grace M. Wilson

I have spent some time trying to verify some of the verbal history of our family. I have a lot of verbal - which I would be glad to share- but I am concerned since I can find nothing except my father's birth certificate. I have searched the 1920 census, mine records, etc. My grandparents were married in McDowell County (my gradmother(Valerya Bronikia (Lithuanian or Viola Burnet named given in US) always referred to Powhatan Coal Mine, with Welch being the big town. My grandfather(Joseph Moscoe (father Thomas, mother Mary from Eckman) was killed in a mining accident in 1923 and my father (Joseph Moscoe) was born in February, 1924. My grandmother married my grandfathers brother (Matthew Moscoe) they had a daughter(Irene) and then moved to Cincinnati, Ohio and had three more children. My greatgrandmother (Petronella (Rose) Bronicka)ran the boarding house for the miners of the Powhatan Coal Mine and married Paul Zloba before moving to Cincinnati, Ohio. Since I cannot find existing information in shared family trees, I would think my information would fill some gaps. Any help would be appreciated - information or places to search. thank you for your time and again, Barbara J. Moscoe

I'm interested in finding information about the cemetery on the mountain behind City Hall in Kimball. There are many family plots there, most with individual fences. I have relatives buried there in what we knew in the 1930's as the Foti fenced-in area. My dad took care of it for many years before moving to Raleigh Co. We visited there recently and found it is all grown up and we could not locate the Foti cemetery. I understand from the Dick Wilbur family that the area was cleared some years ago. Does anyone know if there is ownership, a register, or anything of the cemetery on record. The cemetery is large, but I would like to assist in some way in clearing it. TOM FOTI

I'm a great-grandaughter of Caleb Smith in McDowell County. I'm doing some family research, and though the Smith side is relatively straight forward, I'm having trouble researching my Grandmother's side. She was buried in 1990(91?) on Garland Mountain with her family. I don't know the name of the cemetary. Her name was Pearlie Mae Addair Smith. Her father was Mont Addair, but his real last name may have been Evans as he was raised by the Addair family but never officially adopted. He died in 1944. Her mother was an Asbury, Julie or Clare, I'm not sure. So, I guess I'm just trying to find out the name of the cemetary on Garland Mountain in McDowell County. I'm also interested in hiring someone to do some research for me. I'd appreciate any information or references you can provide. Sincerely, Ellen Mae Smith

Does anyone have information on Charlie Worthington & his family? He is listed as a boarder of Montgomery Lester on the 1930 census for McDowell Co. Along with him are listed 3 other boarders - Elsie, Freda, & Earnest. I think that these 3 people are my grandfather, his sister Freda & his mother Elsie. My grandfather & his sister were named England @ birth & their mother's maiden name was England. Their father, Dewey England died in 1928. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone out there? This is the only listing for the 3 of them together that I have been able to find. Please help! Thanks! Michelle

I am looking for my Grandfather ROBERT PACK and Grandmothers LOTTIE PACK/HOOKER ancestors. In 1920 I think my grandfather lived in a boarding house in Mercer County, WV. And my Grandmother lived in Buchanan County Virginia. In 1930 They were married and lived in Mcdowell County, WV. Adkins district 1. They had at that time four children James, Junior (Bobby), Sadie (my mother), and Thelma. Living with them was an uncle Shirley Pack. I do not know any of the grandparents names. They had moved to Welch and had lived there for quite a while. I do not know the years. I believed that is where my grandfather died. I had heard that my grandfather worked in the mine in Havaco. And on the day of a big explosion he had told my grandmother he felt funny that day and was going to stay home. I do not know which explosion it was. Robert died in the early 1950s and Lottie died some time in the sixties. I do not have any relatives to ask about this. If you recognize these names, I would love any info you could give me. Thanks so much Donna Kirk

