WM C CLAYTON
William C Clayton, was born in Hampshire County, Va, on
January 24, 1831. today at 67, he has reached a ripeness of
experienced and maturity of judgement which render his usefulness to
the community of greater value than at any previous period.
Admitted to the bar in 1859, he has always practiced in
this section, and has for many years held a prominent, if not
foremost, place i his profession. He is known both as a civil and
criminal lawyer, and has been in charge of or assisted with most of
the noteworthy trials in this judicial district for the past twenty years.
Mr Clayton's childhood was spent at a time and in a portion
of the country when even a district school education was
unobtainable, and to his father, T Clayton, M D, he owes the
rudiments of knowledge which fitted him to enter a classical school
at Romney. He afterward, in 1847-8, attended the University of
Virginia at Charlottesville. In 1875-7, as a member of the Judiciary
Committee of the State Senate, Mr Clayton rendered congenial service
to his constituents, and has not since been a candidate for office.
He resides in his handsome residence in Keyser and devotes
his time to his large practice.
