I am still having no luck finding any info on Margaret Louise Baugus Justice of Browns Creek area, possibly Superior. Her parents were John Brady Baugus (born March 24, 1898, Alleghany NC and died May 18, 1964, Elkin, Surry, NC) and Fannie Bowlick (born August 4, 1906, Avery, NC and Died June 17, 1995, Jefferson, Ashe, NC). John and Fannie were married January 2, 1923, in Superior, McDowell, WV. The Bowlick name is spelled Bolick in North Carolina. Is this name Hungarian?

Fannie had several sisters and 1 brother. I have found her name listed in the deceased alumni of Welch High School 1942. I would love to see a picture of her. My father married my mother in 1946 after the war. He never told me about her. He was a great dad and I’m sure Margaret was a lovely person.

If anyone has info or a picture you can contact me at: Sherry Dean.
Any help would be appreciated.

I am looking for any information on the death of my great grandfather, James “Austin” Gray. He and my great grandmother, Eliza Jane Franklin Gray and their children moved to WV sometime between 1905 and 1910. Her parents lived in Big Sandy and I believe Austin and Liza Jane may have also lived in this area for a time and ultimately in Welch. Oral family history says Austin died following a gunshot wound. He was shot and made it home (the wound was not mortal) and collapsed at the front gate. This incident occurred during the winter months and his death was supposedly due to exposure. I have established a timeline based on birth date of the youngest child. The youngest child, Frank Gray, was born on Oct 1, 1915 and is described in the family story as being “a babe in arms” when Austin died. This suggest Austin could have died between Oct 1915 and March 1916. As was common in the time, “Liza Jane”, having eight children between the ages of 15 and a few months of age, and limited means of supporting them, placed the children with friends and neighbors. Liza Jane remarried in 1919 or 1920 to Allen Sanders and lived in Browns Creek. Following her marriage to Sanders, she was able to gather all her children except the youngest, Frank. If anyone has any information regarding Austin Gray’s death or where he is buried , I would appreciate your help.

My name is Barbara McCarty Allen, I lived in a coal camp called McDowell until I was about 11 years old in 1958. Does anyone have any pictures of this coal camp, i.e. school, houses, church, post office or company store? If so, I would be glad to pay for them. I'm trying to reconstruct my life's memories and this part has been very difficult. The McDowell County Historical Society apparently doesn't respond to email inquires, I tried to purchase a book from them with no success.

E-mail Barbara Allen.
Many thanks for any help.

Hi, I am looking for any information on Woodrow Charley Beavers and his family. I am his granddaughter from his marriage to Maria Adelia Rodriquez in 1937. They had three children before a divorce in 1952. According to the divorce papers his family was from English, WVA. I believe he is the son of Thomas Marion and Nancy Collins, but all I have are census records. If there are any records you could provide to verify this family connection I would be very grateful. I also would like to know if there are any living family connections that have pictures or stories they would be willing to share. I would keep any information private, it would just be for my use.

E-mail Coyla Walsh.
Thank you very much for your time.

My name is Juanita Snider Sutphin and I live in Christiansburg, Va. My Great Uncle, Robert Greenfied, deceased, is from War, WVA. I came across a picture of a lady named Miss Anne Greenfield. I don't know who she is or where she is from. I feel that she is related to the Greenfield's somehow.

My Grandmother's name was Mary Lula Greenfield Salyers. Her adopted name was Cook because her mother died in childbirth. Her name was Martisha Cook Greenfield. Martisha was married to William Franklin Greenfield who is from Wake Co. North Carolina.

I have been looking for info on William a very long time. He seemed to disappear after Martisha's death. I do know from my mother, Dorolthy Ellen Salyers Snider, that he had been married before and had 2 daughters that ran away at some point. I think William also had a brother named Bob. If anyone has any info about Miss Anne Greenfeild please let me know. I have a picture of her also and Uncle Robert. Thank you, Juanita Sutphin

Hi, My name is Melanie Licwov Turtletaub. My father Andrew Licwov grew up in Jenkin Jones, which was near Welch, he was born in 1917. We can find no information on the surname Licwov, no immigration records or anything.