I am working on a Young family and have run into a brick wall. So am going a different direction. My family were in Franklin County, Va. There were 3 boys, Jesse Bailey, Samuel H. & Henry. I find them living in the home of William Starkey in 1850 census. Jesse was my mother-in-laws father and she said her grandfather was James Young. Haven't been able to prove it. I do have a letter from Samuel , written in 1926 after he learned of Jesse's death in 1919. Samuel said he was living in McDowell Co. with his grandson, Fred . He says he stayed most of the time with son Bill. Does this sound familiar to anyone? If so I would be forever be grateful for some help. Thanks so much, Dean Burson

Thanks to all the McDowell County researchers who so kindly answered my query, I have learned much about the history of the county, located members of my great-great grandfather&#x0092s family, and have new leads on some of the other families I am tracing. To summarize the answers to the questions I posed: &#x0093Wind Gap&#x0094 was not positively located, but may possibly be &#x0093Wind Mill Gap&#x0094 located on the McDowell and Mercer Counties line between Ashland and McComas, just east of Cherokee in McDowell County. (Thanks, David Grubb, Kenneth Bowen, and Jeff Young) &#x0093White Camp&#x0094 was located about where the North and South Fork of the Tug Fork come together near present day Black Wolf, the junction of R# 103 and R# 161. From 1863-1872 the McDowell County offices of county clerk and county recorder were in the home of H.T. Perry near Black Wolf. The location of the home is believed to be &#x0093White Camp&#x0094. (Thanks, Alex Schust) &#x0093Tug River&#x0094 was the name of a small settlement "up the holler" from the town of Welch, WV. The present name of this location is Wilcoe, WV in McDowell County on State route 103 southeast of Welch, toward Gary. Wilcoe, and was the location of the McDowell Co. Court House from 1863-1872. Welch is the current county seat. (Thanks, Pat Murphy, Alex Schust and D.W. Dixon.) &#x0093George W. Green&#x0094 was located in the 1870 McDowell Co. Census with his family. Additional information about this family was also discovered, including the marriage of Abigail Green, sister of George W. Green, to Hezekiah &#x0093Kier&#x0094 Bishop. (Thanks, Pat Murphy, Larry E. Smith and &#x009350 Years of McDowell & Wyoming Co., WV&#x0094) Thank you all for your help! Frankie Perry

I wonder if anyone knows the location of what used to be called "Wind Gap" or "White Camp" or "Tug River" in McDowell Co., WV? I have just found out that: "Pursuant to Pension Records it appears that George W. Green died on March 30, 1875 at Wind Gap, West Virginia from a disease of the lungs contracted while in the Union army. Other pensions records put his last P.O. address at White Camp or Tug River in McDowell County, West Virginia." We were wondering about the significance of his being there. He was born near Blaine in Lawrence Co., KY (eastern KY), and his widow returned to the area following his death. Was there perhaps some kind of a sanitarium or hospital there that treated lung disease? If you can help, I would appreciate hearing from you. Frankie Perry

I was wondering if anyone had any information on the formation of the town of Jed in McDowell County. My family owned land that would have been located where the town of Jed sat. It was first owned by Shorten Smith but his daughter and husband, Joanna and Jed Mitchem lived on the land and their daughter, Rebecca inherited the land from her grandfather, Shorten, in 1836. In June 1856, the land was sold by Henderson Elswick and wife, Rebecca (Mitchem) and the land is referred to as the &#x0093Old Jed Mitchum tract&#x0094. I have often wondered if maybe the town was named after my Jed. If anyone knows any of the history of the town, I would love to hear from you. Cheryl

I am trying to find the grave site of my grandmothers first husband and the birth records for his son. My grandmothers name was Mary Olszowik and her first husbands name was (first name unknown) Lelito they would have been married between 1910-1915 in WV their son was Walter Lelito born Aug.17,1912 in WV. I am assuming it's McDowell Co. because she was married to my grandfather (second Marriage) to Joseph Jaskot in McDowell Co, Powhatan,WV on Feb 7,1915. If you can assist me with any help or direct me to where I might find the assistance I need I would appreciate it. Thank you, Raymond Jaskot
