I'm seeking information on the NELSON and SANSOM family of Wayne, Mingo, and Logan Counties, West Virginia. The earliest relatives I've been able to trace are WALTER NELSON, born in 1876, and his wife JOSE (Josee/Josie?) SANSOM, born in Mingo County, West Virginia, probably in the 1870s. It's possible that Walter and Josie were married in Lawrence County, Kentucky (or perhap a surrounding county). Walter's mother's first name was RUTH (maiden name unknown) and she was born in 1853. Walter and Josie had at least three children: 1) OKEY NELSON, born in 1898. He married CORA WHITE (b. 1900) in April 1914, Logan County, WV. Cora's father's name was BENJAMIN WHITE and her mother's name was E. J. (maiden name: WHITE?). They had three known children: HOWARD NELSON (b. 1915); DELMAR NELSON (b. about 1916); and BABY NELSON (female, b. 1918). 2) BERTHA NELSON, born in 1901, in Wayne County, West Virginia. Bertha married SILVIO BRUNO CONTE, SR. (also known as "Sam Count," an americanization), on July 6, 1919, in Chauncey (Logan County), West Virginia. Bertha and Sam had four children in the cities of Richwood (Nicholas County), Mallory (Logan County), and Huntington (Cabell County), West Virginia: LUCILLE AMELIA CONTE (b. 1920), JOSEPH CONTE (b.1923), HAROLD "Red" CONTE (b. 1921), and FRANCIS CONTE (b. 1925). Bertha died in 1925 or 1926 in either West Virginia (or possibly Pennsylvania). 3) THOMAS NELSON, born 1909, possibly in Wayne County, WV. No other information. Additional possible pertinent information: Sam's second wife was DULCIE ELIZABETH WALKUP, born March 25, 1907, in Renick (Greenbriar County), West Virginia. Sam's parents were: CAMILLO CONTE, born about 1870, in Ponza, Italy(?) and FRANCESCA SCOTTI (americanized name: Francis Scott), also born in the 1870s, probably in Italy. Dulcie's parents were: OTIS R. WALKUP, born 1874 in Greenbriar County, WV, and UNA RUCKER, born 1884 in Greenbriar County, WV. Her grandparents were: JOSEPH A. WALKUP, born 1847 in Greenbriar County, WV, and MARTHA MELVESTA CORRELL, born 1848 in Greenbriar County, WV. Sam and Dulcie had eight children in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Sam died in 1975, in Detroit Michigan; Dulcie died in 1898, in Warren, Michigan. Gertrude RICHARDSON (1903-?) married Frank SCHWARTZ and removed from Va. and settled in Williamson, Mingo Co., W. Va. They had eight children, six boys and two girls. Hoping someone can help me with info on MILLARD BRUMFIELD b. abt.1908. I have copy of a birth certificate filed 11/21/1934 Mingo County, City of Naugatuck for birth of HARRY EUGENE BRUMFIELD b.11/25/1933(certificate filed almost a year past birth?). Millard's occupation is listed as Laborer, residence Naugatuck, age 26, but no info on parents. Mother is listed as BLANCHE FLETCHER, age 21 (abt. 1913), occupation Housewife, residence Naugatuck. It is signed only by mother with Blanche Brumfield as signature. In line 20 - "How many children born to this mother up to and including this child?" is a scribble and appears to be a 2 changed to 3. HARRY ended up in foster care at about age 1 - any info on these parents or siblings greatly appreciated. I have checked Mingo County records on net and found PEARIS BRUMFIELD son of JOHN & RACHEL BRUMFIELD married to Ann TONEY 5/3/1858. Also EMAR.Brumfield, daughter of John & Rachel, married James DRAKE 4/23/1857. I also have a SS record on MILLARD b.5/10/1907 d.12/30/1980 in Huntington, Wayne County, son of Henry Clay Brumfield. On this Millard, record indicates "1st marriage unknown", 2nd marriage to MELITA ALICE SNAIR@ Cattlesburg, KY. My hunch is that Blanche was 1st wife (or maybe they never married). Harry was told his mother & father both died of TB & that's why he ended up in foster care. At age 16 he found out his mother was alive & living in Cincinnati, Oh & remarried to CARL BRYANT (also from Williamson,WVA.) Harry immediately went to Cincinnati & spent 1 year with his mom before she died. Hoping someone can help with this. |

Hi, I am researching the Barger ancestry. My dad was Chester Arthur Barger, born 07-19-25, Sharples, West Virginia. His dad and mom were Samuel William Barger, birth around 1876 and death around 1943. He married Flossy Mae Crouch, born around 1896 and died around 1945. Samuel and Flossy (not sure if Flossy is correct name) are buried in Delbarton, West Virigina (I don't have the cemetary name or any other info). The Bargers had 3 children - Sallie, Chester and Lester. I believe Salli; married name Altizer - is a half sister and not sure if she had the same mother or father as Chester and Lester. Looking for Robert Belcher b. June of 1860 in Tazewell Va. He married Nancy (Allen) Blankenship, b. abt. 1850. They were married on 3/11/1886 in Wyoming Co. WV. Nancy's parents were Jesse and Hannah Allen Blankenship. The Mingo Co. census has them in 1910 in the Wharncliffe district and they were listed as Nancy Belcher, Head, age 52, and Robert Belcher as a boarder, age 50, and Vida Belcher (their dau.) age 16, as a boarder. I am trying to find information on the Clay family from Mingo county. My great grandmother Grace Clay was born in Red Jacket 6-26-1914. Her father was Joseph C. Clay or J.C. and her mother's name I believe was Penelope or Minnie. Joseph was a straw boss for the mines who was attacked beside the railroad tracks and had some of his fingers cut off by nonunionists on his way to a union meeting. B.F.Johnson and wife Emaline were in Mingo Co. census in 1900. Both died before 1910 and were buried in Boyd Co. Ky. Some of their children were still living in Mingo Co., Ella Warnick,wife of John W. Warnick; Minnie White, wife of Guy White and Charles R. Johnson. Would love to hear from any of these families. |

Looking desparately for any infomation on any descendants of siblings...SCOTT ALLEN, MARY ELIZABETH ALLEN THOMPSON or BELLE ALLEN THOMPSON. All born just after the Civil War. Mary Elizabeth Allen is my great-grandmother. I would like to get in touch with any decends of any of these three for exchange of information, especially on their mother, Christina Gunnoe Allen of Wyoming Co but living most of her adult life in the Logan CH area of Logan county with her children. I would like to know more about Scott, Mary, and Belles father. Supposed to be a J Brett Allen. (Christina was 1st married to Nehemiah Allen of Oceana, but he died during the Civil War. We don't think he is the father of any of the children, altho possibly could be Scott's father. If you are a decendant or know of any decendants of these people please let them know about this request. I have photo's of Mary Elizabeth,(with husband James "Jimmy" Thompson and baby Henry) and Belle I also have a photo of Christina Gunnoe Allen. |
