FARLEY, HOPKINS,
SIMMONS -
Samuel Hopkins owned and operated an old (grist) mill prior to and after(?) Civil War.
Does any reader know where that old mill would have been and/or have more information about it
and/or Sam Hopkins, as well. (N. part of Mercer or S. part of Summers Counties, WV. is
probable location of mill, but ?) Sam Hopkins was bro. to Reuben, Simeon, Mary (Polly) Hopkins,
son of Jonathan Hopkins and Mary Jemima Simmons Hopkins. Sam married Rachel
Farley in 1857. They had seven children. Sam Hopkins was captured at the Battle of
Winchester, VA in 1864 and taken to POW camp at Fort Delaware. His older brother, Reuben and
several of the Farley brothers were captured and imprisoned at the same time. If you have
any of this info please share with me.

HOPKINS -
I am researching the family of John A. and Sarah HOPKINS, who had 4 children born in
Mercer County in the 1800s. One of the children, Fredrick M. is my great grandfather. Any
information would be helpful, and thanks in advance.

FARLEY, HOPKINS -
I am coming to Mercer/Summers Counties last of this month or first wk of next month for some more
research on Farleys/Hopkins. My sweet wife is allowing me $65-75 money to purchase some
geneology material; books, tapes, or ? My specific search and interest now is the Post Civil War
life of Levi Farley and attempting to find one or more of his present day descendants who
might remember some old family stories passed down through the Farley families. In particular,
finding a family historian who might remember something about my grandfather three generations
removed. I only have A.A. Hopkins old book, out of print, and a few odds and ends
presently.
With all that said, here's my question. Would/Could you recommend something for me
for that small amount of money that I could add to my geneology library? Also, where in
Princeton, Hinton or ? can I purchase said material? Could you recommend a/some book stores,
catalogs, order houses, etc where I could spend my allowance? As you know, many of the good old
books are out of print and collectors charge more than I could pay. Sorry, didn't mean to write a
book;
Is it possible to go from near Elgood, WV to old community of Farley near Pipestem on the
Bluestone Lake by small boat? White Water? Dam? Through "Crump's Bottom?" Is there a place at one
of these places that a person could rent a small boat for a day? Are there boat ramps at each
place where you could put in/ tie up to take pictures and check along the way? The map I am using
is not very clear about that, although it looks like you could. How much of a walk from Farley to
the Lake?
Are there passable gravel or blacktop roads that would take you from Farley to Glen
Lyn?
Reasons I ask? I am going to be in that area end of Sept., first of Oct. and want to
check this out further. I want to check to see if this is a route that could have been used by
Levi Farley and Simeon D. Hopkins to return home from the Civil War by foot.
Are there one or more persons that have a Family Tree that comes down to present day generation
Farleys from Levi Farley, 1828-1888, oldest son of Gideon Farley. If so,
would you please contact me at above email address.
Also I need simple, ez to follow
directions to the Drewery Farley Cemetery and Allen Farley Cemetery. Are they
the same as, "Beech Spring Cemetery?"

I am looking for my greatgreat aunt. I believe she lived in Mercer County. Her name is Minnie
Raines. She never married. She is buried in Ballard Church Cemetery. She died in 1989. I
was just wondering if anyone knows that name and maybe who took care of the funeral arrangements.
Thank you

HOPKINS, REED -
Swinney Hopkins Cemetery ?or G.Wash Reed Cemetery? at/near Elgood, WV was in
terrible shape my last visit a few years ago. Would there be any volunteers who would consider
cleaning it up. From the mid 1970's my uncle, Earl Hopkins and myself would spend hours
cleaning, cutting, spraying and repairing the headstone of Mr. G.Wash Reed, placing white
half-blocks where old creek headstones were, put up a four by eight sign and a memorial to our
loved one, Pvt. Simeon D. Hopkins, there. One year later the sign was shot up, torn down,
Mr. Reed's headstone was broken in several pieces, many half blocks were gone. Counting
our memorial, Mr. Reed's headstone, and one handmade, inscribed stone were all that were
legible. My uncle is now 82, and I moved near Atlanta, so we can't take care of it. If you or
some organization would do that please contact me, Glenn D. Hopkins

Carter, Orace Hampton Aliff, Daisy Ardella Cline and Annie Eliza
Lawson. Ardella married Orace Hampton Aliff. Annie Eliza married John Edward
Carter. All of these lived in Bluefield and their ancestors in and around the area. Thank
you in advance for any help you might give me.

FARLEY, HOPKINS, RYAN -
White G. Ryan's Co. I., Sixtieth Regiment, VA infantry
Where could I find a
roster of this Mercer or Summer Counties Civil War unit that my gggfather, Simeon D.
Hopkins joined on April 15, 1862 at Rappahannock, VA. (Also, older bro. Reuben, Levi
Farley and some other Farley bros.)
Captured, POW at Piedmont, VA in 1864, then
transferred to Union Prison at Camp Morton, In, then released in prisoner exchange from Ft.
Delaware.?
Some of these old units had a group photograph taken before entering combat.
Wonder where or if one of these old photos exist? There is a wealth of info out there if we can
just find out where to search!