His father, also Andrew Licwov (neither had a middle name) was killed in a mining accident where the story goes he was electrocuted, circa 1940 or 1941. Oddly enough, I did find the marriage license and supporting documents online for his marriage to my grandmother, Stella Myers, where it was written that his last name was Licowvo. After the mining accident, my grandmother took her 2 youngest children, still living at home, my father and his little sister Margaret Louise, to Florida.

From the 1930 census I have found that he was born in Italy and spoke Slavic as his native tongue. We have always heard that they owned a vineyard in “the old country” which relatives ended up losing because they did not use the money my great-grandfather sent to pay the taxes. My grandfather also had a brother, maybe named Michael, who went to the “old country” right before WW1 and never returned and was never heard from again.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Most of my Uncle Clarence’s family lives in the Tygart Valley region, so you will find the last name in more recent records. We would also love to find the cemetery where my grandfather is buried.

I was told by the coal miner’s union that the mines regularly made changes to unusual names and that the worker’s then took on those names and thus changed the family surname. We aren’t sure if this was the case or if the name was made more “American” by some immigration official at the time of their arrival in this country.

The year that they entered and the circumstances are not clear. Some say my grandfather was born on the boat on the way over and other stories say it was his brother, but neither scenario can be verified. There is a story that says they sailed from Vienna Austria, but we have no clue which port they came through. If we could find some information from WV, then possibly that would give us a starting point to work backwards from.

Thank you in advance for any information you could provide,
Melanie Turtletaub

Hello My grandfather was from Italy--I think he came here around 1915, not sure. I did find him in the 1930 census for Davy, West Virginia and he was a coalminer... But I have found nothing else, not sure when he even died. His name was Paul T Frederick, we think he was born around 1895 in Italy. He came to the US to work in the coalmines. He married my grandmother Zora P. Mayberry in 1919, and she had 2 sons, one being my father, not much to go on, I don't even know where he is buried at, maybe still in Davy, West Virginia, Browns Creek. Help...I only have one picture of him, would love to know more about him.

Editors' note: We also always welcome updated information. Much of the information on cemeteries was collected in the late 1990's. Additional graves have been added to some cemeteries, and we'd like to update these cemeteries. Photographs are always welcome. This is especially helpful for older headstones that are beginning to fade or wash away.

I am looking for Martha "Mattie" Miles Luke Barber. Mattie died on Nov. 30th, 1918 in the browns creek district kimball Wv.

Will you help me find her grave please?

I am searching for Posey B. Conner. He was born 1877 in Welch, West Virginia. He died July 12, 1916 from injuries in a mine explosion. The only explosion listed prior to his death is the King # 28 near Vivian W.V. on March 28, 1916. In the Bluefield Daily Telegraph on March 29, 1916, it says that 3 were killed and a score injured. Later on March 31, the Charleston Daily Mail reported that 8 victims had died. I would like to find out more on how Posey died and see if there is a list of those injured or killed. ny help would be appreciated, Thank You

I am looking for any information on the family of Sarah Elizabeth Payne b.1865 in VA. She was first married to a J.W. Mobley who then died leaving her with a child, Harry Mobley b. 1893 . She then married John Brown and they resided in McDowell County having more children Ethel (Lizzie)b. 1896 , Titus, Helen, Georgia, and John Brown Jr. If anyone makes a trip to the McDowell courthouse, I would love to find a marriage record for Sarah and John which would be between the years 1892 and 1896. I believe there is an index for those years. Sarah's last name could either be Payne or Mobley. Thanks for any help. Tammy

I am a member of the family in question and have information that could help this person. Her email is no longer valid. I don't know if you could repost it with a reference to my email address or what, but Sarah Elizabeth Payne was my great grandmother. She was married to John Bolen Brown when I knew her. I have the marriage license in digital format too. I have been looking for information about the parents of John Bolen Brown myself.

Seeking any information: My grandmother, Minnie Grace Plemmons Beeman was buried in Caretta in 1929, as was her son Charles, in 1928. Is there only one cemetery in Caretta? Her death certificate only states she was buried in Caretta (doesn’t say Caretta Cemetery). Can you give me directions to or the GPS coordinates for this Caretta Cemetery. I’m not familiar with that area of McDowell but did explore a large cemetery near War at one time. I thought War and Caretta were closer together and that I’d find her marker! Of course, I found nothing but tons of deer droppings. I had fun exploring and visiting War but now realize I was off base and need some assistance to find Caretta Cemetery.
Many thanks,
