KAHLE, KITTS, SUMNER -
In 1924-25 when he was 18-19, my father, William Pulford Sumner, Jr. was Asst. Scoutmaster
of Troop 4 in Bluefield WV. The troop met at the Episcopal Church. He lived at 46 Rogers Street
and was employed at 38 Bland Street. I have a photograph of him looking quite spiffy standing in
a shop with two other men. The shop is furnished with comfortable looking wicker chairs and there
are tables and shelves on which radios are displayed. The room is narrow and deep, with a very
high, almost 2 story, tin ceiling. His family lived in Wytheville VA but Pul, as he was
called, was a great wanderer. When he was 15 he ran off and enlisted in the Army Air Force
spenting a year at Langley Field before they realized he was underage. After he was honorably
discharged he began his wanderings, almost always visiting his mother's relatives along the way,
out to Texas, Colorado, and Mexico. His mother was Mary Kahle, born in Beckley WV. I
suspect he was visiting someone in the Kahle family, or possibly someone in the
Kitts family when he was in Bluefield. I am seeking any information that might shed light
on those years of his life. Who lived at 46 Rogers Street? What was the name of the business at
38 Bland Street and who was the proprietor? There is a family story that he worked with someone
who was experimenting with early television, perhaps in Bluefield? I will be happy to provide a
copy of the photograph to any interested party. All hints and suggestions most gratefully
received.
