MYSTERIOUS DEATH

Miss Sallie Hammer, daughter of Mr and Mrs James Hammer of Great Cacapon, died in the City Hospital in Martinsburg, her death being caused by an attack of peritonitis. She was aged 28 years. Miss Hammer went to the City Hospital April 1, and was then in a critical condition. An operation was deemed imperative, and this was performed. Her condition, however, had been such that the operation proved unavailing and she died a few days after it was performed. The girl at first claimed she had no relatives or friends, but when it was found that she could not recover, she told Dr Oates that her parents resided in Great Cacapon, miles west of Hancock. Letters and telegrams were sent them, and a short time before the girl died she was visited by her brother and sister, who went away afterward. The brother stated that the dead girl had been cast off by her parents, and that he did not expect any interest in the disposal of the remains. As a result, Undertaker Wilen, of Martinsburg, buried the body in Green Hill cemetery at the expense of the county.

Shortly after his incarceration, it grew so serious he became ill, and his condition grew so serious that such action was necessary to save his life.
