CLASS
OF 1939
(As taken from the 1938 KEYHISCO - The Junior Class)
JUNIOR CLASS
President.....William Loy
Vice-President.....Mary V Gibson
Secretary - Treasurer....Evelyn Snyder
Shakespeare said, "All the world's a stage, and all the men & women merely players."
As we stand on the wings of school life we see play directed by the teacher. The place is Keyser, the time from 1927 to present, the characters are those who compose the present Jr Class of KHS. When the curtains rise we see approximately 100 students eagerly, yet fearfully, starting to school.
As the time elapses, we note the passage of these students from the elementary grades to Jr High. The dialogue becomes especially interesting as we see Bob Stitler and Mary V Gibson presented the American Legion medals because they are the most outstanding students in the class. At this time we see Hartsel McCue awarded a prize for the highest average in history. Also, Whitney Rouzer won the Golden Horseshoe for his study of WV history in 1935 and Harsel McCue won it in 1936.
The attention of the audience turns toward athletes. Earl Tyler and "Drummer" Burns are
on the regular football team in 1936.
In the fall of 1937, we see Fromhart, Kight, Umstot, Burns & Tyler
on the gridiron as part of the regular team.
Even the critics lose their boredom as Kight, Coco, Burns, Huffman,
Fortney, Umstot & Fromhart make outstanding plays on the football
field. Valuable “Stand-ins” for these
actors are Pezzanite, Rotruck and Calemine.
As the lights grow brighter, we see Coco & Tyler on the basketball
floor making top scores and being named on the regional all-tournament teams.
Some of the acting is admirably done by these who represent the scholars of the
time. Among these are: Hartsel McCue, debater; Rachel Springer,
interpreter of poetry; Dorothy Hamill, reader.
Of course there are even those who “stand-in” for the scholars in the
play. Some of these are “Sweetie”
Gibson, Dorothy Hamill and Muriel Fisher.
Time is now the present and the actors assume their present costume and
make-up. The Jrs elected Bill Loy, president
of the class as Harsel McCue had now advanced to the Sr Class, “Sweetie” Gibson
is now vice-president, and Evelyn Snyder, secretary-treasurer.
The curtain lowers for intermission.
But do not fear, for there will be several more acts of the play. They may even be more interesting.
Here’s to the future drama of life.
