D S POWELL
GENERAL MERCHANDISE
It is always a pleasure for us to refer to men who have
risen to a superior commercial position through the medium of their
own energy. Such men are entitled to full praise for the success of
their efforts.
Mr D S Powell's business career is an apt illustration of
the result of assiduous effort, and a thorough knowledge of correct
mercantile principles, the latter being acquired at an early age.
Born in Grant Co, W Va, in 1861, he entered his brother's
store in Williamsport at the age of eighteen, continuing as a clerk
for five years. On attaining his majority, he opened a store in
Maysville, afterward moving to Headsville, and coming to Keyser in 1894.
Here, he built the handsome residence and store building
now occupied on Armstrong St, one of the most attractive in Keyser.
Mr Powell enjoys a large trade, and much of it is with
country patrons, the stock being specially selected for their needs.
A general line of goods is carried, including dry goods, ladies and
men's furnishings, notions, shoes, groceries, and queensware.
he is a firm believer in the two modern guides to
mercantile success, viz: a perfect conformity to the wants of the
public, and a price within the universal limit of those wants.
